This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Be warned there might be lots of 'Uni Freshers' chat this time of year. My experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and support to be had !

Good luck to Nottingham people today 🍀
@singingstones how stressful, fingers crossed for the scan today. We got our animals when DS quite young so remaining two are getting on a bit and we have been backwards and forwards to the vets with the dog last couple of weeks.
@icanbewhatiwant there’s a pack of 2 of those knives in DS’s stuff to take.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 22/09/2022 09:21

Well done, CinnamonOrange. It sounds like the hardest bit is over for DD, and she’ll be fine once lectures start. Your poor DH, though! Funny how there are certain situations where mums are ok but dads are wrecks.
I didn’t feel upset about DD going, only relieved that we’d finally got to the point of her starting uni - her whole school life has felt like a marathon, and we weren’t sure how/when/if she was going to get there.

Good luck to all the Nottinghamers today and this weekend. Hope all journeys and move ins go smoothly and your DCs find each other (have they got a secret MN handshake??)

DH spoke to DD last night, briefly, as she was on her way out to a freshers outdoor cinema screening. She says she’s having a great time and will talk at length another time.
She asked about freezing food on our family Whatsapp chat but didn’t reply to my answer. As long as she’s ok and not struggling, I’m ok.

DS comes home for the weekend tomorrow, so that’s cheered me up.

Really hope your cat is ok, singing. Your vet reminds me of when I took one of ours to be checked for an eye infection, only to get a call to tell me she had no white blood cells and suspected FIV, which would mean euthanasia. I had to tell the DCs and leave them in tears before going straight to the surgery. The senior vet then examined her and couldn’t understand why a cat with no white blood cells had such healthy pink gums, so ran bloods again to find there was nothing wrong with her - the first vet had simply not shaken the blood sample before testing, so all the white cells had settled at the bottom of the tube and not been drawn up!!

NCTDN · 22/09/2022 09:28

@Seeline that's what I'm expecting!

icanbewhatiwant · 22/09/2022 09:29

@Volterra they are super sharp. Stupidly I cut up frozen chicken breast with them...they did it brilliantly, but I also managed to nip the top of my finger and now have a flap of hanging skin 😣

Volterra · 22/09/2022 09:35

@icanbewhatiwant oh no 😢I have done similar with them in the past so must warn him. I rarely use my big kitchen knife now, love them!

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 22/09/2022 09:39

Aww thanks all.

I read that as the Nottingham Crazy Gang for some reason @Oblomov22 🤪

I think I said before I was selfishly wanting Dd to have Notts as a choice due to family members that way. It wasn't to be.

@singingstones that was an extra stress you did not need! Hope the cat makes a good recovery and manages to maintain a good quality of life with the lesion. Maybe the relief after the very bad prognosis made the actual news less upsetting. Hope the move goes well today.

Volterra · 22/09/2022 10:45

@CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee I think you are talking about your Mum . So sorry 💐Think I said before that Dad knew DS had a Bath offer as it was an early one thank goodness so he knew he had it and was his preferred option which helps a bit.

DH and I were saying last night that DS seems to have really grown up since we moved, lovely to see. We were a bit worried how he would settle as he hasn’t moved before but I think both him and DD prefer it here . I definitely do and hoping life won’t be quite so eventful from now on.

Cantonet · 22/09/2022 10:56

Oh dear with all the vet stories.
Sounds like some trainee vets just learning on the job. Dd1 is in her final year & due to Covid has had much less practical experience than she would normally have had. Plus the teaching in the clinical years is highly variable & very dependent on the practices.
We are also having dog traumas here.
Our Spaniel is in stage 3 kidney failure & had rocketing BP. He also happens to have a pouch within him that collects poo & has to be manually removed which understandably he hates ( & he really cries). Hopefully the vet can operate now, as his BP has dropped from 240-140 with the judicious use of lots of pills.

Cantonet · 22/09/2022 11:11

G)The very best of luck to all the Nottingham-ers over the next few days 🤞
DS is currently too busy in Surrey to answer my calls .....

Oblomov22 · 22/09/2022 11:45

All in. Good luck to others. Off to lunch.

Well done @Oblomov22 I am staying home on Saturday, feeling very conflicted about it but the drive home in the car with exdp didnt fill me with joy!

mummyinbeds · 22/09/2022 12:11

We're here too @Oblomov22 . DS's room looks the same with additional bags and stuff everywhere at the moment 🙂

Monkey2001 · 22/09/2022 12:35

@Oblomov22 outrageous to think he can manage without a rug and plants! 😉

Oblomov22 · 22/09/2022 12:38

Good luck mummy.

It's a basic room but Its fine. No fluffy bits!

True Monkey. As we just walked through the city centre marketplace he did mention getting a couple of plants though.

Fiddlersgreen · 22/09/2022 12:52

@NCTDN we bought the same knife. Also wanted one with a cover as it will just be thrown in DS’s “kitchen box”

Shimy · 22/09/2022 13:08

I saw those exact knives with the covers and nearly bought them but didn't in the end as I know ds will just lose all the covers within a matter of days.

EwwSprouts · 22/09/2022 13:28

Good luck to the Nottingham gang. Feels as if you should have gone together in a charabanc!

@CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee & @Volterra Great updates. Hope they settle in quickly.

Hope all the pets still have much happy life.

Volterra · 22/09/2022 13:58

@Oblomov22 that’s a flash forward to what DS’s will look like on Sunday, similar duvet cover too. Only difference is DS’s beloved sunrise alarm clock 😀

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 22/09/2022 14:16

We’re here with a very similar looking room!!

it has now been put together and looks much less prison like but DS is in those photos so can’t post them. We have done an emergency dash to the shop for an x-box controller and extension lead as all the plugs are in one corner behind the fridge! Now eating a sneaky Pizza Hut pizza - haven’t been here in years!!

Good luck everyone!

Zebracat · 22/09/2022 14:40

Lovely to see the Nottingham people settling. I think you should have made the effort and selected an outrageous duvet cover, or pen top or laces that you each insisted had to be used, so that you could recognise each other’s kids!
@CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee that really does sound very encouraging.
I am reeling from a shocking event in my family, which our girl should be told about, but I can’t bear to rock her world.

Zebracat · 22/09/2022 14:42

I know what it should have been, a rucksack!

mummyinbeds · 22/09/2022 14:51

@Zebracat 🤣🤣

Benjispruce4 · 22/09/2022 16:03

Good luck all. Sorry to hear that @Zebracat . May not be the right time to share . Tricky one. Hope you’re ok.

Benjispruce4 · 22/09/2022 16:50

Another 38 mins on a hsbc ‘customer service’ (joke) line . Still no card but now I have to go to a branch to collect it next week. Not sure it’s worth £100 now as I’ve probably spent that on mobile call fees.
