This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Be warned there might be lots of 'Uni Freshers' chat this time of year. My experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had

I took DS2 to see Hamilton last November at his request, it was excellent.

Student finance application for next year now complete.

EasilyDirected · 28/02/2023 11:25

I'd seen it on Disney+ and listened to the soundtrack many times but you can't beat a live performance.

Comefromaway · 28/02/2023 11:30

No, it is amazing live. The choreography and staging is so innovative. Did you spot the bullet?

EasilyDirected · 28/02/2023 11:45

Yes, I spotted her in the film version as popping up at important moments but didn't get the full picture till I read an article about the character, so I was on the lookout this time. So cleverly done.

Belated happy birthday @EasilyDirected

Monkey2001 · 28/02/2023 14:35

I know we have moved on from insurance, but just thought I would share the usual counter-intuitive thing which happened when I added DS2 onto our electric car policy. Quote from Direct Line was £32 to add him for 2 weeks or £15.62 to add him to the end of the policy (5 weeks). He has held his licence for 15 months.

PhotoDad · 28/02/2023 19:10

DD has finished writing and illustrating the first story in a fantasy series she's been thinking about for years! I have a link to the website but it's "outing" as it mentions names. If anyone is interested, even just to look at the pics, then send me a PM (she's asked me to share it).

NCTDN · 28/02/2023 21:28

@Monkey2001 i didn't think they could go on electric car insurance until they were 21? Someone told me that and I never bothered checking!

EasilyDirected · 28/02/2023 22:23

Thank you @280NeuerNamen

When I first tried, I could not put either DS on the electric car insurance. I am guessing that the insurance companies now have more data and it has been normalised.

Oblomov23 · 01/03/2023 17:39

Happy Birthday ED.

Delphigirl · 01/03/2023 19:23

My ds2 is insured on our little electric car. Mind you it costs a fortune but I think that’s because he’s only had a licence for 18 months. He is 19

Delphigirl · 01/03/2023 19:24

Ooh happy birthday @EasilyDirected !

There is no rhyme nor reason to insurance! DS is 18 and passed his test 15 months ago, so £16 for 5 weeks was surprising!

Delphigirl · 01/03/2023 23:10

Yes I think just make up a number. There’s like a random number generator on the back end of insurance websitess

EasilyDirected · 01/03/2023 23:28

Thanks @Oblomov23 and @Delphigirl

Did anyone else on here's DC have an EHCP? My local authority have just sent me notice that they intend to cease DS's now he is at uni (you can't use it for support in HE because you get DSA instead). Part of me wants to keep it going in the background just in case something goes tits-up for DS at uni but I don't know whether this is reasonable or possible. I fought so hard to get it and then lived in fear of losing it for so many years that its really hard to let go.

Monkey2001 · 02/03/2023 08:47

Another thing on insurance, which I think I have shared before, is that the premium goes down a lot if you get it early. I support a girl (whose mum died in 2021) with life admin, she 18 years old, friend of DS2 . We have been teaching her to drive and she has her test on 22 March. We looked at insurance quotes and discovered that she could insure the little car she inherited from her mum for £415, starting in 3 weeks, but if she wanted it to start tomorrow it would be £600. So we set it up to start the day after her test as cancellation is free before the start date. If she fails the test we will cancel it on 22/3. I was able to add her car onto our policy so that I can drive it back if she passes - cost me 51p!

So my advice to anyone with a test coming up is to set up a policy from shortly after the test date which you can cancel if you don't need it.

We also did her student finance application and were pleased to discover that there was actually a box to tick to say that you were applying as an independent student because the parent who would have supported your application had died - I was expecting it to be much more complicated!

crazycrofter · 02/03/2023 11:36

Interesting stuff about the insurance! I'm still struggling to find anything for less than £800 to add dd to ours. I'm thinking I'd better do it sooner rather than later?

I had been thinking of renewing the policy end of Mar for just the two of us and then adding her for April, taking her off again and adding for July/Aug. But not sure if this will be more expensive than just adding her for the whole year from end of March!

NCTDN · 02/03/2023 13:22

@crazycrofter have you tried admiral? Their multi car policy saved us hundreds.

Monkey2001 · 02/03/2023 13:23

@crazycrofter have you tried getting a quote for a new policy on Confused.com starting end of March with all three of you on it?

Also worth looking at a policy with Direct Line for you and DH and adding her on when home. You used to be able to do 7 amendments a year and DL don't charge an admin fee when they change it unlike every other insurance company I have made changes with.

EasilyDirected · 02/03/2023 14:57

Making notes, my insurance is due in a couple of weeks and with any luck DS will pass his test in the next year, maybe I'd better consider all this. I am currently with Sainsburys and I think can make amendments online for free but get charged £25 to do it by phone, I will check this out.

crazycrofter · 03/03/2023 20:07

Direct Line won’t give me a quote! I’m not getting very far and the prices seem to be going up!

Monkey2001 · 03/03/2023 22:41

@crazycrofter Direct Line would not put either of mine on the policies for our estate car or electric car when they had just passed their tests, but the smaller diesel was OK. A year on I can put all family members on any car fairly cheaply.

icanbewhatiwant · 04/03/2023 07:40

Dh is still refusing to sell either of the dc's cars. Ds1's is parked on the edge of the lawn and the daffodils are trying to come up. So when dh was in Sussex I moved it. I told him it's not being parked back there until the daffs have finished. I don't know what he will do when ds1's insurance runs out in May. I don't see the point paying for insurance if ds1 is in NZ. It's annoying me having so many cars out on the drive. Plus one in the garage. We have a double garage but the lawn mower occupies one space. Men and cars 🤷‍♀️

Delphigirl · 04/03/2023 08:02

I know how you feel @icanbewhatiwant . We are currently a 4 car household even though there are currently only 3 of us here and only 2 have a driving licence! But when the boys come back in May/June they will need the cars and dd4 is learning so… I really want ds2 to take a car to uni in sept (even though it is discouraged) just to get it off my drive.
