DS maintains he is the only one in his year (5) without a mobile phone. Is this likely???

My 10yo does not have one. I did let dd have one in Yr 5, but only because she wanted to walk alone and has a disability that means she can collapse very suddenly- so made it clear it was only for emergency calls. She only started using it socially in Yr 7.

My dd is 9 and is the ONLY one in her class who hasn't got a phone!

At DD1's school, phones have to be checked in at the office at the beginning of the day and collected at the end. There are maybe a dozen phones in the basket, in a primary school with two classes of 30 per year.

respect Mrs Rufallo. Do you mind elaborating as to why not?

mrsruffallo · 20/06/2010 22:00

I just can't bear the way everyone fiddles with them all time
I like to concentrate on what I am doing when I am out
Never felt the need
I know they are good when running late for a meeting but I always say we will make a firm arrangement, like people used to!
I am making a point now though- some people get quite cross when you say you haven't got one- I enjoy that far too much to buy one now!

notso · 20/06/2010 22:07

DD is ten and says almost everyone in her class has one, I know of about five who don't. She does use an old one for when she goes on choir and athletics events to ring us when she needs collecting.
I have told her she can have one of her own when she can afford to top it up herself or when she starts going out and about on her own more or more accurately when her friends are allowed to go out and about more as DD is allowed but has no one to go with.

schroeder · 20/06/2010 22:17

My ds (11) hasn't got one, I've no idea about his classmates. I don't intend getting him one either.
I only have one now, since I learn't to drive; so I can ring the school to tell them I've broken down or ring the RAC.

Why does a 10 year old need a mobile phone???

So no my 10 year old doesn't have one. FGS what next!?

PosyPetrovaPauline · 20/06/2010 22:50

mrs ruffallo ( you do know me under different moniker we always agree ;) )

i am really impressed with you

Our three teens do not have them and we tend to know better than our friends do - where they are and when. Basically they are where they said they would be...

This is why we don't really want our children to have them

AnyFucker · 20/06/2010 22:51

My 10yo ds doesn't have a mobile phone

Marygoroundthebend · 20/06/2010 22:56

Hi I've got a 12 year old girl who doesn't have a mobile yet! She is in yr 7 and has never really wanted one tbh, but I think she shall be getting one this summer now she is starting to go out with her friends. It won't be a flashy one though, just one which does the job of letting us know where she is! DS is 91/2 and the only technology he cares about is knex! Keep them as kids I say

PosyPetrovaPauline · 20/06/2010 23:01

I agree Mary ( I have 6 btw!!!)
