Thread 49 - Covid GCSE Cohort - The nights are drawing in...

Autumn 🍂 well and truly underway, has been chilly this week !

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

Fingers crossed Delphi 🚗 🤞

Alsoplayspiccolo · 20/11/2023 10:16

Hope she passed with flying colours, Delphigirl!

Delphigirl · 20/11/2023 10:33

Oh dear. 2nd time unlucky 😢

crazycrofter · 20/11/2023 10:47

Oh dear @Delphigirl that's a shame 😥

craggyrat · 20/11/2023 10:56

Ah that's a shame @Delphigirl

Delphigirl · 20/11/2023 11:06

It’s those darned roundabouts

Seeline · 20/11/2023 11:18

Sorry to hear that @Delphigirl

Alsoplayspiccolo · 20/11/2023 11:46

Ah, that's disappointing for her.
Monday morning tests can't be much fun, I'm sure.

Shimy · 20/11/2023 12:40

Oh no @Delphigirl how dissapointing. She's just got to keep going, she'll get there in the end.

ealingwestmum · 20/11/2023 12:54

Argh, sorry to hear this Delphi. Dusting herself off is easier said than done with the horrendous wait for next one hurdles :(

JustHereWithMyPumpkin · 20/11/2023 13:45

Ah I'm sorry @Delphigirl , she'll get there, third time's the charm.

Delphigirl · 20/11/2023 14:55

Ahh thanks everyone. She is sad but we will hire ourselves to try and get another cancellation. Frankly if she can do roundabouts safely in a test she shouldn’t have a licence - I think we will be doing some more practice on the 50000 which exist within a 10 mile radius of our house!!

Monkey2001 · 20/11/2023 15:03

@Delphigirl sorry to hear that. May be worth checking out which test centres near you have fewer/easier roundabouts - it varies massively! But as you say, the important thing is that she is safe behind the wheel.

Oblomov23 · 20/11/2023 15:21

Sorry to hear that Delphi. Hope dd can get another test soon.

EwwSprouts · 20/11/2023 16:56

Ah sorry to hear that @Delphigirl . A couple of DS's friends failed on the first roundabout out of the test centre, which is about only about 50yards into the test. They examiners are so keen on it. She will get there!

PhotoDad · 20/11/2023 19:00

Sorry to hear, Delphi!

icanbewhatiwant · 20/11/2023 19:10

@Delphigirl sorry to read about the test. Hopefully next time 🤞

DH has covid. He's not had it before. He didn't catch it when I had it May last year. He thought it was covid, I didn't see the point in testing, but I had one old test left, he's been desperate to get a positive test 🤣 ds's 2 and 3 haven't had covid that we've known about either. Ds1 tested positive early last year, he didn't have symptoms but others in his house had it, so he tested. I have always thought dh, ds2 and ds3 must've had it too, just no symptoms. Dh had his vaccine 5 or 6 weeks ago so hopefully that will help him. I've moved out into ds1's bedroom. I don't really want to catch it, but it doesn't matter that much if I do. Dh always gets a chest infection if he has a cold, then needs a month or so of antibiotics and then steroids. Thankfully he rarely gets colds. So I'm sure he will be the same this time.

Sorry to hear that @Delphigirl

Also sorry about your DH and Covid @icanbewhatiwant. I hope he is not too bad with it.

Monkey2001 · 20/11/2023 21:58

Hope the Covid passes lightly Icanbe. Any news on the prostate trouble?

EwwSprouts · 20/11/2023 22:27

@icanbewhatiwant Hope your DH gets over his bout of Covid without a chest infection.

DontCallMeBaby · 20/11/2023 23:09

Sorry to hear about the test @Delphigirl … DD failed 2/3 tests on roundabouts (the other was speed). When she finally passed the first roundabout she came to she had to go all the way round - and someone else went the wrong way round in front of her! I think she was genuinely ready to pass then, coping with that.

icanbewhatiwant · 21/11/2023 06:34

@Monkey2001 thanks for asking, dh is on hormone therapy to stop testosterone production and they are adding another drug soon, just awaiting appointment. No side effects so far really. I think he has always had far too much testosterone, the drugs definitely haven't reduced it completely. I expect they will blood test to see how low it is now. The treatment will work for anything from 5 months to 10 years, with the average being 3 years according to google. So we just have to wait and see. I think once they stop working then chemo comes next. It's a case of living with it rather than a cure. Dh thinks he's not on the drugs forever, but I'm fairly sure he is, I just hope he doesn't decide to stop them.

Cantonet · 22/11/2023 10:04

@Delphigirl good luck for your dd's next time 🤞
Ds has his next week so I've been trying to suss out car insurance if he passes.
Admiral multi car insurance came up with @£800 odd for our little Kia with him added as a new driver which seems a really good deal ( plus dh, me & dd1 as named drivers too) I was really scared it would be well over £1000. Now all he has to do is pass!
I'm also in two minds whether I want him to drive after the 💔 tragedy of the much loved 4 boys in Wales who come from very nearby to us. It just seems so close to home & so very sad for their parents, with their whole lives left to live.

Monkey2001 · 22/11/2023 12:52

@Cantonet do you know that quotes are usually MUCH lower if they start in over a week. Try playing with the start date to see what impact it has for you.

Yes, I thought the same about that tragedy in Wales. Just awful.

Cantonet · 22/11/2023 13:32

Oh really @ Monkey?
That's so useful to know!
This was a quote for next Wednesday so this might have been why it was so reasonable. Totally unknowingly on my part! So when is the best day/date to start from? Love MN....
