Thread 49 - Covid GCSE Cohort - The nights are drawing in...

Autumn 🍂 well and truly underway, has been chilly this week !

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

Sorry there is so much illness around, hoping for a speedy recovery for everyone.

@Oblomov23 I’m so sorry it’s come to this with your job, what an awful way to leave. I haven’t got any advice and it’s probably not what you need at the moment, but sending virtual hugs to you and virtual blunt instruments over the head to him.

All quiet here, I’m not keen on this time of year, nothing to do, nowhere to go (we had a packed December). Everyone starting to get in each other’s way. DS is mainly hiding upstairs, he handed in an assignment last week and is working on another one in between watching the darts. I think he has needed this downtime even if I don’t enjoy it much. Before we hit the exam years we often used to go away for NY and it was lovely, but we haven’t done it since covid, someone always has mocks or assignments looming and neither of mine ever want to go away at such times.

JustHereWithMyPumpkin · 30/12/2023 11:00

@Oblomov23 I’m sorry to hear about work but hoping that you find a new position soon that’s as far removed from that environment as can be. X

Also sorry to hear about so many poorly people, get well soon everyone.

DS2 is still needing to be geed up to revise, he has no motivation at all. I’m tempted to go the bribe route but it goes against everything in me. I’m also wary that he is easily stressed out so it’s like walking a tight rope trying to ‘encourage’ more effort.

icanbewhatiwant · 30/12/2023 13:42

Sorry to hear of the job loss and poorly people.

Ds2 has messaged a few times, he's struggling to get on with his essays. He's still convinced he has adhd. I've said I'll pay for him to see someone for a diagnosis. But he's turned me down. I think the more he's convinced he has adhd the worse he's getting. He's been spending the day in the uni library. He's turning his phone off to stop distractions, but has broken pens, bitten all his nails off and fiddles with anything he can. He only got 100 words done yesterday. He has 3 more essays of 1000 words due in next week. He did say he has no interest in the subjects he's having to write about in the 2 essays he's doing, the current essay is about race and religion in 19th century Asia. He is finding it very boring. That must make it difficult to write. Hopefully he will get it finished. He says 400 words a day is the most he can do. That doesn't sound much. But I've not been to uni so I don't know. Once he has finished the essays he will come home for a couple of weeks.

Greetings everyone from the House of Lurgy. 2x norovirus, 2 x covid, 2x streaming cold and one perky and annoyingly healthy DD1…
DDs brand new boyfriend was coming to lunch so we could meet him for the first time, but now he is just coming to take her back to London and we can only smile and wave from afar so as not to infect him boo hooo

Cantonet · 30/12/2023 15:02

@Oblomov23 that manager sounds like a major creep. How dare he keep on pawing you during the handover. Hopefully next year can only get better for you so Happy New Year 🎊 for 2024!
Sorry for all the illness's around.
Certainly the latest COVID strain appears to be pretty nasty.
@PhotoDad I hope you can get help with your dad soon.
Dd2 has just gone back to London on the train. She's missing her boyfriend & wants a proper New Years eve. Our new spaniel has been sleeping with her as she's been pretty nocturnal & doing her architectural drawings until 4 in the morning. She started off in her basket but has now gravitated to dd's bed. The doggies going to cry tonight without her. She just loves to be cuddled all the time, if she's not out for a walk. She doesn't jump on the boys beds for some reason. Maybe she doesn't like the smell ! I think in her first home she was obviously used to sleeping on a child's bed.

Comefromaway · 30/12/2023 15:13

That makes me so cross to hear that. I hope something much better is round the corner. Dh is a different person since leaving a very toxic job with toxic Managment. I can’t say much more as others may be taking legal action.

sorry to hear of all the illness. And I totally understand the difficulties with potential adhd.

photodad I hope that your dad gets the prope care he needs soon.

EwwSprouts · 30/12/2023 15:34

@Oblomov23 Well they were a crap organisation. Fingers crossed for a new role where you will work with people of integrity.

Sympathy to all those suffering various lurgies. Two sets of friends have cancelled on us this week as at least one of them is in bed unwell.

DS is currently doing an assignment. Two due first week back. Seems his local friends also have their heads down. They are having a big night out NYE.

crazycrofter · 30/12/2023 20:50

Sorry to hear about your job and horrible manager @Oblomov23 - I hope something comes up for you soon.

Weve also had illness. I suspect covid but don’t have any tests; I haven’t been this unwell since my first bout of covid in 2020.

@Delphigirl we managed to meet DD’s new bf last week before illness hit. He seems very sweet! She’s off to see him tomorrow, now she’s over the worst of her illness.

PhotoDad · 30/12/2023 21:40

@Oblomov23 That's horrible. Sorry to read about it.

Delphigirl · 31/12/2023 10:43

@oblomov just caught up on your work travails… what a horrible person. I’m so sorry.

