Thread 44 GCSE Covid Cohort - Countdown to Christmas & New Year

1000 replies

OrangeCinnamonLatte · 15/12/2022 12:21

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Be warned there might be lots of 'Uni Freshers' chat this time of year. My experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had

I toally missed Monkey's news Congratulations!

PhotoDad · 15/02/2023 06:16

Great music clips! Love seeing DC who get involved in... well, anything.

AlexanderHamilton · 15/02/2023 10:36

Here is the Rosanna clip I spoke about. It’s on Instagram but it’s public so you should be able to view

I love that we can celebrate all kinds of achievement both curricular & extra curricular here. We have a varied group of young people, each with their own strengths.

Monkey2001 · 15/02/2023 13:03

@Comefromaway I love the stage presence of your DS's band! You did not share the Rosanna clip.....

sazzy5 · 15/02/2023 13:55

@Monkey2001 I’m so pleased for your DS, it really is a journey. Now you can relax a bit.

We’re on our way back having visited DS in Exeter. I always feel sad when I leave, but he’s having a great time and doing well in his studies.

Monkey2001 · 15/02/2023 13:58

@sazzy5 that Exeter course does look great, DS would have put it as his 5th if it did not require Biology. Glad your DS is enjoying it. 💪

Monkey2001 · 15/02/2023 14:00

LOVE IT @AlexanderHamilton !

Comefromaway · 15/02/2023 14:03

It's an older clip but that particular night the adrenaline just took over and they fed off each others energy

EasilyDirected · 15/02/2023 14:09

Great news @Monkey2001 !

@PhotoDad and @AlexanderHamilton you have such talented DC!. AH - I am finally going to see your namesake musical foer my birthday next week, can’t wait (seen it on Disney+ and loved it).

Well, I have taken a day off work today to bring DS home for a flying visit to the orthodontist. The drive to uni and back was beautiful, 3 hour round trip but went in the blink of an eye, sun and outlines of trees peeking through the mist. When we got back he went to see one of his potential placement employers and they have verbally agreed to go ahead, just need uni to agree it is suitable (it sounds perfect to me and it is close to home so he can live back here and get there easily enough). Sitting in the garden now for a bit, the sun is out and the sky is blue. DH is taking him back after work so I can go to the pub with my mates don’t have to do the journey twice in a day.

EwwSprouts · 15/02/2023 16:45

That Rosanna clip is superb! What talented young men.

boxcar · 15/02/2023 20:33

@AlexanderHamilton that’s fantastic!

Comefromaway · 15/02/2023 20:34

Bless you, thank you.

PaddingtonPaddington · 16/02/2023 10:36

Love the music @Comefromaway, very talented

Congrats @Monkey2001 fantastic news on the offer!

I’m off to visit DD this weekend as it’s been 6 weeks since she went back after Christmas and no sign of her coming back till Easter. She’s having a good time but is very tired so will be taking her out for food and give her a hand sorting out some admin things and just generally catch up. So looking forward to it.

crazycrofter · 16/02/2023 12:19

Your children are so talented @Comefromaway !

NCTDN · 16/02/2023 15:11

I can't believe dd has only been back 4 weeks. It feels much longer. Easter is ages off Sad

OrangeCinnamonLatte · 16/02/2023 17:45

I love it @AlexanderHamilton so talented.

I'd hoped you'd figure out a way to share !

Unfortunately Dd has hardly done any performance lately, it coincided with lockdown and moving to sixth form. I think it was lack of confidence. She has joined two more choirs this term and working towards an assessment so is getting it back.. but her love for performance/composing is nowhere near where it was, just as well she is doing an academic based music degree then!

Congrats @Monkey2001 what a relief! I'd heard how competitive it is this year.

Statistics show that drummers can reach similar levels of exertion as a Premier League Football player ! Physiologically demanding .

Fab music!

I have a half-day tomorrow (staff training) and then I'll be popping down to visit DD, who is 6 weeks into term, for the weekend. She has booked meals in restaurants for the two of us. Then re-joining DW and DS who are off windsurfing.

Estate agent had somehow double-booked DD's friend, so they won't actually be sharing a house next year. But they will be very close, and are happy with that.

Comefromaway · 16/02/2023 22:21

Hope you have a lovely weekend

DontCallMeBaby · 17/02/2023 07:37

We’re taking DD back today after (most of) reading week. This weeks revelation - she doesn’t feel constantly hungry if she eats proper meals. Doubt somehow this will translate into her providing herself with proper meals.

Isthisjustnormal · 17/02/2023 07:39

Amazing creativity @AlexanderHamilton and @PhotoDad as always! Ds was drawing the metallic ratios for us on video call yesterday to explain his group work on fractals but I’m not sure it’s quite as shareable ;-) Looking forward to going up and seeing him next weekend for a belated birthday visit. And recommendations for York restaurants for a nice but relaxed meal??

EwwSprouts · 17/02/2023 08:05

@Isthisjustnormal Nice for lunch in the bar or on the terrace (terrace was full a couple of weeks ago!) bang in the city centre. https://www.judgeslodgingyork.co.uk/food-drink/lunch/

Not stuffy. Will need to book. https://www.starinnthecity.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/StarInnTheCity_AllDayMenu-Feb-2023.pdf

GoldenRuby · 17/02/2023 08:11

@EwwSprouts we had 2 nights in York enroute to visit DD in Durham earlier this week. We stayed at the Judges Lodging (the cellar bar being one of our favourite haunts from our student days), and ate at The Star in the City one night. We have similar tastes!
