Thread 40 - Corona Cohort , Falling into Autumn 🍂

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Be warned there might be lots of 'Uni Freshers' chat this time of year. My experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and support to be had !

@Monkey2001 I’m trying. He was a bit of a mentor to my son and a huge influence on him too so he’s feeling it too. Today needs to be a happy day though.

kiwiandcherries · 17/09/2022 08:09

Thinking of you @Siriusmuggle as you face everything that you've got going on this weekend - so sorry for your loss.

And good luck to everyone moving in this weekend. Hope it goes well and that new friendships are made quickly and students settle well!

Piggywaspushed · 17/09/2022 08:17

We go tomorrow and DS has suddenly reminded me that he needs new football boots...

Benjispruce4 · 17/09/2022 08:34

I just hope everyone is friendly . Hate to think of DD in an unsociable flat. As usual my mind goes to the worst case scenario.

278Newnames · 17/09/2022 09:01

@Siriusmuggle so sorry to hear your news. That is hard for you with such conflicting emotions.

@Piggywaspushed football boots, one to add to the (as yet non-existant) list. Thanks for the reminder!

Difficult juggling being done here as DM had an accident recently and needs a lot of care. Doesn’t live nearby so I’m taking turns with DSIS to stay over but it’s full on. Not sure how we’re going to get everything done. Nothing is packed yet but at least we have until next weekend.

Good luck to everyone moving this weekend!

ealingwestmum · 17/09/2022 09:03

That’s so sad Sirius, but yes to making this weekend happy for both of you, and a toast to your friend at the end.

Benji, it’s so out of our control isn’t it, flat mates? DD has been put in with 4 x year 2 plus girls. Her heart sank at first, and then 4 hours later she received a group whatsapp with a wine/film evening for her welcome and already a count down on the kitchen white board for hers and another wirh birthdays in sept with plans in motion.

Bracing myself for a couple of weeks roller coaster riding! But, the radio silence right now is also a good thing (I think?)

Fruitygal · 17/09/2022 09:16

Really good luck to everyone!! It’s a big day for so many today so make sure you have battery chargers, ID with you for the kids and a box of chocs or sweets for the flat/housemates.

Hope the vac packing and car Tetris has gone well. Have something lovely to do next weekend to keep you busy and don’t be too sad they come home and clutter up the house again soon xx 🤗

DD has asked to go to a zoo or a National Trust day out today - request came in yesterday ….. so between all the leaving parties and dinners with friends we have a spot so very happy

Decorhate · 17/09/2022 09:21

@Piggywaspushed Ds1 will be pleased to hear that! He is probably slightly less academic than his siblings but is the only one to get into his firm choice… He loves Bath.

Hopefully ds2 will be chuffed that Sheffield is now ranked higher than Leeds which may remove any lingering upset at not getting his firm.

But obviously league tables are not everything anyway.

Volterra · 17/09/2022 09:46

I hope car packing is going well. We need to change our car as DS was 3 when we got it, I don’t think it will pass the next MOT, the scrap man picking up an old washing machine offered me £150 as thought it was scrap and it isn’t compliant with the clean air zone in Bristol coming in. Hopefully it will get DS there next weekend.

Have a bit of a dilemma about what to get as it has been great and moved sofas but I think something smaller is way to go and we’re getting rid of other one as hasn’t been used since we moved. I guess it would be cheaper for DS to send a couple of boxes home or us to do a couple of trips than have a big car all the time. Really hate buying cars

Fiddlersgreen · 17/09/2022 10:10

Good luck to everyone moving this weekend.
We have another week but most of DS’s friends go this weekend and also his girlfriend.
Maybe we’ll see more of him this week!

sofakingcool · 17/09/2022 10:11

Good luck to all moving in today!

singingstones · 17/09/2022 11:30

@Volterra I can recommend Cinch, we just bought a car from them and it was completely painless. We also went a bit smaller and automatic too, it's so nice!

Volterra · 17/09/2022 12:22

Thank you @singingstones , will have a look😊

Piggywaspushed · 17/09/2022 12:37

Our bigger car is a very smelly Vectra. DH just checked tyres and one was rather low. Hoping pumping it up will be enough. Vectra boots are not all that capacious.

OublietteBravo · 17/09/2022 12:44

We’re on campus and trying to work out what is going on with accommodation. DD seems to be in a shared room despite her having already paid for a single occupancy room.

Fonty · 17/09/2022 13:09

Oh no oubliette Hope you get that sorted. V stressful start.

singingstones · 17/09/2022 13:10

Oh no - good luck with that Oubliette and don't take any nonsense.

icanbewhatiwant · 17/09/2022 13:37

@OublietteBravo I hope you can sort it out. I'm wishing I'd complained about ds's university. There were a few complaining about the exact same accommodation on the Facebook page. It's just old and run down. But we are paying so much.

As for cars...I always drove a bigger car when the dc's were small. Discovery or Volvo. Now I don't drive them about anymore I have a smaller car. A bmw series 1. Dh has a bigger car, I hate driving it and can't believe I used to drive such a big vehicle. I had precious cargo. I prefer the smaller car now.

Piggywaspushed · 17/09/2022 13:49

Nightmare oubliette. Hope it gets sorted.

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 17/09/2022 13:56

Oblomov22 · 16/09/2022 18:37

@CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee

Cinnamon, sorry I've bought ds1 your burner. Does it come with everything you need. Or do I need to order anything else? Wax? Oil? For ds1 something manly?

You'll need some wax melts
You probably get some in Tesco etc !

Getting somewhat stressed about complete lack of info about the meal plan trial DS has signed up for. Money taken but no record of anything!

OublietteBravo · 17/09/2022 15:04

Sorted! She has a double occupancy room to herself. So two single beds instead of a double bed. Although it does mean double the wardrobe space and double the kitchen cupboard space, so probably not too bad on balance.

ealingwestmum · 17/09/2022 15:16

Brilliant result OB
