Starting a new part time job this week (2 days a week one week and then 2 the next) and am on a massive guilt trip about abandoning dd (who is 2.8).
I have worked part time since dd was 3 months but have had last month off whilst waiting to start new job.

Please give me the positives for being a working mum before i nominate myself for "Crap mum of the year" award

I am a working mum. Sorry, I can't give you any 'advantages'. I wish I didn't have to do it.

expat - wish i didnt "have" to do it either but gotta pay the bills so i might as well as be doing something i enjoy. Still hate the stigma attached to working mums tho but i guess i'll just have to get over that.....................

Your dd is old enough to benefit from and enjoy 2 or 3 days in nursery so I wouldn't worry about that at all personally.

bobbybob · 18/07/2005 21:19

She gets to spend lots of time with her Grandparents, mix with other children at nursery and get her mum all to herself for the other days in the week. Sounds lovely.

mandymoo · 18/07/2005 21:21

aww Bobbynob - thanks for your nice words - when you put it like that it makes me feel happier about returning to work. You've put a smile on my face - see??!!! XX

Your children see that it's possible to do different things with your life and that there are choices - even if the choice isn't one you really wanted to make...

You get time to be a grown up with other grown ups
and use different parts of your brain

Money (we couldn't afford a house if we didn't both work, so to me that's a good thing about being a working mum!)

sansouci · 18/07/2005 21:33

having more money, being able to buy something & not have to account to anyone for it, having a life away from home... at 2 days per week, i wouldn't feel at all guilty, mandymoo!

mandymoo · 18/07/2005 21:39

AWWWW thanks for all your positive messages - really does make a difference. You're right - 2 days a week is not the end of the world. Just needed to put it into perspective

KatieRocket, I have to do around 800 words about wolves in Bulgaria. Fancy a swop?

Benefits of part time work:

Talking to adults
Feeling part of society
Avoiding toddler groups and yummy mummies
Appreciating your children more beacuse you get a break from them.
Oh, and money. (Unless you're self employed, in which case who knows if you'll earn anything from one week to the next?)

Coming home from work and being jumped on!

When you go to work you feel lucky to have a break from the kids, when you are not working you feel lucky to be at home! Win Win sitch really

milward · 18/07/2005 23:56

cash, pension and coffee breaks

GillLevey · 21/07/2005 18:55

dd is 4 months and I can't wait to go back to work. I love her to bits but I really need some time to myself and I get so bored watching day time tv. I have nothing to talk to my husband about when he gets in from work except what happened on This Morning and I really miss doing things other than feeding baby and doing housework.

brodiesmummy · 21/07/2005 19:08

The best bit about going to work ,apart from time to go to the loo, a cup of tea in the morning etc is the look on your baby's face when you walk through the door and as far as they are concerned you are the best thing since sliced bread.Been back at work for two weeks, had a bit of a wobbly after week one but getting there!

aloha · 21/07/2005 19:11

kr - there was an hilarious freelancer's virtual xmas party on mn last year. I think Motherinferior got drunk, had a snog with herself and couldn;t face herself the next day

all these posts are fab.
Mandymoo -your work life balance thingy sounds great.

spidermama · 21/07/2005 19:13

You don't have to clean up poo (unless that's your job).

paolosgirl · 21/07/2005 19:29

No-one stands outside the loo when you're in asking "are you doing a poo or a wee?"

No-one says to you when you're eating a chocolate biscuit "can I have a bit?"

You come home to a house that isn't strewn with toys cos you've all been out all day

You've earned YOUR money, and you buy dh presents from that and not the money he's bought home

Your CV and your skills are kept up to date

I could go on and on and on...

mandymoo · 21/07/2005 19:51

Started my job this week but not feeling like a very good mum at the moment - have already started 2 threads on this subject under going back to work and depression!! DD has ignored me each time i've come home

DOnt feel like there are any advantages at the moment tbh
