Autumn 🍂 well and truly underway, has been chilly this week !

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

Just got DSs car insurance renewal, almost £1500! Being up in Notts has added about £400 if the alternative quotes are anything to go by. 😫 Really don't know what to do, it's so expensive but he will be gutted to lose the car. Life just seems like an endless empty of our bank account at the moment.

crazycrofter · 31/10/2023 10:29

@JustHereWithMyPumpkin the insurance on dd's car was more than that and that was in my name with her as named driver (she doesn't take it to Nottm)! The car was bought jointly with ds, hence why she only uses it in holidays, but it's interesting to know that insurance would probably be even higher if she had it with her at uni and had her own insurance. She talked about buying ds out and taking it to uni next year, but I don't think she really needs it, everything is in bus/tram/walking distance. Ds is taking his test in December, so I'm dreading the cost of insurance if he passes! Although he is very independent and has insisted that he will at least part pay for insurance (he earns about £700 a month!).

Thanks @heifer I saw that too. Dd has come to the conclusion that she will just stick with her warehouse job in reading week/Christmas/Easter/Summer, plus whatever she can earn with Festivall Staff (she's doing the light festival in December at Wollaton Park). She seems to be doing ok on her money now, spending less than last year!

Oh, just heard FIL died. He had been in hospital (leukaemia since 2019) with a cough and struggling to breathe but released about two weeks ago (I think on his insistence) and died last night. Horrible.

@Heifer A "crit" (critique) is a big thing in art & design, where your tutor gives you verbal feedback on your work... sometimes in front of the whole class! 😱

Thanks @PhotoDad In that case double luck to your DD. @Cantonet

@Piggywaspushed really sorry to read that, hope your DH is ok.
I read your DS's article - it's flipping brilliant, I can see why you're so proud of it. Loved the comment they put in quotes, well done to him. Hope he gets to do a lot more.

Comefromaway · 31/10/2023 11:28

Sorry to hear that Piggy

ealingwestmum · 31/10/2023 11:33

Very sad news Piggy. Hope your DH is ok.

PhotoDad · 31/10/2023 11:34

Oh, I'm sorry to hear that, @Piggywaspushed.

Sorry to hear your news @Piggywaspushed Flowers

JustHereWithMyPumpkin · 31/10/2023 11:43

@crazycrofter last year it was around £800, this is part of the massive hike in insurance costs across the board, it's obscene. This price is with him as the registered keeper and main driver and DH as a named driver (makes it cheaper for some reason). At least your DS as offered to pay some of the cost, mine would never! 🙄

@Piggywaspushed I'm so sorry to hear about your FIL. Flowers

Piggywaspushed · 31/10/2023 11:52

Thanks all : FIL isn't actually DH's dad (who died maybe 12 years ago). But we are all upset as he was a good bloke and a proper grandad to the boys.

Seeline · 31/10/2023 11:53

Sorry to hear your news @Piggywaspushed Flowers

Piggywaspushed · 31/10/2023 11:53

My car insurance went up loads this year. Never had a claim. Experienced driver. Low insurance group. DH's OTOH went down! He has speeding points and drives an Insignia!

JustHereWithMyPumpkin · 31/10/2023 13:57

Mine did too @Piggywaspushed in fact all our insurances car/house/pet all went up hugh amounts without having made claims. How did your DH's go down??

BlueMarigold · 31/10/2023 14:37

Sending love @Piggywaspushed xx

icanbewhatiwant · 31/10/2023 15:09

@JustHereWithMyPumpkin we got the lowest quote from admiral. Still more in Brighton than here.

@Piggywaspushed sorry to hear your news.

No idea! Slight change to policy but nothing major. His is now way cheaper than mine.

Monkey2001 · 31/10/2023 16:52

Sorry that you have lost a loved FIL/grandad. Hope you cab focus on treasuring memories. 💐

ealingwestmum · 31/10/2023 18:27

I place learning to drive to first few years of affording to drive in the long list of atrocities YP (and their parents) have had to face. Alongside exam/CAG fiasco, uni life during covid, patchy online schooling for many, and now with strikes/no marking, poor mental health provision; I could go on. Driving is such a key life skill and yet so financially punitive.

There, rant over!

Cantonet · 31/10/2023 18:46

@Piggywaspushed I'm sorry to hear of your family's loss 💐
@Crazycrofter thank you for the Testi tip. I'm assuming since his test is in February & we are looking for around January, they won't appear until the last minute?
I'm already worried about the future car insurance now 😟 I also have to see whether I can sort out cheaper house insurance, before the auto renewal in a few days.

EwwSprouts · 31/10/2023 19:12

@Piggywaspushed So sorry to hear of your loss. I'm sure being in his own bed meant a lot to your FIL. Having a fab grandparent is a blessing.

Oblomov23 · 31/10/2023 19:26

Sorry to hear that Piggy Flowers.

He wasn't, sadly. He wasn't able to breathe so was on the sofa. I'm not sure it was restful or peaceful. He was only 72.

EwwSprouts · 31/10/2023 19:40

@Piggywaspushed I'm sorry that would be distressing.

crazycrofter · 31/10/2023 20:42

@Cantonet you'll find that lots of Jan dates come up now, as well as Nov last minute ones. At least that's been the case for us. We originally moved a Feb date at a random centre an hour away to a mid-Jan date at a local centre within a couple of weeks of booking, and then we managed to move the date again to 28th Dec. I think we're sticking with that now!
