Thread 46 - GCSE Covid Cohort , Searching for Summer Solstice

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Be warned there might be lots of 'Uni Freshers' chat this time of year. My experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

Thank you kindly @OrangeCinnamonLatte
As always you are a star. ⭐️

Zebracat · 26/04/2023 19:05

You are indeed a star. Thanks for the new thread.

EwwSprouts · 26/04/2023 21:12

Thanks @OrangeCinnamonLatte

@delphigirl Hope your DH is recovering well? What a reunion you will have!

Delphigirl · 26/04/2023 23:29

Thanks for thread @OrangeCinnamonLatte , I love this group! Thanks @ewwsprouts he is doing v well. I am being an outwardly excellent nurse (inwardly is a different story however… nurses are saints. I just don’t have the patience for it)

Delphigirl · 26/04/2023 23:37

@OrangeCinnamonLatte just read your reply about the boyfriend. Hmmm yes does not sound like someone you would have chosen for her, exactly. Relationships can be so intense at that age and I think you are quite right to say very little as anything which might be perceived as criticism will probably intensify it further…

ealingwestmum · 27/04/2023 00:38

Thank you for new thread Orange. Sorry everyone for lack of posting, it's been a little manic on the personal front, mainly dealing with the older folk in my life.

Delphigirl, good to hear your DH is now on the mend track. It's going to be a reunion on an epic scale I hope!

Sorry to hear of those with challenging DC and how weary it all can get.

I have DD finishing Y1 and coming home on the 9th May - I cannot believe how fast it has gone!

PhotoDad · 27/04/2023 06:10

Thank you for the new thread!

MargaretThursday · 27/04/2023 06:46

Thank you!

ExtremelyDetermined · 27/04/2023 06:50

Thank you for the new thread @OrangeCinnamonLatte . I'm sorry things are turning out this way for DD, I think you are doing the right thing not interfering but it must be so hard.

@Delphigirl well done on the nursing, hopefully DH makes a rapid recovery.

@Zebracat sorry things are so hard with your YP at the moment too, I don't have any experience of that type of degree or work.

DS is coming home for the weekend tomorroe, he's planning to come on the train (which is do-able on weekdays as there are buses but it means two buses and two trains). He's never done a complicated journey like that on public transport hy himself before so this is great, although I had been looking forward to a little trip to Ciren (I usually go up early and have a potter round the shops and a coffee, I have become fond of the place but never mind, I will take him back on Monday). I get a free day at home instead which is useful as we have a building project starting in a couple of weeks and I need to declutter. I imagine his will be his last trip home before the end of term, time has flown.

NCTDN · 27/04/2023 07:24

It's hard to think that it's not yet May but for most of them their first year is almost over.

estherfrewen · 27/04/2023 07:34

Thanks for new thread. Not been on for a while. Had user name issues and now seem to have reverted from craggyrat to Esther frewen again. Am v confused.

DS doing first year exams this week then onto final modules - one is extended essay on something niche and the other is something to do with trade in days of yore - pretty sure it isn’t called that! It takes place in the Fitzwilliam museum behind the scenes so sounds fun. He finishes about 17 June I think but staying on until the ball the following Tuesday. He has a job for four weeks at a residential summer school but is also short listed for 10 weeks internship in Cambridge but that is only feasible if accommodation provided as couldn’t afford a private let for that amount of time. Also got interview at nearby private school - the one at York that is universally hated on Mumsnet for good reason! But it would mean he would be home as can drive daily to that. He says he is very tired and really sick of revision! Roll on 1230 tomorrow.

need to go back and catch up on posts now.

crazycrofter · 27/04/2023 09:25

Thanks for new thread!

Seeline · 27/04/2023 10:18

Thanks for the thread

Comefromaway · 27/04/2023 12:48

Thank-you for the new thread.

Ds seems to be organised in terms of his assessments etc over the next few weeks but I think he may be struggling with his essay. He is far better at music theory than discussion.

Piggywaspushed · 27/04/2023 13:23

Thank you!

