Thread 40 - Corona Cohort , Falling into Autumn 🍂

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Be warned there might be lots of 'Uni Freshers' chat this time of year. My experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and support to be had !

Apparently ds2 stayed the night with dh's dd and not in his new accommodation. I think the others are moving in Saturday.

EspeciallyDivided · 16/09/2022 10:05

HAs anyone been able to see The Times Good University Guide? I have a subscription on my phone but you can’t see it there, only on the website and I have a single device subscription and CBA to log out of the app, in on the browser and back again. If I had realised I would have picked up a paper copy in town just now.

Just done my main weekly shop. It is so weird not buying any of DS’s favourite foods (last week we didn’t need much for any of us as we had a Hello Fresh box so the full impact didn’t hit). I have to go to his school for a meeting this afternoon (I am a trustee of the Friends till the AGM next month). I suspect it might be hard driving away without him in the car at the end. When he was boarding last year I loved picking him up on Fridays, we are kind of used to him being away during the week but this weekend is going to be very strange (we deliberately didn’t plan to do anything in case we needed to pop back up to him). Oh well, I have no excuse for not getting on top of the house and garden now.

BlueMarigold · 16/09/2022 10:21

@Fruitygal good luck for moving in date!

My DD is off tomorrow. She’s very excited about meeting her new friends.

I am feeling a bit nervous about her going.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 16/09/2022 10:30

DD is moving in tomorrow too, BlueMarigold. She’s in Elgar Court, 2pm slot.
Were staying overnight tomorrow, so planning to take her to China town for dinner and then a food shop on Sunday.
No idea if airers are allowed, so we haven’t bought one yet.

singingstones · 16/09/2022 10:36

Sounds like a big weekend for lots of DC, good luck to all 🍀

Volterra · 16/09/2022 10:50

Good luck to all those going this weekend 🍀

@EspeciallyDivided I’m wondering what it will be like without DS. He also boarded in the week in 6th form so used to him not being around but we quickly slotted back into a routine with him on a Friday night. I have so much stuff that arrived this week that needs sorting in both garden and house I will at least have lots to sort, a house renovation to plan and signed myself up for some voluntary work I hope will lead to some work further down the line

AnneOfCleavage · 16/09/2022 11:21

Good luck to all who are moving in this weekend and throughout the next week.
DD is sad to be saying goodbye to yet another of her closest friends today. She's been making photo memory cards for them which have gone down very well.
She's also been rather busy getting lots of p/t jobs which she prefers to having instead of just one 16-32 hr week job. I'm happy she's being pro-active but she needs a plain black long sleeved shirt for one which proved impossible (also a white one that's fitted not oversized and floaty like most we've seen). Charity shops will hopefully come up trumps.

Cantonet · 16/09/2022 11:54

DS is moving in tomorrow too.
I had planned to move him in & then take him food shopping. Only to be told politely that the first Freshers event is tomorrow evening, so he may not have time to shop 😂

crazycrofter · 16/09/2022 12:31

Good luck to all those going this weekend, I saw they had the freshers marquee up at UoB when I was on campus yesterday. Hope everyone settles in well.

Zebracat · 16/09/2022 12:34

@Fonty is your B&B the farm one? We looked at that but then worried because it doesn’t do meals and ou4 time slot is 5 pm. So we are staying in a pub

Fiddlersgreen · 16/09/2022 13:03

We bought an airer, didn’t occur to me it might not be allowed! How would we find out?
I only tumble dry underwear, bedding and towels at home.
Don’t tops and jeans shrink?

sazzy5 · 16/09/2022 13:06

@Decorhate thanks for that tip, I’ve warned him it’s unlikely he will move. I think it’s all nerves at the moment.
We have found a hire car, cost just over £100, so not too bad. I was trying to go on the train but think DH could see I would have a fun few hours reading, while he was driving at 40 mikes an hour 😂the whole way.
@EspeciallyDivided im looking forward to buying very little meat, our bill will be much less, he is worried he will starve if he doesn’t get a job in Exeter (we are giving him a food allowance but not mega bucks)

DD loves working for the hospitality agency , every shift is different , with different people and relationships seem to be more easy going.

