what do you call the, you know, girly bits?

This might have been discussed before - if so, please just point me there.

I have a 2yr old dd and don't know what to call her genitals when I'm talking to her. Vulva? Wee-wee? I name the other parts of her body and just kind of skip over that part in silence. I feel I should do better.

Frankly, I don't even have a word for my own nether regions. I think my own mother probably did the skipping-over-in-silence thing.

Any thoughts?

I was told minnie as a child my ds calls it a front bum(I swear I didn't teach him that).
But a friend of mine called it a poppy so I will go with either of those(not the front bum of course).

slushy06 · 02/12/2009 17:55

I have heard it called it a Mary or a flower so pick which one sounds nicest I guess.

madmissy · 02/12/2009 17:56

We call it Lu-Lu thats what i grew up with lol

We have always had an issue with this here too. My sister and I called it a wee-wee when we were little, but I have 3 boys and that doesn't seem right now. We call their bits their Winkies at first, then Willies when a bit older. Somehow Penis is too grown up.

By the same token i wouldn't refer to a girls Fanny, Vagina or, um, Pussy .

I have called it a Twinkle up till now, but will watch with interest what the general consensus is.

badietbuddy · 02/12/2009 18:08

What's wrong with vulva? I hate these twee names, Twinkle and flower fgs?!

madmissy · 02/12/2009 18:11

vulva? i know thats what it is but sounds so erm.. not right!

just like i wouldn't use penis for a boy

pinkmagic1 · 02/12/2009 18:12

I asked the same question on here a while back. The proper words like vagina or vulva just sound horrid dont they? I wish there was a female equivalent of 'willy'. My DD now just refers to them as her 'bits'!

badietbuddy · 02/12/2009 18:13

It's just so sad that people seem to have such an issue with their own bits. Why is it still such a taboo to call it what it is??

slushy06 · 02/12/2009 19:00

I have no problem with my bits badiet I actually call mine a fanny or vagina but it does not seem right to use a grown up word when describing a pre pubescent girls bits as they are not the same as ours they are closed neater and hairless and overall more tidy if you ask me so I guess I like a more tidy name.

badietbuddy · 02/12/2009 19:08

Seriously? And you say you have no issue with your bits?

teameric · 02/12/2009 19:11

noonie, I've always called mine that. Vulva is a nasty word and so clinical.

BikeRunSki · 02/12/2009 19:13

Wilma! Girls version of Willie of course!

RainRainGoAway · 02/12/2009 19:14

Fanny. I have no problem with it.

I think vulva is appaling and not anatomically correct anyway as it only refers to the 'leaves' of the vagina.

As Germaine Greer once pointed out, the only word which actually means all the bits is, ahem, cunt.
But I won't be using it though with dd.

teameric · 02/12/2009 19:15

Loving Wilma! might have to rename mine!

slushy06 · 02/12/2009 19:23

No problem with my bits at all they simply are I do however have a problem with my little girl having bits and I guess the thought that one day they will be used to have sex for whichever scumbag claims my daughter as his wife Never mind I sure it wont mentally scar her to not call it a vulva and is not really important in the grand scheme of things. But it is easier with my ds he just calls it a willy.

biglips · 02/12/2009 19:25

my dd1 calls her back - bum and front - bum bum...she chose those names when she was about 2 and still does at age 5

JollyBear · 02/12/2009 20:26

I thought vulva referred to the whole area or at least it refers to the visible area. DH and I have debated what to call DD's bits and somehow have settled on vulvie. Less clinical than vulva we thought.

She isn't 1 yet so perhaps she will decide to call it something else.

NicknameTaken · 03/12/2009 10:03

Thanks for the responses. Badietbuddy, part of me thinks I should avoid coyness and just say vulva, but it doesn't come naturally and I don't want my awkwardness to come across.

Twinkle I like but will change the meaning of "Twinkle twinkle little star" every time we sing it (how I wonder what you are indeed).

Wilma has too much personality for me.

Vulvie or lulu might work.

Tuppence is what my friend uses. Another friend is shocked by my use of fanny, but I find the term front bottom doesn't seem right!

onebatmother · 03/12/2009 10:20

I say fan-fan, having been cowed into submission by screechign hordes of MNers who were very cat's bum about me calling it fanny.

Not to mention the OUTRAGE when I wondered why we didn't use 'cock' for an older boy. I though was quite a cheerful and well, 'cocky' word for a boy's penis. Not .. any ... more.

onebatmother · 03/12/2009 17:03

it does make me sound a bit mad, on reflection

becktay · 03/12/2009 21:45

we call my son's willy or penis, for a girl i'd probably just call it wee hole!

Reesie · 03/12/2009 22:30

We have 2 dd's in our house and we call them 'bits'. DH calls them your 'bits and bobs'. DD1 always laughs when 'bits and bobs' are on cbeebies!

SofaQueen · 03/12/2009 22:41

Vulva is the correct terminology, and refers to the whole external area.

Vagina is actually the internal passageway up to the cervix.

The "leaves" are actually divided into the labia majora and labia minora.

WickedWitchSouthWest · 03/12/2009 22:48

oh... we've gone with front bum. dd is 3.5 and it makes sense to her, seeing as it does look like a front bum Wish I'd thought of tuppence though!

My mum's no help she grew up with brothers so she's always called female bits a willy. Me and my sister were a tad confused for a while
