DS maintains he is the only one in his year (5) without a mobile phone. Is this likely???

My 11 year old does not have one.
She might be given one when she starts secondary school but it will be one of my old phones, not a new one.

I am sure loads of her friends already have phones, but that doesn't mean she should have one. She doesn't go out alone (well she plays out the back) but thats it. When she is walking home from school without me, then she can have one.

Actually, I might give it to her over the summer holidays so she can get the novelty out of the way!

My DD (10 and year 5) doesn't have one, and won't till secondary school, when she'll get an old one.

Ds will be 11 in August. He uses my dh's old mobile phone. We gave it to him approx 2 months ago as the weather was getting better and he was starting to meet friends in the park for bmx riding, tennis etc. I just wanted to make sure he could call me should he need to and also that I could contact him. He is angling for a 'nicer' phone for his birthday. But for now, he can use dh's old one.

I was going to stick with the 'not until you start secondary school' rule but he is trying to become a bit more independent now so I gave in early for my peace of mind.

ds2 got one for his 11th birthday (last month), but he's not used it much.

His mates often don't have credit on their phones, or haven't got them switched on or charged. He's not got many mobile numbers from his friends at school.

ds1 (nearly 13) wants a "cool phone" as a must-have accessory. But he doesn't actually want/need a phone. He has a mobile, but never uses it.

I find it very frustrating.

DD is in yr 5 and soon to be 10. She doesn't have one. Maybe two or three kids in her class have one. She claims everyone has one except her but I'm pretty sure they don't.

Loshad · 19/06/2010 22:09

DS3 aged 12 has just got one, DS4 9.5 and in y4 is angling for one but not a chance - nor next year. He'll live.

Goblinchild · 19/06/2010 22:15

Mine both got one when they started secondary, cheapest sort for texting and phonecalls only,
They had them in school, turned off and in their bags. They only needed them out of school hours anyway, to keep in contact with me.
Around a third of the Y6 in my school have phones and hand them into the office.

Pattenburger · 19/06/2010 22:53

Ds got one for his 11th birthday. It is a cheap pay as you go. Was intending to hold out until secondary school, but as he started going out more and more on his own, it seemed sensible to get him one sooner.

Most of his friends have them, but only since being in year 6, in year 5 I would say most didn't.

Just13moreyearstogo · 19/06/2010 23:08

DS2 (10) doesn't - I don't think they need them till they're travelling/going out on their own, which tends to be when they go to secondary school.

Ingles2 · 19/06/2010 23:19

my ds is 10, yr 5 and would love an iphone. Not to talk he tells me, but for all the apps, internet etc
In his dreams!!!!!
when he goes to secondary school I'll buy him a cheap PAYG and not before.
I'd say half of his friends have a phone now.

lou33 · 19/06/2010 23:24

ds1 is 11 and will not be getting one until he starts yr 7 in sept, this is a rule i have had with dd1 (now 18) and dd2 (13), and will continue with ds2 who is 9

most of his friends do not have one either

My DD, 10, year 6, has one but started with our old ones, most her class have them (over 2/3 of them I would guess). She does go into town etc though and I like her to keep in touch if she is late etc.

flaime · 20/06/2010 16:05

My DD's friends are 8 (year 4) and have them but they are not allowed to go anywhere without their parents so never use them

Most other kids I know with them have parents who are divorced and use them to keep in touch with the parent they're not with.

Our kids will be offered ones when they go to high school but this will probably be for our peace of mind.

ladysybil · 20/06/2010 16:12

i have a teenager without a mobile phone. he has had two bought for him in the past. the first on his 11th birthday, but he keeps losing them, wont have them charged etc. so i refuse to get him a third, just to lose

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/06/2010 16:19

I dunno what my dd would do with a phone - she seems to have a phone phobia

serenity · 20/06/2010 16:28

DS2 (just turned 10, and in Yr5) doesn't have one, and won't be getting one until at least the start of Secondary school. DS1 got one then as he has a bus journey to school - he only uses it to call or text me that he's missed his bus/is running late or if he gets home and I'm not here (where are you? Can I play the PS3? every single time )

UnquietDad · 20/06/2010 16:35

Mine has her grandma's old one with no credit on, which she just uses to play games!