She got a plain black shirt from Primark and for her white shirt she used a school blouse she found unopened in the back of her wardrobe, I think was from Asda fitted with three quarter length sleeves. Although might be the wrong time of year to get a school blouse!

@AnneOfCleavage I was going to say Asda too. Their Click and Collect is great - direct.asda.com/george/school/shirts-blouses/girls-white-34-sleeve-school-shirt-2-pack/GEM26876,default,pd.html?cgid=D10M2G1C1

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 16/09/2022 13:36

Good luck to everyone moving this weekend. Most of DSs friends seem to be going this weekend so we may actually se a little more of him before he goes!

Quick question, have your DCs all been able to access their timetables and any reading lists etc?

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 16/09/2022 13:37

@Fiddlersgreen I bought an airer too. Like you, I rarely tumble dry more than pants, socks and sheets as everything seems to shrink!

Northumberlandlass · 16/09/2022 14:35

Thanks for the new thread @CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee

Well, I look DS to Uni on Monday - I had taken the day off (at a really busy time) to do it.

I had to wake him at 9am as he'd rolled in at 1am and was very hungover - he hadn't packed up the rest of his stuff. So we were running later than I had planned - got him into his room and went to do a big shop. I bought us some sushi to share for lunch.

We carried the bags to his room and he asked me when I was leaving.... I

It was much easier leaving him than I thought, partly because he was surly, hungover and entitled 😂Plus he kept the sushi!!!

I missed him on Tuesday as he always does the bins 😢
I didn't miss on Wednesday morning when I got in the car to go to work (we'd taken DP's on Monday) and there was no fuel in it!! 😡

I spoke to him last night & all is well - he mainly asked after the cats.

Volterra · 16/09/2022 14:35

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn DS has access to a general course timetable but nothing on it yet and has a timetable for a welcome week for his subject.

Seeline · 16/09/2022 14:46

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn DD seems to have access to her timetable for the whole year - including next semester. Welcome week timetable is a little unsettled - all change for the bank holiday, and not quite there yet.

Final bits of packing slowly happening now. Can't quite believe it's finally here.

Fonty · 16/09/2022 14:59

@Zebracat . Exeter was basically booked out, so we’ve booked a guesthouse in Yarcombe, 30 odd miles away vaguely in the direction of home. DH has insisted we won’t need to see DS on the Sunday!

Zebracat · 16/09/2022 15:25

Aha we booked a pub on our way home too. Think Saturday is better than Sunday. Some are there already apparently. Ours is in East Park. She asked me to help her today. Still waiting. A long lunch has just been taken so maybe something will happen soon.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 16/09/2022 15:59

Thanks @Volterra and @Seeline we can't seem to access anything at all at the moment. I'll check again next week..

DS now has an interview for the job he applied for on the morning of moving in day! 😣

Zebracat · 16/09/2022 16:07

Oh dear. Despite me saying for weeks that she needed to sort out a Student account, nothing was done. So from last week I have been suggesting she convert her current account to a student account.Turns out that trying that online at 3 30pm was a bad idea. She messed up her password and got locked out of her account and cant ring anyone. I know I told you so is not helpful but grrr. Just nee£ to know how bad this is. What does it mean?

Decorhate · 16/09/2022 16:48

Well Ds finally started packing his clothes today (leaving tomorrow). He seems to be taking every stitch he owns, including quite a lot that haven’t seen the light of day for months & smell musty. He couldn’t be persuaded that shorts won’t be needed in Sheffield! I may go through the bags & pull out anything that is really rank. I did suggest he start packing last week so I could get things washed…

Benjispruce4 · 16/09/2022 17:07

I’m not long home from work. DD was sitting in the kitchen all emotional. I’m hoping things can only improve.Still no HSBC card.