@crazycrofter - glad your DD’s boyfriend seems nice, as did my DD’s. He had a coffee standing six feet away which is just as well as I have just tested positive for Covid. Feel like shit

AnneOfCleavage · 31/12/2023 11:50

Oh no @Delphigirl I hope it's short lived 🤞Feel better soon.

So many of us on here have had it this month. I had really stiff achy legs last week but test was negative however my bro in law got a positive a day later and I'd seen him a few days before the aches so maybe it was but v mild.

Lovely to read of nice new boyfriends 😀

You sound well rid of your creepy manager @Oblomov23 but still I'm so sorry you've had a shit time of it at your old work. 2024 is a brand new start and in a few hours you can wash yourself free of 2023.

Hoping for a driving test cancellation before DD goes back to uni - she's had a couple of lessons but isn't insured on my car now so if she doesn't it'll be Summer before she'll get a chance and I'm twitchy as her theory runs out not long after.
She's started her essay that needs handing in before term starts but isn't in the right frame of mind for work - is anyone though!!!

crazycrofter · 31/12/2023 12:27

Sorry about the covid @Delphigirl . Pretty sure he’s what I have and I can’t shift it, thought I was feeling better yesterday but then developed a cough and sore throat, and a really blocked nose so couldn’t sleep. It’s been nearly a week now.

Ds failed his driving test last week @AnneOfCleavage . He’s insured on the car he bought with dd until 14/1 and then she’s taking it back to uni as she’s buying him out. So far he has a cancellation on 23rd via the Genie app, but I’m still hoping for one next week. We can get him insured on our car but it’s quite different to drive. He’s saving up for his own car and hopes he’ll have enough by Feb.

Oblomov23 · 31/12/2023 15:15

Thanks All.
Sorry to hear of so much illness and covid. And driving failures.

Anyone got any good news? Wink

EerilyDecorated · 31/12/2023 15:22

I'm trying to think of some @Oblomov23 . As on here, I seem to have a lot of friends and family going through difficult times with illnesses (cancer, diabetes, seizures, arthritis) plus a couple with marital problems which is all worrying.

Oh yes, one small bit of good news, I won a photographic competition in a local paper, which was a lovely surprise.

craggyrat · 31/12/2023 15:49

Well done on the competition @EerilyDecorated

No news here. Going out for pizza with DS tonight and then quiet night in. He goes back to C next Saturday. Been lovely having him home.

Happy New Year Celebration GIF by Lucas and Friends by RV AppStudios

Congrats on the photography win @EerilyDecorated ⭐️

We’re staying in tonight (except DS1 who has gone up to Notts for the night and taken a couple of home friends with him). I’m planning on being in bed by 10.30 and snoring loudly at midnight, I just can’t be bothered with NYE but hope that those of you having fun to tonight enjoy it immensely! Happy new year to you all!

EerilyDecorated · 31/12/2023 22:54

Thank you Smile. I’m in on my own, DS has gone to a friend’s house (first time he’s gone out on NYE as his friends all live miles away, he’s staying over). DD and DH have gone to the cinema but will be back soon. I’m watching Queen at Wembley.

PhotoDad · 31/12/2023 23:05

Congratulations, @EerilyDecorated, why not show us the winning pic??

Happy New Year, everyone! We have celebrated an hour early, after a family evening watching a few eps of the Colin Firth "Pride and Prejudice." Perfect.

EerilyDecorated · 31/12/2023 23:38

I’m thinking about that @PhotoDad , I do have a rule never to share the same photos on MN and FB for privacy reasons though and as I talk about the DCs a lot on this thread, hmmm.

EerilyDecorated · 31/12/2023 23:45

Also its a local landmark, not wildlife or similar.

Oblomov23 · 31/12/2023 23:57

Well done ED. Show us anyway. We love any success.

craggyrat · 01/01/2024 07:29

Happy New Year everyone! We made it to 1030....lightweights! Love that version of Pride and Prejudice @PhotoDad . We were watching old episodes of Comic Strip Presents - DS loved Five go mad in Dorset if anyone else is old enough to remember that from 1982!

Zebracat · 01/01/2024 09:27

Happy New year everyone. I have good news, after 3 weeks of being really unwell with covid and it’s aftermath, I’ve woken up snotty rather than blocked up. I am so so pleased. Got family coming for lunch and the house is rancid, so why I’m sitting here , not even dressed, I really dont know. But Ive written a list.

EwwSprouts · 01/01/2024 10:04

Happy new year to one and all! We had friends round so made it past midnight. We were slumped on sofas watching Rick Astley by that point though.

@EerilyDecorated Congratulations on the photo comp.

EwwSprouts · 01/01/2024 10:06

@Zebracat Glad to hear you are on the mend.
