Thread 44 GCSE Covid Cohort - Countdown to Christmas & New Year

1000 replies

OrangeCinnamonLatte · 15/12/2022 12:21

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Be warned there might be lots of 'Uni Freshers' chat this time of year. My experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had

I have a yr11 and a yr9.. the yr11 thread is quite quiet but I expect it will liven up as we get into mocks / exams!

Oblomov23 · 10/02/2023 17:15

ican ❤️

PhotoDad · 10/02/2023 17:17

I'm also on the quiet Y11 thread!

DD has, after a couple of wild-goose chases, secured a room in a 6-person HMO for next year, and one of her friends is trying to get the other free room there (complicated by lack of UK guarantor). Not entirely according to plan but at least she has somewhere, just within budget! Lesson learned for next year.

Year 9 - 2022/2023 Support Thread www.mumsnet.com/Talk/secondary/4617872-year-9-20222023-support-thread

Year 9 thread if anyone else has a year 9. I hope that worked.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 10/02/2023 20:28

I joined the Yr10 thread and apparently killed it. It was barely breathing though.

icanbewhatiwant · 10/02/2023 20:32

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn 🤣

The year 9 one hasn't had much posted on it yet. This one has been great, as was the other uni thread I am on, that has gone quiet now as most have graduated.

NCTDN · 10/02/2023 22:57

@handmademitlove @PhotoDad we'll have to liven up the y11 one Grin

Piggywaspushed · 11/02/2023 07:25

DS is competing in UniBrass trophy today... wish him luck everyone!

crazycrofter · 11/02/2023 08:18

Hope it goes well @Piggywaspushed !

EasilyDirected · 11/02/2023 08:42

Good luck PiggyDS!

I'm away for a couple of days at a family funeral, flying home tonight. DS is still writing to places for work placements for the summer, he has had positive responses from a few of them to follow up on, so that's looking good. It's likely to be voluntary though, paid work is hard to come by in his field when you are starting out. So he will be coming back home to keep expenses down. We have booked a big family holiday (cruise) in August, we have done a couple before and found them a good way of meeting all our different preferences for a holiday (DS and I like sightseeing, DH and DD like lazing by pools, we all like the luxury of all inclusive for a change (our other holidays are always self-catering or camping).

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 11/02/2023 10:50

Good luck to your DS @Piggywaspushed !

fingers crossed for your DS too @EasilyDirected it can be so depressing applying for jobs and getting knock backs so it’s good he’s had a few positive responses.

DS2 has his first head meeting of the year for rowing today, it’s looking a bit grey and chilli out there but at least it’s not raining.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 11/02/2023 10:53

I’m not sure we’ll go abroad this year as a family @EasilyDirected , it’s all a bit expensive but we have signed up DS2 to a couple of school trips, one abroad and one here, so at least he’s doing something exciting. We may go away for a week here too, not sure yet.

Piggywaspushed · 11/02/2023 11:23

Watching the Love Stream now. Birmingham Conservatoire predictably scarily good!

Piggywaspushed · 11/02/2023 11:29

Ermm. Live Stream. A Love Stream is a different thing.... I assume...

Heifer · 11/02/2023 11:36

Good luck @piggy DS - where is the comp?

Heifer · 11/02/2023 11:43

@EasilyDirected good luck to your DS too, sorry to hear re family funeral, hope all well as well as could do. Your holiday sounds lovely. Cruises not really my thing in theory but have to admit right I would jump at the chance.

We won't be going abroad either @JustHereWithMyPopcorn, a week in Cornwall or North Wales planned either renting a house or camping depending on finances when I book. DD wants to come along with bf which is of course delaying the whole process as not yet sure when free...

@crazycrofter how is your DD feeling? My DD said she had seen her at uni and she looked well.

Heifer · 11/02/2023 11:44

Brilliant typo @Piggywaspushed - made me smirk

Piggywaspushed · 11/02/2023 11:51
Blush
Piggywaspushed · 11/02/2023 11:52

It's at Warwick so not too far to travel for him! Other bands have to get up at 4 am. Although most are clustered around south/Midlands and up to Leeds and York.

Good luck to him.

very often it’s a toss up between Birmingham Conservatoire & Salford, though Huddersfield and RNCM are often in the mix too. Are there two categories/leagues again this year as I know things changed slightly during covid

Piggywaspushed · 11/02/2023 12:59

Yes , there are. DS in Trophy. No Salford or RNCM tis year . Apparently, Huddersfield always come 3rd so maybe it'll be their year!!

Comefromaway · 11/02/2023 13:13

That’s unusual for there to be no Salford.

@EasilyDirected Your DS is doing well! DS needs a summer job but won't start applying until the Easter holidays I fear.

@Piggywaspushed Brilliant that you can watch it all. Good luck!

DS got a call up to the uni third team for lacrosse this week. He hasn't even trained with them but they were so desperate that even with him they had no subs. 😂

crazycrofter · 11/02/2023 16:12

@heifer she seems to be managing well, she went clubbing on Wednesday night and then to the CU quiz on Thursday night. She was exhausted though, and needed a quiet day in yesterday, so she's definitely not her normal self yet.

Hope UoB finish in a decent position @Piggywaspushed !
