Thread 39 - Covid Cohort - Our Adult Children Now Post 18

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 30/08/2022 18:01

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Be warned there might be lots of 'Uni Freshers' chat this time of year. My experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and support to be had !

Fab news @ealingwestmum !

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 08/09/2022 15:43

Fab news @ealingwestmum congrats to your DD!

Very sad news about the queen, it really is the end of an era.

ealingwestmum · 08/09/2022 15:45

Honestly GoldenRuby, the college the girls had been allocated just seemed so good on every level (well, apart from the alleged abundance of potatoes with each meal!), it was hard for DD to walk away from.

very best of luck to yours, I look forward to hearing how the Durham gang are getting on here :)

My shamrock was a yes Delphigirl!

it felt weird to shout it out given the current news. No matter how people feel about the monarchy, she is to me right now, an elderly lady who has had a very good run, but seemed broken after the passing of her husband. All human at the end of the day :(

Oooih I thought it was just for luck!
CONGRATULATIONS to her! 🎉🥳🥂

Zebracat · 08/09/2022 15:53

So pleased for your girl@ealingwestmum . Although how you manage all of this to another country I don’t know, hard enough with 300 miles of road and no borders. Such an adventure though, sure it will be grand!

OublietteBravo · 08/09/2022 16:00

Congratulations to your DD @ealingwestmum!

Woo hoo @ealingwestmum - black velvet to celebrate? (Guinness and Champagne). ☘️🇮🇪💚🌟

ealingwestmum · 08/09/2022 18:41

You lot are SO lovely. Thank you all.

Truth is Zebra, I’m a bit lost from here. It’s only over the water, but what, no BBC or C4? She’ll work it out. She’s got 6 days to.

Monkey, that sounds…just hideous 😂

ealingwestmum · 08/09/2022 18:44

Damn. Just heard the news.

EspeciallyDivided · 08/09/2022 19:01
Sad
PhotoDad · 08/09/2022 19:12

Wow, well done @ealingwestmum!

DD and I set off early this morning as we were both awake. I returned home 11 hours and 510 miles later, about 20% of it through very heavy rain, and am now going to have some wine and go to sleep as I have a busy teaching day tomorrow. I'll probably wake at around 4 a.m.... suggestions? Just stay up longer if I can?

DD napped a lot of the drive down as she was feeling poorly, but thankfully perked up on arrival and shooed me away after unloading so that she could chat to her new housemates (four out of five are now there). She has a lovely snug room which was a little bigger than she was expecting. The only wobble when she called home tonight was a "To the Occupier" letter from TV Licensing threatening all sorts of penalties if she doesn't get a licence, which worried her (she's conscientious) but we could explain that she doesn't need one.

Good luck to everyone else now that terms are starting!

Piggywaspushed · 08/09/2022 19:33

Just echoing all the congrats.

And then splatting the thread with news that DS has covid....

Isthisjustnormal · 08/09/2022 20:48

Well done @ealingwestmum 's dd: so delighted for both of you!
I'm just waiting to go and pick ds up from the station and find out how his early settling in session went at York: really impressed by the idea of that extra support to get them used to the campus and uni life, so hoping it was a positive experience!
