Thread 40 - Corona Cohort , Falling into Autumn 🍂

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Be warned there might be lots of 'Uni Freshers' chat this time of year. My experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and support to be had !

talk about bad timing of my post - I hadn't read your last comment@Benjispruce4 . :-(

Benjispruce4 · 23/09/2022 18:51

@CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee Do you work there?

Not at NTU am afraid. I wish I could help 😔. I'd have a good look at the Student Wellbeing and Student Union pages and definitely investigate a peer mentor.

Just spoke to DD. There was a fight outside her room last night at 3 am and a threatened stabbing This is to do with the girl next door studying law!

Oh, how horrible. Why would this be connected to studying Law??

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 23/09/2022 19:26

Wow, some lovely rooms, I’m getting room envy by proxy!

@Heifer I’m sorry your drop off day wasn’t quite what you were hoping but we’ll done for staying calm under very stressful circumstances. Genuinely, I would have lost the plot, so really good going!

@Benjispruce4 oh your poor DD, I agree with @CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee try and encourage her to speak to someone in student support. I really hope things calm down and improve for her, no one needs this in their first week or at all.

Monkey2001 · 23/09/2022 19:44

Wow Benji, how much more bad luck can fate deal her?! I think I would be coming to the conclusion that a gap year is in order now, time to reset, resit or not, but start again the right way in 2023. Maybe she has more resilience than me though!

Grrr. Birmingham doesn't take post in so my plan to send DS hi retainers has failed. The bloody postman didn't put them through the door, even though there was plenty of room to do this. They have now gone back to the delivery office so DS will have to make his way there tomorrow. It's apparently a 25 minute walk.

Annoying.

How do they get post then?
@Heifer can i join you?

NCTDN · 23/09/2022 19:48

Oh and I don't think anyone is heading to the north west this weekend (Durham, Swansea, Loughborough, York are moving this weekend aren't they?) but if you are heading between Manchester and Chester in either direction, there's going to be major delays and diversions.

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 23/09/2022 19:48

@SallCymru how is your son doing?

Unless they actually hear a knock on their flat door (unlikely) they have to walk to the sorting office!!

I think it's really bad.

DontCallMeBaby · 23/09/2022 19:54

“Oxbridge will be still to go” Well that explains why the BBC has put their ‘what to take to university’ article up today! DD is nearly two weeks in …

Benjispruce4 · 23/09/2022 19:59

The connection to studying law is that the girl in the flat next door hangs out with louts who are partial to threatening stabbings and taking hard drugs.
DD had her bf with her thank god!

NCTDN · 23/09/2022 20:07

@Piggywaspushed even letters? I've sent dd a letter but no idea how she gets her post.

Piggywaspushed · 23/09/2022 20:12

No, letters seem to be fine...

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 23/09/2022 20:29

@Benjispruce4 shes a very stupid young woman hanging out with people like that especially if she wants to work in law! I can fully understand not wanting your DD living with that, I wouldn’t want DS there either.

@Heifer I think I need to join in your 1st Oct detox.

Isthisjustnormal · 23/09/2022 20:54

Another one signing up for the October diet and life detox - I need to lose some weight, get back to running and cut down on the booze. And get on top of the flipping housework…

Piggywaspushed · 23/09/2022 21:04

Apparently, DS is heading into Birmingham.

To drink. Not to locate the sorting office 10 hours early....

Isthisjustnormal · 23/09/2022 21:24

@Benjispruce4 : I can’t believe your dd’s experiences- honestly it feels like she’s getting the worst luck - hope things change for her soon. Definitely think I’d be encouraging her to be asking about moving flats at least…

EspeciallyDivided · 23/09/2022 21:26

Sympathy re the retainers @Piggywaspushed how frustrating.

@Benjispruce4 even more sympathy for you, your poor DD Flowers

All the best to those dropping off this weekend.

I’m up for an October reset too, I have been doing more housework/decluttering since DS went but there is a lot still to tackle. I am on the long running Flylady thread in Housekeeping which helps. I am also part way through an intensive “reset your eating habits” course which I have joined in desperation. I also need to exercise more.

Monkey2001 · 23/09/2022 21:33

Maybe the law student is cultivating her client base!

I should definitely join the reboot crew. I would love to lose a few stone before DS1's graduation in June and our house is such a tip!

icanbewhatiwant · 23/09/2022 21:51

I could do with eating less junk. I like chocolate and biscuits too much, cheese also. I'd like to lose a good half a stone or so. I'm not very overweight but still feel uncomfortable.

@Benjispruce4 sympathies for your dd.

mummyinbeds · 23/09/2022 21:57

DS just text to say he's out and it's too noisy to call. He has no idea how happy I am to hear that 😁

ProggyMat · 23/09/2022 22:02

Good luck to all doing drop offs at Bath and ‘The land of the Prince Bishops’ this weekend! 🍀🍀

PaddingtonPaddington · 23/09/2022 22:12

Yes please to joining in with Oct 1st, specifically decluttering and getting back on top of housework. I seriously need to go through every room, getting rid of accumulated things and clean.

DDs been gone a week already.

Lovely hearing about everyone’s DCs moving in days and photos of rooms.

278Newnames · 23/09/2022 22:16

Thanks @ProggyMat

Car is partly packed, leaving at 7 in the morning. I have been getting frustrated at his lack of organisation but he mentioned earlier that he has planned drinks in the flat tomorrow night then into the city for pubs and maybe a club. He hates clubbing so will try and avoid that bit. I am just relieved he has something sorted.

278Newnames · 23/09/2022 22:17

I also need the 1st Oct boost so am up for it.
