Thread 40 - Corona Cohort , Falling into Autumn 🍂

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Be warned there might be lots of 'Uni Freshers' chat this time of year. My experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and support to be had !

Student loans- those that moved in this weekend, have they received the first installment of their loan yet? DDs SFE account said she would get hers on 19th, but the emergency bank holiday meant that this didn't happen. She still hasn't had anything.

Benjispruce4 · 22/09/2022 16:53

DD hasn’t had anything.

icanbewhatiwant · 22/09/2022 17:05

@Seeline ds's had the 19th on his too. I have asked him whether he's received it. I don't expect a reply though.

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 22/09/2022 17:30

Aww bless you for remembering @Volterra it was my sister and her daughter, my youngest niece who is growing up to fast! Dd just didn't want to go North for some reason 😕 😒

Nothing for DS either. His original date was the 19th, last week it changed to the 16th and said "ready to be paid", however he's received nothing since.
His friend had exactly the same and he received his money last Friday Confused. I've suggested he give it the three working days and call first thing tomorrow

ProggyMat · 22/09/2022 17:40

Well done to all that have successfully dropped off in Notts!
@JustHereWithMyPopcorn that’s a fabulous view from your DS’ room!

Oblomov22 · 22/09/2022 17:48

Just got home. Ds has had dinner, met more than 100 people he says, and is off out now. Pleased he's settled.

kiwiandcherries · 22/09/2022 17:49

@Seeline my dd was due to get her first instalment on 19th Sept but due to the bank holiday received it on the 16th after enrolling on the 10th.

Monkey2001 · 22/09/2022 18:03

@Zebracat nice one re rucksacks. Hope the other news is surprising rather than upsetting. Sorry your calm time has been spoiled. 💐

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 22/09/2022 18:10

Just home now and I’m exhausted as I barely slept last night on top of 270 miles of driving and lugging bags and boxes. The only comms I’ve had from DS is a text moaning about the fact the WiFi keeps dropping out and his phone keeps switching to data!

@ProggyMat hes got the quiet side of the block and a nice park view, it’s better than the other side for sure.

@Zebracat I’m sorry to hear you have bad news, sending hugs to you all. X

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 22/09/2022 18:12

@Oblomov22 wow your DS has really settled in! I doubt mine has said hello to anyone yet!

Piggywaspushed · 22/09/2022 18:34

I have just seen some pictures of some digs in Bournemouth on WIWIKUA...they have an actual SMEG fridge freezer!!! Shock

blinkbonny · 22/09/2022 18:35

Hello everyone, happy to find this thread. My DS leaves tomorrow for Uni of Nottingham and I'm not much looking forward to it, but at least he is! Helpful to read everyone else's experiences to give some context and comparison to whatever he may encounter. Just saying hello, no specific questions or anecdotes yet, but here for the learnings Smile

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 22/09/2022 18:37

Hello @blinkbonny another one to join the Notts clan! What is your DS studying and what halls?

blinkbonny · 22/09/2022 18:40

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn Sociology, Willoughby. He thinks he's in the new part/annex of Willoughby (identified by not having a letter in the room label) and is a little worried about that, and slightly concerned how to be sociable when not in a flat. Still it sounds like being in a flat is also not a guarantee of social life, which he's also seen with his siblings' experiences. But that's all he's mentioned so far!

ealingwestmum · 22/09/2022 18:40

Slick Oblomov, very slick!

Hello blinkbonny, welcome.

ealingwestmum · 22/09/2022 18:41

Looks like a good room settling in day for the Nottingham gang so far, best of luck to the remainder over the coming days!

Oblomov22 · 22/09/2022 18:51

Welcome blink.
Popcorn let me know how your ds gets on. Shall I get my ds to introduce himself. Would that be wierd?
(Anyone seen my list on WIWIKAU Wink)

I don't want to be full on with any of you, don't want to be wierd. (Was a bit sad I didn't get to meet anyone today) I just want your dc to be ok.
How is Singing?
There are at least 9 of us. Crazy they can make sure dd is fine when she arrives Saturday.

blinkbonny · 22/09/2022 19:08

I have t yet read back far enough to be clear on who else is at Nottingham. Is that where your DC are @JustHereWithMyPopcorn and @Oblomov22 ?

Oblomov22 · 22/09/2022 19:12

Btw I thought Rutland rooms (yes I know I deliberately bought the cheapest/ most basic) were very basic indeed. A bit tired looking.

All the staff were late, had no idea where block D, or our room was. 3 people had no idea where the bike shed was. I had to go back to the original key collection to later get a key for his bike storage.

Petty things. Because he's fine. But it could be better.

icanbewhatiwant · 22/09/2022 19:29

@Oblomov22 the room looks ok 😉 We have one of the most expensive set of rooms at Sussex and just as basic, with a carpet that is starting to fray, small holes in the desk, stained carpet and chair. Some of the rooms on the WIWIKAU page look really nice.

Oblomov22 · 22/09/2022 19:33

Rooms ican? Grin
Why? You seen any?

Northumberlandlass · 22/09/2022 19:40

Just spoken to DS - a mid week freshers chat was useless. He already sounds like he has freshers flu! Says he’s been getting in at 4am every morning & needs sleep!

Went on a subject away day at local venue for team building today & said it was good fun & they got fed.

He’s signed up for a few sports at the freshers fair & has lots of food tokens etc too.

He’s got a couple of school friends nearby & is spending a lot of time with them, I’m trying to encourage him to spend time with his flat mates!

Yes DD got hers today.
