have to take DS1 to his induction afternoon (2nd one - hoping he doesn't throw up like he did last week LOL) at his new school.........thing is DS2 has his sleep at 1pm-3pm - and the induction afternoon starts at 1.30

So I'm going to put DS2 down for his sleep as usual, at 1.30 on the dot grab the monitor, lock the front door and whizz round to the school to drop DS1 off - then whizz back again

sorry QofQ - I just know that when something 'should' take me 1 min - something happens to make it take 20!! then there is absolutely stress to rush you??

Er exactly charleepeters!! It's illegal - the point I was making. Not well enough, obviously

jessicasmummy · 21/06/2005 11:45

not illegal to leave a child home alone.... yeah right.

charleepeters · 21/06/2005 11:46

i was always told its illegal to leave children with out a responsible person taking care of them - dont worry im not sying your a horrible mom or anything its just what i was told at collage. like i said its up to you there your kids.

Lonelymum · 21/06/2005 11:47

I have done this before QofQ - picked up dd from nursery leaving ds3 asleep in cot. If you can do it in less than five minutes, I can understand why you would do it, but I suppose a lot of people will think badly of me for saying so.

MrsDoolittle · 21/06/2005 11:47

"because it's the first time I'll be doing it

Come september it'll be normal...... "

And we got out of the wrong side of the bed this morning?
Think you should go back to bed!

WigWamBam · 21/06/2005 11:47

QOQ, why did you post if you didn't want people to comment on what you were posting? You knew that people wouldn't ignore a posting like this.

Why would you post just to cause an argument again?

edodgy · 21/06/2005 11:47

i wouldnt do it i always think the worst like what if something happened to you on your short journey? your son would be in the house alone for longer then and even if he's ok you'd be in big trouble.

QueenOfQuotes · 21/06/2005 11:48

tracy - there is abosultey NO reason it will take more than 2 minutes to drop him there - shorter time than it would take me to put washing on the line.

For those of you who don't realise 'how' close my home is too the school......if I get of my chair now, and look out of the window - I can watch the reception class playing in their classroom, the wall on the side of this room (which is an outside wall) is also the school wall.

It is HONESTLY further that to the end of my garden from where I'm sitting now (and it's only a little garden as there's another wall which is also the school wall at the end - we're 'nestled' around teh school grounds) to the front door of the school.

i just could not think of any reason ever to leave my child alone in the house....my mum used ot leave me in charge of my sisters from age of nine so they were 1 and 3 and that is completely irresponsible.

elsmommy · 21/06/2005 11:49

TBH I can't see the harm if its that close

MrsDoolittle · 21/06/2005 11:49

Very good point egodgy.
QofQ - you are making the huge assumption that you are not going to be waylaid for any reason.

Caligula · 21/06/2005 11:49

No it's not illegal.

It's illegal if the child comes to harm, but if it doesn't, it's not illegal.

Do people think it's illegal for her to go down to the end of the garden as well?

Lor. This weather.

Lizzylou · 21/06/2005 11:50

Oh dear I guess you all got out of bed the wrong side this morning

Why, because we disagree with you??? Heaven forbid!
You posted this to get a rise .....et voila!

Personally I wouldn't do it, but if I did and was bothered what others thought I wouldn't post about it either!

oliveoil · 21/06/2005 11:50

Delay nap or put in pushchair.

What if he is upset at the school? You can't just dump him and run off waving your monitor at the teachers! They would think you were mad.

Lonelymum · 21/06/2005 11:50

I leave my children asleep in the cot to put the washing out or mow the lawn. When the mower is on, I wouldn't be able to hear the baby if he woke up crying (which he never has done in 2.4 years). Is that wrong too? As I understand it, QofQ lives next door to the school. She could leave the window open and hear her baby I think.

QueenOfQuotes · 21/06/2005 11:50

"i just could not think of any reason ever to leave my child alone in the house...."

Ooops - I'd better enjoying this lovely weather while he's asleep - wouldn't want to be 'outside' the house while he's inside [frown]

OP posts:
charleepeters · 21/06/2005 11:52

sorry i was wrong its not illegal but this is a quote from the nspcc web site

Never leave a baby or very young child alone at home, whether asleep or awake, even for a few minutes. It doesn?t take long for unsupervised young children or babies to injure themselves.

Lonelymum · 21/06/2005 11:52

I also have left my children to wander across the road to speak to a neighbour in her front garden. Is that wrong?

Nemo1977 · 21/06/2005 11:52

queen no i dont leave my son in the house while i run to the neighbours or anywhere else..he comes with me. If i was in the garden when he was younger then yes I would take monitor with me...sorry if i care for what happens to him but i thought being a parent was about being responsible...silly me!

WigWamBam · 21/06/2005 11:53

I'm always being delayed on my way back from nursery. Someone stops to chat, someone stops to ask directions, someone last week stopped to ask me out(!), a couple of weeks ago, I stopped to help an elderly lady who had fallen and there was no-one else to help her ... you can't tell what's going to happen. Why would it harm ds2 to have the time of his nap altered?

And what point is there in taking the monitor anyway? If ds2 screams while you're dropping ds1 off, what can you do about it?

sandyballs · 21/06/2005 11:54

I don't see the problem with this - the school sounds so close to you. What on earth could happen to him in such a short time. I do sometimes think our generation of mothers have got very very nervous and over-protective. Chill a bit more.

starlover · 21/06/2005 11:54

sorry... so... no-one on this thread would leave their child inside sleeping while they put the bins out? or hung the washing out? or anything else?

i find that kind of hard to believe.

(QoQ.. i wonder if this would have got a different reaction if you had posted with your old name?)
