Dressing Girls

Lurked here for ages

In posting this I will probably come across as old fashioned, but here goes. My question why is it becoming increasingly rare for girls to wear white socks? I was at a childrens party last Saturday and among the girls at the party, all under the age of ten, only mine wore white socks, At the first communion I attended a few weeks ago most girls had bare legs, while quite a few wore stockings a minority wore white socks.

I have twin girls aged seven, I like them to wear skirts or dresses and knee high white socks or ankle white socks when it is warm.

Got a letter from school today telling me that their winter uniform will now be gray socks

No idea but dd always wears white knee length socks because she has orthopaedic splints to help her walking and the plastic would make her legs sweat otherwise.

Each to their own I guess. Why are you (and I for that matter)worrying about socks at 1am?

(Genuinely curious emoticon)

I just got home from working and been reading the campaign let girls be girls and this is related; kind of.

Winter uniform is grey socks, except ummer uniform when it is white socks. Fine By me.

First communion will be white socks and cotton dress, thank you, Even though this will cost me ££££ more than a satin dress. DD is not getting married; she will be taking first communion, and I will tell her what to wear. This will not me a shirt and tie like all of the boys, as she hopes.

DD will be wearing white socks and start rite shoes until she leaves for uni.

FFS white socks get filthy really quickly or go yellow in the wash. What's wrong with black, navy, grey, green or purple socks?

LynetteScavo · 10/07/2010 02:08

White socks go grey in the wash, not yellow.

And any colour but white looks shit with a communion dress, but you wouldn't understand that SGB. 7 is too young for tights/fake tans with communion dress.

Dark coloured socks looks pants with a light coloured dress skirt. Fine if you are doing the "my son can wear a skirt if he wants thing" but not so fine if you are trying to co ordinate a little girls summer out fit.

I'm not into knee high white socks (must be ankle socks here)

Othersideofthechannel · 10/07/2010 11:53

Maybe they all have older brothers?
DD mostly has boys socks.
She wears bare feet and sandals to weddings.

EveryNameTaken · 10/07/2010 12:09

White socks look really nice on a girl in my opinion and so what if get filthy or go grey in the wash - they will be OK for their new uniform then

White socks are really cheap, £1 for 3 pairs, they only last a couple of washes if that.

dd wears white socks and white shoes for summer parties

but only for summer parties - rest of the time it's stripes / colours / bare legs

SueSimsHair · 10/07/2010 18:04

What age are we talking about here?

DD (9 in August) wears white socks if it's for school in summer, grey tights in winter, but at other times wears other coloured socks, or tights.

She wouldn't want to wear white and I wouldn't make her, besides white is such an impractical colour.

In summer it's mainly bare legs and sandals if it's warm enough, jeans if it's not.

She is just starting to get into fashion, for her last school disco she wore a black dress over skinny jeans with black converse and looked great.
Nothing inappropriate but still trendy.

spanxaremyonlyfriend · 10/07/2010 18:09

My dd wears white socks at school in the summer but blue in the winter. It has never occured to me to put her in white socks at any other time. She only wears skirts and dresses and she wears coloured or pattened sock or tights, which may or may not match her clothes.

SpringHeeledJack · 10/07/2010 18:12

I begged my mum for white socks Like Everyone Else

she said they showed the dirt; instead I had to wear navy blue dark green and grey

the shame!- and the daily taunts of "boys socks! boys socks!" -so of course as soon as my dds were big enough I put 'em in white

once only! my God- the filth!

Mum- you were right

castille · 10/07/2010 18:16

I don't get it. Why do you particularly want your girls to wear white socks?

SuziKettles · 10/07/2010 18:20

I remember the feeling of putting on a brand new pair of white knee socks - just the best

Mostly though I had one halfway down my calf which, along with my permenantly untied shoelaces, was not a good look.

ShadeofViolet · 10/07/2010 18:25

White socks go grey, or yellow if you bleach them like I do.

They are a pain and darker colours are much easier than 'Virgin' socks.

MangoTango · 10/07/2010 20:15

My dd wears white ankle socks with her school dress in Summer and either white or coloured out of school. Sometimes white knee socks in Spring or Autumn with school uniform, but I do think they look very 70s. Probably because we wore them as kids in the 70s! In Winter always grey knee socks or tights with school uniform. I think they look better and white knee socks would get muddy in Winter.

Orissiah · 13/07/2010 10:54

What a curious thread, I am baffled (and laughing my head off!). My DD wears all kinds of socks (including white ankle socks) and tights and also wears her legs bare too. Depends entirely on my mood, her mood, the weather, the situation... I certainly don't lose sleep over it though ;-)

My dd sometimes wears white socks, as does my ds - it depends what they are wearing them with and what they fancy that day. What colour socks other people's children wear has never even crossed my mind unless they were without shoes outside or on a dirty floor.

scaevola · 29/03/2013 16:12

White socks are part of the uniform for DD (always with summer dress, optional if other uniform)l. So we've a good supply in the house and she wears them a lot of the rest of the time. And I expect it'll stay that way until the end of the primary years.

feesh · 29/03/2013 16:16

How the hell do you get a 14 year old to wear white knee high socks? I was brought up in the 70s wearing the things, but I am pretty sure once I got to 14 I could wear what I liked and it sure as hell didn't involve any white socks!

What a weird thread! Who cares what other people's children wear on their feet?

Startail · 29/03/2013 16:21

I can give you the answer in one word
trampolines

We don't own a single pair of white socks that are actually white due to walking across the grass to this object.

It doesn't matter how often I yell, bare feet or shoes, but NOT yPUR SOCKS! They still trash them.

Thus we do tend to own socks and tights that are dark, mud friendly colours rather than white.

NightmareSpoon · 29/03/2013 16:33

I believe in letting my children choose what they want to wear when not in school uniform - as long as it's reasonably priced, practical, easy to wash and doesn't require ironing.

ChippyMinton · 29/03/2013 16:44

DD(9) wears white ankle or knee socks, or grey tights, for school.
The rest of the time she's in leggings or jeans with every other colour socks but white.
She did wear white ankle socks for her First Communion, but only after she'd walked to church with bare feet in her pumps, and they rubbed.

What do girls wear at secondary school? I've not seen any older girls wearing white socks.

BabyMakesTheBellyGoRound · 29/03/2013 17:28

Dd's wear trousers to school and whatever coloured socks underneath. I wouldn't be bothered with white socks (or white clothes in general for my kids) cause they look filthy in no time.
