Hiya,

I'm just interested. My dd is nearly 17 months and sleeps in a cot, which is fine at the mo.

Just wondered when you moved your dc into a bed from a cot, and how did it go?

2.5 years

if your DD isn't trying to climb out and is still happy in there i wouldn't be too worried

norksinmywaistband · 26/04/2010 14:50

DD 15 months as needed cot for DS
DS 16 months as he was climbing out

both settled well and after the first night exploration - being able to get up, they have stayed in bed as soon as put down

BlameItOnTheBogey · 26/04/2010 14:52

About 20 months old and we were lucky in that it went without a hitch. 4 months later, he still hasn't tried to get out of bed once he is put there....

DS was approx 2.5yrs

we had a single bed in the nursery as well as the cot and one night he said "sleep in the big bed" and has slept in it ever since.

addictedtolatte · 26/04/2010 14:57

14 months he wasnt climbing out but i wanted to get the transition out the way while he was still too young to understand change (the one thing children dont like ). he settled in with no problems if anything he slept better

Linziwam · 26/04/2010 15:02

Interesting!

She's getting a little big for her gro bags now, so instead of buying bigger ones we've decided to give her a duvet and pillow. didnt know whether to coincide it with moving into a bed ie:all new at once or gradually introduce the changes, letting her get used to one thing at a time. Still dont really know!
She's quite adaptable, so might just move her and see what happens. Can always go back i guess!

thanks for the comments everyone x

thats the attitude i took linziwam i never dismantled the cot i just covered it up so he never seen it. i wore him out all day by keeping him active and by the time bedtime came i dont think he cared where he slept. i expected all sorts of trouble but i never heard a peek out of him. i built something up in my head that never happened. good luck in what you decide to do

OTTMummA · 26/04/2010 20:03

DS was 15 months when he catapolted himself out of his cot, if he hadn't done that then probably around 2ish.
He hated his cot, not enough room dispite it being a cot bed type ( huge ), he moves around a lot in the night and was always waking up from banging his head on the bars :S, ever since hes been in a bed, hes slept all night through.

justallovertheplace · 26/04/2010 20:05

Dd was about 20 months iirc, and ds is 22 months and had been in a big bed for a week now. So far so good

greensnail · 26/04/2010 20:14

We moved DD at 15months (about a month ago) as we'll be needing the cot for DC2 soon. She's taken to the bed with no problems, but I found her curled up sleeping on the bedroom floor this morning which is the first time she's got herself out - hope she doesn't start to make a habit of it!

smokinaces · 26/04/2010 20:24

DS1 was the day before his 2nd birthday. We'd tried at 19m when DS2 arrived by section, but he was a nightmare so went back in a cot until his 2nd birthday.

DS2 was 22m, and has been a dream since the second he went in it.

thegirlwithsomethingextra · 26/04/2010 20:27

DD was 2.5.

Portofino · 26/04/2010 20:32

Dd did the catapult out in a temper thing at 20 months. We took the sides of the cot bed the next day. She rolled out occasionally but soon got the hang of it.

teaandcakeplease · 26/04/2010 20:34

My DD just after being age 2 catapulted herself out of her cot and hurt herself. At that point she was moved into a bed.

I think if she hadn't done that, I'd have kept her in it until she'd asked for a bed instead

The first few nights I kept having to return her to her bed over and over again, I did it without talking and then the novelty wore off.

My second child though is very spirited and I suspect moving him to a bed will be harder.

DS was 22 months as he was climbing out. I still find him on the floor every night!

flootshoot · 27/04/2010 09:39

DS is still in a cot at 14 months but he often ends up in our bed so I'm planning the transition when we move house. He can get down from the bed with no problem though (DH showed him how to turn round and lower himself fee first).

LarkinSky · 27/04/2010 10:30

Bloody hell, how does a child catapult itself out of a cot? My mind is boggling... I had no idea they could get out. Is this what I've got coming with dd (14months)?

Please describe how they do that!

Portofino · 27/04/2010 10:58

I never actually SAW dd do. She was in a very bad mood. I put her in the cot - and stood outside the closed bedroom door. She screamed blue murder, then suddenly there was a loud thump and it all went quiet. Queue mummy rushing in to find her stood next to the cot - looking quite pleased with herself. She stopped screaming though....

LarkinSky · 27/04/2010 11:00

Ha ha, that sounds quite funny, although I bet you were astounded at the time. Do you think she bounced on the mattress?

Bramshott · 27/04/2010 11:02

DD2 is 3.1 and we're just thinking of getting a bed as she's quite keen. She has been able to climb in and out of her cot fairly safely for quite a while.

lilmissmummy · 27/04/2010 11:04

I agree, when they started climbing out I moved them to beds (cant remember how old). Felt it was safer to fall from a bed that over the edge of a cot!

My little monkeys used to stand on a teddy and somehow climb up the side until level with the side and then slip over sideways. Luckily they didnt hurt themselves - scared the life out of me though!

APassionateWoman · 27/04/2010 11:04

Oldest was 2.5 yrs old. Youngest is 18mths and no plans to move her yet.

omnishambles · 27/04/2010 11:05

We did it last night with dd 23months - almost by mistake but will have to stick with it now - theres a bed and a cot in her room and she just wouldnt go down in the cot and was pointing to the bed and so I let her sleep in it - no change from normal, still up at 5 [yawn].

Chunkamatic · 27/04/2010 11:06

DS1 pulls himself up using his upper body and hooks his leg over.. luckily he is too wimpy to dare letting go over the other side - so so far he is still in his cot (26mths). Although he has started playing "bed time" quite alot, making beds out of blankets and throws etc so I think it might be time to look in to a proper bed...

Bramshott · 27/04/2010 11:10

DD2 puts one foot on the mattress and hauls herself up over the side (I have stopped putting the drop side up since she could climb in and out). She does it very safely, but since she stopped wearing a nappy at night, it doesn't look very comfortable when she straddles the side before dropping in!!

DD1 used to climb out of her travel cot, and I still don't know how she managed that - there's nothing to put your foot on!

DH's cousin always likes to tell us that she was still in a cot at 6 because there were 5 kids in a 2-bedroomed house!
