This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Be warned there might be lots of 'Uni Freshers' chat this time of year. My experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had

Lovely visit to Ds up in York this weekend: Thank you to whoever recommended the star inn the city - we had the best Sunday lunch today! Great food d and charming informal service. Ds was on good form and seemed to enjoy seeing us :-)

Run of things that ultimately accumulated to a big f* it moment Eww, more of a shock to the husband at the time!

EwwSprouts · 26/02/2023 22:23

@ealingwestmum Sounds as if you have moved on very positively.

@Isthisjustnormal I think there were two of us :) Glad you liked it.

@GoldenRuby Those are fab!

Just home from Wales, not helped by the A1(M) being closed around Darlington. School tomorrow!

GoldenRuby · 26/02/2023 22:40

Thanks everyone for the mosaic love!

KingscoteStaff · 26/02/2023 23:07

Lovely weekend in Newcastle/Durham - although I had forgotten how COLD it is watching hockey!

EasilyDirected · 26/02/2023 23:33

Lovely mosaics ❤️.

We've had a nice weekend celebrating my birthday. We had tickets for a West End show for all four of us, with idea being that DS would come home for the weekend to go, but a couple of weeks ago he started saying he didn't really want to come home again so soon (he has been back 3x since Christmas) but offered to get the train to London for the day and meet us there. Which might sound nothing spectacular but for him it is a huge thing, he's never done more than a couple of stops on our local train without an adult. He pre-booked the tickets and organised taxis to and from the station (its several miles cross country) and all went well-ish on the day, we had a great time. However the lack of staff at his station meant he couldn't print out the tickets and had to travel without as he couldn't work out the machine, which did stress him out and we had to sort it together at Paddington. This is one of the things the rail strikes are about. Unstaffed stations and trains make it much harder for people with disabilities to travel, even if they are learning rather than physical conditions. I will encourage him to get qr code tickets on his phone next time.

Happy birthday @EasilyDirected !

NCTDN · 27/02/2023 14:35

I've just seen something about student finance for next year. When do ours need to apply for their second year?

Was just coming along to ask the same question!

Seeline · 27/02/2023 15:38

It's usually March time. If you follow SFE on FB they will announce it. DCs should also get an email....😁

Comefromaway · 27/02/2023 15:45

They have announced it today

EwwSprouts · 27/02/2023 17:16

Happy birthday @EasilyDirected ! Hope you weren't swamped by the Toon Army? Chaps on our train down gave us the heads up to avoid Trafalgar Sq, We went to see Derren Brown. What show did you enjoy?

Fiddlersgreen · 27/02/2023 21:08

Happy Birthday @EasilyDirected !

What did they announce today @Comefromaway ? I haven’t seen anything

PhotoDad · 27/02/2023 21:10

Happy birthday, @EasilyDirected!

I also got an email from Student Finance (I'm on their mailing list, which seems to be managed by The Student Room?). Applications for next year's loans are now open; although there's no rush, there's also no real point in delaying!

EasilyDirected · 27/02/2023 22:31

Thanks for all the birthday wishes, it was Hamilton we went to see - the only musical I stand a chance of getting DS to go to, we all really enjoyed it. It was Saturday not yesterday so no Toon Army - I was listening to all the build up to the match on 5Live yesterday and it sounded as though the entire population had migrated to London for the day. DD and I were in the West End the night Morocco beat Portugal in the World Cup quarter finals and that was a huge spectacle, I think DS would have found it a bit much despite being a football fan.

Isthisjustnormal · 27/02/2023 22:34

Happy birthday @EasilyDirected / hope you enjoyed Hamilton - we love it! We were at the Mind Mangler tonight (by the gang behind the show goes wrong etc) - loads of fun!

Comefromaway · 27/02/2023 23:02

glad you enjoyed Hamilton.

apparently it was challenging getting to Newsies at Wembley Troubadour Park.

EwwSprouts · 28/02/2023 08:49

Glad you all enjoyed Hamilton.
Trafalgar Sq was 'pre match drinks' Saturday early evening. You could hear all the clinking of bottles as they walked down the tube passagesways. No stereotypes😂

EasilyDirected · 28/02/2023 09:35

We managed to avoid any clinking bottles, it was the matinee so we were away fairly early and only used the Bakerloo line, I'm guessing most of them would have been on the Northern or Piccadilly lines.
