Thread 46 - GCSE Covid Cohort , Searching for Summer Solstice

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Be warned there might be lots of 'Uni Freshers' chat this time of year. My experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

Do you have prior experience of being lost in HK in the 90's @Delphigirl ? Do tell?
Anyhow they all got to Melbourne safely.
I think dd1 at the age of 24 won't want to do another family holiday ever again.
Dh has worked all the time in HK & left everything up to her, with pretty much sole responsibility for the other kids. Then got cross that Dd2 was missing.
That's normally my job, but I'm currently babysitting our sick elderly dog back home.
The 4pm sleeping sounds very familiar. Ds1 does this too. I've always thought it's associated with his ADHD. As he has it towards the moderate - severe stage. I find it equally frustrating, as he's then awake all night.

crazycrofter · 02/07/2023 20:57

@Cantonet ds, who has ADHD, is also prone to sleeping in the day and being up all night. When he’s in a particularly nocturnal pattern and has to get up early for something specific he will then stay up all night - as he did when he got his GCSE results. I got up, thinking I’d have to wake him but he wasn’t in his room! Checked my texts and he’d met a friend in the city centre at 7am and they were killing time until results were out…

Cantonet · 02/07/2023 21:07

Yes @crazycrofter ds1 does that too.
Then when I get really cross with him for sleeping all day he tries to stay awake as long as possible & falls asleep late afternoon🤦🏼‍♀️
Though he does seem to have a more normal circadian rhythm on his folate supplements. I think melatonin production is apparently cock-eyed in ADHD apparently.

PhotoDad · 03/07/2023 06:06

@Cantonet Wow, what an (ahem) adventure! Glad that she caught her flight in the end.

Isthisjustnormal · 03/07/2023 07:09

@estherfrewen : I had a call back after a mammogram last year - I don’t know if this is relevant to you but I was told that it’s much more common following first mammograms as they don’t have records as a baseline. Either way hope all goes well (mine was all clear and the staff were great: although I found the whole thing quite emotional. Will be thinking of you.

ExtremelyDetermined · 03/07/2023 07:19

Thinking of you today @estherfrewen Flowers

estherfrewen · 03/07/2023 07:26

estherfrewen · 03/07/2023 12:11

Well that was rubbish Monday! Biopsy results next werk but they are pretty sure it is breast cancer. Early detection so that's something

ealingwestmum · 03/07/2023 12:26

I’m sorry to hear this Esther, but the early diagnosis is really going to help define an effective course of treatment, so keep the pragmatic faith x

singingstones · 03/07/2023 12:28

Oh no @estherfrewen I'm so sorry to hear that. How are you doing, have you got someone to talk about it with, it's such a lot to take in.

Fingers crossed they are wrong but thinking of you while you wait to hear Flowers

PhotoDad · 03/07/2023 12:29

@estherfrewen Sorry to hear that. Hope all is well with you while you wait for the results.

crazycrofter · 03/07/2023 12:51

That must be a shock for you @estherfrewen and a lot to take in. Early diagnosis is good though. Sending thoughts and prayers for you 🙏

estherfrewen · 03/07/2023 13:02

Thank you. Work friend and mother in law both had it so people to talk to. Am feeling sorry for myself this pm and then back to it tomorrow and back to work until I get surgery date or whatever next week.

DS got three job interviews for hotels/cafes this week for when lifeguarding ends so that's good

Seeline · 03/07/2023 13:23

Sorry @estherfrewen - thinking of you 💐

Cantonet · 03/07/2023 13:35

@estherfrewen I'm sorry it's not what you wanted to hear. But I'm glad you've been caught early. Thinking of you.

Oblomov23 · 03/07/2023 14:58

@estherfrewen Flowers Flowers so sorry to hear that. Do you still want to go to work tomorrow? For normality?

estherfrewen · 03/07/2023 15:26

I can WFH so will do that tomorrow. I feel absolutely fine just a bit pi@@ed off so think working will take my mind off stuff!

singingstones · 03/07/2023 15:53

Always feel free to vent on here @estherfrewen Smile

283nouveauxnoms · 03/07/2023 16:57

Sorry to hear that @estherfrewen but glad it has been caught early. Sending unmumsnetty hugs.

EwwSprouts · 03/07/2023 17:03

@estherfrewen What a bum Monday for you. Early detection is the best possible start down the path. Pleased you have people who are close to you to talk to. Do have a moan and groan here when you need though. We're mostly in the demographic to know or know someone.

Delphigirl · 03/07/2023 17:34

I’m so sorry @estherfrewen . Early is good xx

MargaretThursday · 03/07/2023 17:59

ProggyMat · 03/07/2023 18:13
