Thread 40 - Corona Cohort , Falling into Autumn 🍂

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Be warned there might be lots of 'Uni Freshers' chat this time of year. My experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and support to be had !

Safe travels to everyone going up and down the country tomorrow. Wishing lovely flatmates /corridor neighbours to all the DC.

Zebracat · 16/09/2022 20:47

@sazzy5 , I missed you were also Exeter. I’ll look out for the comedy car with inflatables! We are leaving our dogs at home. That’s why it feels like a holiday, we have an elderly standard poodle who now insists on sleeping between us.
@OublietteBravo . Very long way to the Penryn campus. Safe journey.

PhotoDad · 16/09/2022 21:29

GOOD LUCK! to everyone moving over the weekend.
DD now much more settled, has even tackled laundry.

Trying not to be but must admit being a bit miffed that Bath is university of the year ...

Why miffed @Piggywaspushed ?

Piggywaspushed · 16/09/2022 21:46

DS rejected it!

Monkey2001 · 16/09/2022 21:49

@Piggywaspushed at least he is not at the most expensive place to study outside London, there is always a silver lining to be found!

OublietteBravo · 16/09/2022 21:57

We’re currently in the Premier Inn in Portishead. Or about half way to the Penryn campus.

ealingwestmum · 16/09/2022 22:11

Thinking of all of you moving DC in over the weekend!

And to those who’ve already moved, hope they are all settling in well!

DS rejected it!

Fair enough!!

Move in day tomorrow. He’s excited. I’m happy for him but at the moment I’m just numb after the death of a close friend 2 days ago. I want to be excited and I’m sad that it’s all marred by what’s happened.

DontCallMeBaby · 16/09/2022 22:23

Well I now know nothing makes you feel as old as a first call with a university student child - have you made nice friends dear? 😂 DD seems to have a sociable flat, with two of them knowing each other being a pro not a con. She’s also met someone on her course with a less sociable flat - doors closed all the time. It’s such a lottery isn’t it?

Yes! True that.

Oh that's so sad 😔

Waves from North Somerset! I hope the rest of the trip goes well tomorrow.

Volterra · 16/09/2022 22:37

@Siriusmuggle I’m so sorry, that’s so sad.

Shimy · 16/09/2022 22:45

@boxcar Well done to your dc for getting through lessons and passing their test just in time to go off to uni. DS is arranging lessons at uni, luckily they have an instructor advertised by the SU.

@Decorhate Please how did you get your DS to start packing? what is it with these boys that seem to think packing is something you begin the night before they leave and the complete it the morning they leave? No amount of explaining why you have to start now makes a difference. DS just chuckles and looks confused. I'll leave him to get on with it whenever but I know without a doubt it all coming back on me when he realises he is no where near packed and its 20mins away from his drop off slot (1hr.30 to uni town).

cariadambyth · 16/09/2022 22:47

It seems lots of us will be on the move this weekend. Safe travels everyone.

Tomnooktoldmeto · 16/09/2022 23:01

Safe travels to everyone out and about this weekend, hopefully they’ll all settle quickly and be fully fledged before we know it

Mine both start Tuesday at 10 so I may just have asked to take a first day at Uni (school) picture before they leave with their new backpacks… I might have chosen those too but that’s another thread

Shimy · 16/09/2022 23:15

Good luck to all those dropping off this weekend! Phew, what a journey's it's been.

omnishambles · 17/09/2022 05:20

We arent going until next weekend and I have been away with work so I'm hoping that more stuff has been done by the time we get back.

singingstones · 17/09/2022 05:55

Safe travels and good luck to everyone dropping off today 🍀
Let us know how it goes

icanbewhatiwant · 17/09/2022 07:45

Good luck all those moving in.

Ds has text me more over the last 24 hours than he ever has. Nothing much though, just little things. He couldn't get his water to boil on the hob. It took forever. I told him it's just slow. But he was convinced he was doing something wrong. Then he text to say he'd cut his fingers twice on the knives, once rooting through the drawer and again washing up. He also text to say no trainers in clubs. Several other trivial texts too. Hopefully the rest of the housemates will arrive today.

Isthisjustnormal · 17/09/2022 07:49

Good luck to everyone moving in this weekend: looking forward to learning from your experiences! I hear you on Bath @Piggywaspushed - ds had it as his insurance (same grades as his first choice...) - still he's really happy with where he's going and I know it's actually a better choice for him: just '9non)-buyers remorse!

Hoping to do a packing and planning day with ds today, and finally boot up his DSA laptop which arrived on Thursday, and then he's agree to fit a family day into his socialisation schedule tomorrow, so we have a long walk and a Sunday lunch planned :-)

Monkey2001 · 17/09/2022 07:57

@Siriusmuggle that is so hard. That would really overshadow the start for both of you. Glad your DS is still excited about going, I guess you need to keep a plug on your grief for a couple of days, but it really is tough. 💐
