This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Be warned there might be lots of 'Uni Freshers' chat this time of year. My experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and support to be had !

@Fiddlersgreen I read something in ds1's paperwork from UEA saying no airers in the rooms. When I visited him, there were airers in the passage way...that was a real fire hazard as it was awkward to walk past. I didn't see anything about no airers for ds2. No...I don't tumble dry t shirts or jeans (jeans I might just finish in there)

I am home. It took ages. I knew a Friday would be busy. About 4.5 hours. It can be done in 2 hours 20. It took an hour to drive the 2 miles before the dartford tunnel. Then the a12 was stop, start as usual.

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn Ds is there and nothing in the way of time table or anything. Just the freshers events.

Ds managed to choose modules in the end after it saying none available. But there was only one option left each semester. So he has to do the only one. He said he didn't really want those choices.

He also messaged to say he'd gone back to uni and s girl was moving in. He said a quick hello, then left her with her parents unpacking. I messaged back and told him to knock on her door her when the parents were gone.

Good luck all those moving in this weekend.

Durham didn’t allow airers due to it causing damp but they did make the dryers free.

EwwSprouts · 16/09/2022 17:15

@Decorhate "He couldn’t be persuaded that shorts won’t be needed in Sheffield!" When we went to the applicant open day it was windy and raining. Half the academic staff in Biology were in shorts. The climbing/cycling vibe was strong!

AnneOfCleavage · 16/09/2022 17:16

@Monkey2001 and @CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee thank you so much. Does your DD use Stint for her shifts too then? If so, DD has asked me to ask if 3/4 sleeve would be allowed as that would make life easier.

Decorhate · 16/09/2022 17:39

@EwwSprouts 😂

OublietteBravo · 16/09/2022 17:40

I think we’re ready to go. Driving part of the way this evening because the campus is a long, long way away from home.

sazzy5 · 16/09/2022 17:40

@Decorhate my DS is the opposite it’s like he’s packing for his inter rail trip again, he’s trying not to take anything. We went shopping today to get clothes that fit, my seems so reluctant to buy clothes.
@Fonty @Zebracat we are staying outside of Exeter too, we had a dog to take as well, so limited options. I’m sure it will be very busy.

Benjispruce4 · 16/09/2022 17:46

DD is mainly packed. Just off to get a food shop to tide her over the first week. Pasta, pasta, pasta!

KingscoteStaff · 16/09/2022 18:02

@Benjispruce4 We are on our way north! Our plan is to drop off STUFF tomorrow morning and then head to Newcastle’s big Asda. Pasta high on our list, too.

Northumberlandlass · 16/09/2022 18:24

@KingscoteStaff the biggest ASDA is near the metro centre! We went to the one at Byker on Monday & it wasn’t well stocked. P

Does it usually show that fees need paying? Ds is getting a message up saying his fees need paying. There was one about accommodation, so he set up a direct debit. Then it says he needs to set one up for fees. Loans are all approved. So I'm not sure why it says that. It should go from sfe to the university.

Oblomov22 · 16/09/2022 18:37

@CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee

Cinnamon, sorry I've bought ds1 your burner. Does it come with everything you need. Or do I need to order anything else? Wax? Oil? For ds1 something manly?

Benjispruce4 · 16/09/2022 19:02

Yes we were going to shop en route but decided to get a bag of basics and can always pop out for more once we see what space she has in the kitchen. She’s a bit brighter now. I think she’ll feel better once there and met a few people. God I hope she’s happy there. Good luck everyone. Thanks everyone for the support. It’s been so helpful.

Piggywaspushed · 16/09/2022 19:16

Trying not to be but must admit being a bit miffed that Bath is university of the year ...

KingscoteStaff · 16/09/2022 19:18

For all the Archers fans, we are now at Trowell Services.

Fiddlersgreen · 16/09/2022 19:21

@Benjispruce4 DS has 3 letters here and one feels like it has a bank card in it.
of course, he’s not here to open them

Benjispruce4 · 16/09/2022 19:50

Oh that sounds good . She’s had an email to virtually provide her signature so it’s in its way but will probably arrive just after. Good excuse to take it to her next weekend.

Benjispruce4 · 16/09/2022 19:51

@Piggywaspushed stull no refund from York of the £200 accom deposit. Really out of order.

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 16/09/2022 19:51

Ooh I'm not sure I'll ask her !

Good luck to all those moving in this weekend.

boxcar · 16/09/2022 20:16

DD passed her driving test: so relieved!

Just waved DTs off on the last big night out with their mates. Having wine & an early night ready for tomorrow’s driving. Hope DD manages to pace herself tonight… It’s off to Brum for her in the morning whist DS dog sits. We have him for one more week before the nest’s empty.

Piggywaspushed · 16/09/2022 20:16

We got ours todaybenji!

Monkey2001 · 16/09/2022 20:21

@boxcar phew, that must be a relief to just get it done before she goes, well done to her! 🚗

Benjispruce4 · 16/09/2022 20:23

Well done to her @boxcar great timing!
Thanks @Piggywaspushed will check account.

Benjispruce4 · 16/09/2022 20:24
