Carrying on from the 2019/20 Uni students thread let’s talk about what it’s like to have our fresh graduates home, for some of us invading our nice empty nest, for all of us creating a new household dynamic…….

@VanCleefArpels totally agree but DD is 16 and has yet to discover the joys of more fashion-forward clothes shopping. I personally find BM clothes very boring and dislike the wishy-washy colours. Fine if you've got a Los Angeles base tan and the sun shines 24/7 but somehow the look doesn't translate so well to UK climes.

VanCleefArpels · 29/07/2022 13:42

DD was “too big” at size 10 for BM at 16. It did have an impact

Benjispruce4 · 29/07/2022 14:18

Yes I agree about BM. DD2 has one T shirt of theirs from when she was around 16 and when it’s on the washing line it looks like a 5 year olds’. It’s stretchy but I think it’s an unhealthy ethos. My two like Urban Outfitters, Zara, Pull & Bear, H&M plus a bit of ASOS and get a fair bit from Vinted and Depop now. This makes me laugh as I’ve always been a charity shop fan and oh how they scoffed!

Benjispruce4 · 02/08/2022 16:53

DD still to start at new job .They’re waiting for background checks to complete but had said she was starting on Monday so she stopped her other work and is now stressed at losing money. It never runs smoothly does it?

bigTillyMint · 03/08/2022 01:51

@Benjispruce4 oh no!

The wait at the CS for background checks to be done is months - as two of DDs friends discovered.

Benjispruce4 · 03/08/2022 06:31

I hope not! She’s been told days.

Notagardener · 03/08/2022 06:54

Ah just found you...
Next week we will be picking up dc1 stuff from London as his room contract is finishing mid Aug.
He is planning to go abroad for 6 or 12 months but will take some time to get organised.
Currently also have a lot of stuff from Dc2 who is in between student accommodation. Moving mid September.

VanCleefArpels · 03/08/2022 07:19

DD had to wait 8 weeks after her job offer to start because of security vetting. It was very thorough - she had to provide details of all her social media plus her student housemates and us of course

OP posts:
Benjispruce4 · 03/08/2022 08:10

Cripes! Surely the company would know how long it takes? They seem to think days. It’s not the type of job that would warrant extra checks.

LouisCatorze · 03/08/2022 08:25

Well there are various different types of checks aren't there, depending on role and sector? @VanCleefArpels your DD's sounds more a 'national security' type of vetting process. I recall reading years ago that for MI5/MI6 type roles they would effectively 'vet' everyone in a candidates life but hadn't realised that had become more of a thing more widely. Recall thinking that seemed quite harsh given that young people starting out at uni wouldn't necessarily be putting a lot thought into the 'suitability' of their housemates!

I hope your DD gets her clearance soon @Benjispruce4 . It must be very frustrating, and a shock to be income-less even if only for a short time.

VanCleefArpels · 03/08/2022 08:32

Not quite MI5 but yes law enforcement area (civilian) . We did have a wibble about the vetting of the housemates - who knows who has a dodgy Uncle or whatever lurking in the background!! The social media checks reinforces the warning we have given the kids for years : if you wouldn’t want Granny to see something then don’t put it on the internet 😂

Benjispruce4 · 03/08/2022 08:36

Ha ha yes quite @VanCleefArpels ! DD’s role is in management consultancy so hopefully not overly stringent. I’m used to DBS checks working in schools but didn’t expect this for her role.

Benjispruce4 · 03/08/2022 08:37

@VanCleefArpels Was your DD told the checks would take that long? DD was told she’d be starting this week.

Benjispruce4 · 03/08/2022 08:47

OK, DD has logged in to DBS site and has got clearance so hopefully she’ll hear today. She doesn’t think there are any other checks.🤔

VanCleefArpels · 03/08/2022 09:30

@Benjispruce4 yes she was - her start date was then fixed after it came back clear (phew!). It was a small blessing really as it meant she had some breathing space after coming home. My older one came home on a Friday and started work on the Monday - not ideal!

OP posts:
Benjispruce4 · 03/08/2022 09:40

Yes I can understand that. DD home a month now and is itching to start something new(bored with us) though I am trying to get her to appreciate her last few days of sleeping in. Falling on deaf ears unfortunately.

bigTillyMint · 03/08/2022 10:05

Lol, DS is enjoying not doing anything! Other than partying, of course!

Benjispruce4 · 03/08/2022 10:18

Your DD has local friends and a gf does he @bigTillyMint ? DD is single and only one close home friend is around, others are staying in uni cities over the summer or on a course that is ongoing/placement (paramedic) so she’s a bit lonely.

bigTillyMint · 03/08/2022 10:24

Oh yes, I can see that @Benjispruce4 - my two feel very lucky that we live in London - school friends and uni friends that are moving to London for jobs.

Benjispruce4 · 03/08/2022 13:45

Panic over, checks are in and she starts in the office tomorrow !

bigTillyMint · 03/08/2022 13:59

That was a quick change!

Hope all goes well - is it f2f in person?

ssd · 03/08/2022 14:11

Can i join in?
Ds is moving to London with a graduate job but cant find accommodation. We're in Scotland so cant nick over to check places out. Hes been looking on sparerooms but keeps getting in too late. Getting to be a worry now.
Hes working in Westminster. Can anyone offer any advice?

bigTillyMint · 03/08/2022 14:16

South London is quite convenient for Westminster by bus, but he would need to check individual areas (use Google maps - better than the TFL site!) for times.

I know it’s really hard to get a flat/room in one atm - they are going fast. Probably easier in person, but he would need somewhere to live whilst doing that, obvs. Very tricky.

bigTillyMint · 03/08/2022 14:17

If he finds an area/poss flat I’m sure there’s a few of us who could advise on safety, etc

ssd · 03/08/2022 14:19

Sorry to jump straight in with a question..
