Thread 48- Covid GCSE Cohort - Summer before Year 2 Uni

Oblomov23 · 25/08/2023 20:39

Summer ending. Year 2 for many at Uni about to start.

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

Had good news today - no lymph node spread following surgery results so no more surgery or chemo needed. Radiotherapy September or October and then yearly checks. Big relief all round !

crazycrofter · 06/09/2023 19:10

That’s great news @craggyrat !

ProggyMat · 06/09/2023 19:11

So pleased to hear that, @craggyrat!

Alsoplayspiccolo · 06/09/2023 19:18

That is the BEST news, craggyrat!
Hope you’re recovering well after the op and can allow yourself a celebratory glass of your favourite tipple to celebrate.
Well done for being so stoic about it all - you’ve been so calm and level headed.

craggyrat · 06/09/2023 19:36

Thanks everyone. Was a bit stressed this morning but much better now. We've had celebratory early meal out and health kick starts tomorrow!

ealingwestmum · 06/09/2023 19:36

Really pleased for you Craggyrat, you have handled it all so calmly, I hope the treatment is not too ghastly.

Oblomov, if things get really desperate and he definitely needs to vacate his bulk, a box back is not as expensive as one thinks. Especially when we forget to tot up cost of fuel, eating in services, let alone your your back challenges. I vote train too.

stoneysongs · 06/09/2023 19:56

Great news @craggyrat, really pleased for you 🎉

Fiddlersgreen · 06/09/2023 21:02

Fantastic news @craggyrat I’m very pleased for you

Cantonet · 06/09/2023 21:20

How lovely to hear that @craggyrat 💐

cariadambyth · 06/09/2023 21:29

Wonderful news @craggyrat . Thank you for sharing it with us.

icanbewhatiwant · 06/09/2023 21:41

@craggyrat great to hear your good news.

@285NeuerNamen that's our problem, the opposite to you. No dual carriageway at all round here. There are.a few places where the road widens to dual, but not much practice for getting on a slip road. It's the lorries that make me nervous though.

285NeuerNamen · 06/09/2023 22:05

Fantastic news @craggyrat, that’s great to hear.

Seeline · 06/09/2023 22:17

Great news @craggyrat !

I love driving, but it is tiring. I do London -bristol and back in a day for DS which is ok with lunch in the middle. I struggle to do London -norwich and back even though it's almost the same distance. Strangely I think it is the lack of motorways which make it seem a much longer trip. Luckily I don't mind staying over in Norwich 😁

NCTDN · 06/09/2023 22:21

Fab news craggy x

sazzy5 · 06/09/2023 22:41

Fantastic news @craggyrat.
@Seeline I’ve done Exeter and back in a day and I was exhausted. DS is taking the car this year, he’s already done a few trips, so no need for the long journey this year.
DS2 is looking at Bath this weekend so DH is taking him, it will feel very strange next year if he goes to Uni as well.

EwwSprouts · 06/09/2023 22:46

@craggyrat So pleased to read your update.

I like driving but regular use of the M25 would diminish that I suspect.

Delphigirl · 06/09/2023 23:02

So delighted to hear that @craggyrat !!

DontCallMeBaby · 06/09/2023 23:10

Fab news @craggyrat 🙂

Others have provided a handy reminder that maybe we don’t want to do Preston and back in a day … we actually did it for moving in last year and it was hard going. Actually I remember last year I wanted to do it that way as I hated the thought of being in a hotel with DD half a mile away by herself. Stupid soppy past me 😂 Anyway, hotel booked now. The journey is highly variable as it involves the utterly benighted M5/6 junction so probably as well.

Takeittotheboss · 06/09/2023 23:24

Great news @craggyrat

OrangeCinnamonLatte · 07/09/2023 01:04

@craggyrat So pleased to read your update.

I like driving but regular use of the M25 would diminish that I suspect.

We are only about 10 minutes from the M25 (southern section) so virtually every journey I do starts and ends with it 😭 It's definitely a different style of motorway driving and I can understand that some who don't get to experience it very often would rather not encounter it at all!

Seeline · 07/09/2023 09:04

DSA

Longshot but has anyone been given Glean software ? It can record lectures etc whilst allowing simultaneous notes to be made etc.
DD cannot get the DSA supplied microphone to work with her iPad which is the device she wants to use this package on. It will only recognise the mic as headphones when plugged in. Her iPad has a usb c connection and the mic has a jack, so using the DSA supplied converter but no luck. DSA also supposed to have supplied a usb sound card adapter (?), but that hasn't arrived - no idea if that is the issue!!

The mic works with her laptop so knows it does actually work. I don't have any Apple products so not really much help.

Heifer · 07/09/2023 09:37

@craggyrat that is such a great update, so pleased for you. I've been so impressed by your posts. Hope the rest of the journey is as smooth as it can be.

Loving the updates re 2nd years (and first years for some and work for others).

DD has just this morning flown to Croatia with her bf for a week, then she will head back to Nottingham sometime after (she hasn't decided when yet).
She hasn't even seen her new house, but the photos look ok (matching furniture) ;-)
Fingers crossed for the late 1st sits and resists. That is so late to find out!

It's funny reading all the questions on WIWIKAU on facebook, that was us this time last year!