DS is coming home tomorrow for the long weekend for is 19th birthday. That is ridiculous. He cannot possibly be 19. I demand a recount.

ealingwestmum · 27/04/2023 13:55

😂 hope he has a good one Piggy

mummyinbeds · 27/04/2023 15:43

Thanks for the new thread @OrangeCinnamonLatte
Seems strange all this talk if end of year 1. DS hasn't gone back after Easter yet! He's currently glaring at an essay on French art. He definitely didn't sign up for that when he applied for French law. I keep reminding him that's the end of the year long module of everything he hates - French literature, film, art 😭

AnneOfCleavage · 27/04/2023 16:36

Found you all again after catching up with the last thread👋👋Thanks @OrangeCinnamonLatte

Can't believe some of your yp will be finishing their first year soon. 21 week holiday is sooo long @PhotoDad almost as long as her course has taken so far!

Loved seeing all the wildlife pics. We now have miniature frogs after taking some of our local friends' tadpoles. It's been exciting watching them develop. Interestingly we seem to have got an axolotl end up in our tank - never seen one before but it's gorgeous. We've popped the tank outside by our new pond and hope the frogs find it okay.

I hope your DH is okay @Delphigirl. Sorry to hear your news and yes i know what you mean about being a nurse, it's so much harder when it's your loved one.

Happy birthday to DS2 @Piggywaspushed enjoy the weekend celebrations.

My busy season of invigilating will soon be kicking off as exams start v soon. DD and I have signed up for quite a few as well as our other jobs so by end of June we'll be ready for the summer. DD's driving test is booked for July but we're hoping for an earlier one but what with all her jobs it's difficult to know when is a good time as you have seconds to say yes to a cancellation. I have a list of all the dates her instructor (whose car she'll be using) can't do but his wife is due a baby end of May so that's another thing to consider when booking - eeek! DH took her out today and says she is so ready but she is not the sort of person to book one for the next day - she's always preferred planning ahead and isn't the most spontaneous.

Good luck to all the yp with end of year exams and assessments.

crazycrofter · 27/04/2023 18:14

Dd isn’t back yet either, it’s very strange! She passed her driving test recently, most unexpectedly and she is going to Bristol tomorrow 😬 2 hours I think. Good luck with DD’s test @AnneOfCleavage hope it all comes together.

Sorry to hear about dh @Delphigirl . I would be the same with nursing duties, especially if it was dh!

Happy birthday to ds @Piggywaspushed , hope he has a good one.

Dd is off to France next week to visit a friend. How does mobile data work these days in Europe? Will we have to pay extra?

Delphigirl · 27/04/2023 18:33

Thanks Anne and crazy - and well done Anne to your DS passing her test! I’ve just been out driving with DD2 and am secretly thinking it’s no bad thing the first test she can get is mid-August…

Delphigirl · 27/04/2023 18:37

Dd
not ds
it changed it when I wasn’t looking

PhotoDad · 27/04/2023 18:39

Good luck/congrats with driving tests! Not on DD's radar. She has finished her first paid commission and posted it to New York today (!) and also voted by post in the local elections, a first for her. Next thing might be to find some work but she claims to need a week or so of sleeping first. Hmmm. And happy birthday to @Piggywaspushed DS!

Delphigirl · 27/04/2023 20:16

Hey that’s a real milestone Photodad!

ProggyMat · 27/04/2023 20:44

Thanks for the new thread @OrangeCinnamonLatte !

DD has been back in college for over a week, survived collections and is loving the content of her extra tutorials despite her initial chuntering about the increased workload/essays 😊
She finishes on 17th June and that’s her first year done and dusted- scary how time has flown!

@estherfrewen does your DS’ college - or the university- offer any financial support for living costs for students from low income households wanting to take up summer internships?
DDs does, so it could be worth enquiring?

@PhotoDad well done to your talented DD- I’m sure it’s the start of many!

estherfrewen · 27/04/2023 20:49

@ProggyMat glad your DD is enjoying her tutorials. I hadn't realised there might be financial support for the internship if successful. Will make sure DS asks - thank you.

@PhotoDad - well done to your DD.
