JennyPenny22 · 01/09/2009 10:55

Anybody know how I can check what the shipping cost is from China? Babybots might know? The nappies I was going to buy yesterday - the man is asking $300 to ship 200 nappies?? Is it really that expensive?

Jenny - Unfortunately it is that expensive, china is a long way for them to come, for a batch of 200 they would use air freight to ship them which is more expensive then by sea, but it is quicker (about 10 days).

You have to be really careful though as the import duty if any will also be calculated using your shipping charges and not just the total of the cost of the goods.

Also the fact that you are paying in dollars will make pricing your products more difficult due to fluctuations in the exchange rate as something that may cost you for example £300 this week may cost £350 next week, but on the plus side may only cost you £250 depending on the way it goes.

Keeping my coolababy at the price I sell them has been very difficult at times.

If you need any more info just drop me an email.

Babybots · 01/09/2009 11:27

Jenny - Forgot to mention, customs are very hot on goods from China because of the number of counterfit products that are sent, they tend to check almost everything.

BaronConker · 01/09/2009 11:33

tree - are you ever going to run out of fluffles?!! They are definitely breeding.

myjobismum - so impressed that your mum is impressed with your fluff! I show my gorgeous new nappies to my mum and she chuckles to herself in a 'don't see what was wrong with good old terries' kind of way. v annoying. I once actually asked her if she didn't think the modern fleece pockets were much better than terries and pins, and she said she didn't! she reckons my pockets are bulky and that her old nappies were all trim and neat! bo**ocks.

JennyPenny22 · 01/09/2009 11:43

Baron - My mum is very like that. Although I prefer it to my MIL who just wants to use disposables. We hardly see her, but when we do - you can garantee she will try and sneak a disposable onto DD

I think tree should open her own fluffles shop!

JennyPenny22 · 01/09/2009 11:45

Babybots - thanks for that. It is all so much more complicated than I first thought! Do you end up with a very large customs bill on the coolababy? I have coolababys on the way and hoping I don't end up with a massive bill.

My goods have also been shipped from america and should get them in the next few days!

OP posts:
Babybots · 01/09/2009 11:51

Jenny - So far not had one, have been very lucky, the man I spoke to at parcelforce onetime was shocked that I hadn't had anything opened as yet.

It is all complicated, but very rewarding, how is the site building going? I am in the process of giving mine a makeover and it has taken over my life at the moment!!

sophietom · 01/09/2009 12:05

hello everyone- not been on MN for ages so just dropped in to see whats new in the cloth nappy world!
Looks like upsy daisy are going to be very busy
I ordered a huckleberry gelato with swallow embroidery and a choc brown nappy. I had some wraps off them recently (after a recommendation from one of you) and they are fab. DS looks so cute in his black minkee wrap with skull and crossbones on the back teamed with red and black babylegs and a pirate t-shirt!!!
at creepycrawlies in nappies DS needs changing but am scared at what may be lurking in the nappy stash

JennyPenny22 · 01/09/2009 12:13

Well mine would have been done by now if Elouise hadn't started teething and Talia hadn't started being a PITA to get to sleep! The kids have taken over my evenings so I haven't had much time to get it done. I am hoping to open it next week BUT I am going on holiday for a week on 18th! And I don't have any actual nappies arrived yet! lol. I am findint that it isn't difficult, but it is very time consuming.

Once I have got all my stock in - I can start getting some local events and stalls.

The is a local market to us but it is about £25 a stall I think and I can't see me making enough profit to cover it? It is once a month.

I don't know if I should give up on these other nappies or not. They are going to cost about the same as the coolababys but I haven't yet tested them which is what is making me very wary. They can send me a tester if I cover costs but the price will have gone up before I recieve it as it is a special offer at the moment.

OP posts:
Babybots · 01/09/2009 12:37

I spend time on the site once Zach has gone down for the evening, I code all of mine from scratch which probably adds to the complexity, I find wysiwyg editors very restrictive especially the free ones.

The stall thing sounds like a really good idea in theory, the practicality of it though may not be as good, like you say the outlay may not be covered by any profit, I have been contemplating a bricks and mortar type of affair but unless there is a huge market for the product in the area its not likely to work. Most people including myself seem to have accepted the fact that the only place you can really get cloth is online, which is a shame as that leaves the sposies with their grasp on the mainstream market.

Are the other nappies a bit like a Fuzzi? getting a sample from manufacturers is like getting blood from a stone. My advice would be to go with your gut feeling, If you think they will sell then go for it, but only commit to small qty's until the market for them has built up.

Take the coolababy, nobody stocked them, and I took a gamble which has paid off.

If you are wary then dont do it, buying them wholesale is alot like buying a BTP kit, you should really try some before you commit to a load.

Octothechildherder · 01/09/2009 12:42

Customs on goods from USA get me every time! It can be very expensive - need to make sure you budget for it in retail price. Also make sure your goods are insured during shipment.

Goods coming in from China are strictly regulated as there is a limit as to how much is allowed to be imported to UK - there is a threshold which when reached all imports grind to a halt!

I am working with USD aswell and buy when in more when the exchange rate is good.

Have been looking at my next product today too - tricky business! I would get a sample and test it before you buy in bulk!!

No fluffy post here!

4andnotout · 01/09/2009 12:44

I got your post octo Thank you!!

Octothechildherder · 01/09/2009 12:45

JennyPenny22 · 01/09/2009 14:26

I think fushia is my favourite itti. I am really sad they don't work for Talia . Will be very sad well they are all sold. Elouise has a Fushia I am keeping though.

I am off to the bank in a bit when the kids wake up to try and sort out my paypal account so I can get this stock ordered!

4andnotout · 01/09/2009 14:29

I found it under the dining table wrapped in a sleeping bag My fave is the pink polka itti's i heart them!

reallywoundup · 01/09/2009 14:52

just been doing a bit of price comparison- tots 'Potion' works out at 40p per wash does it coat the nappies in a fine layer of platinum?

JennyPenny22 · 01/09/2009 15:42

really - that is the reason I would never buy it! Lol. If there was a cheap alterative then I would buy it. It would have to work out at least AS cheap as normal detergent for me. But I am stingy!

OP posts:
newspaperdelivery · 01/09/2009 16:01

Glad you feel the totsbots are worth more. Fab!

Veeeery glad to be back in proper nappies too. Sigh.

All this talk of trade makes me realise how complicated it is! Blimey!
Was asked if interested in being a nappy advisor at the festical, there was a real nappy display there. Dunno really. I'd be too and if I met with people who didn't 'get' it!

Hello reallywoundup - I'd pay 40p per wash if it dried them, stuffed them and put them away neatly [in rainbow colour coordinated styleee]

You will all be impressed to hear the rainbow stash has been maintained. They are all neatly folded and sorted. I love em.

Very excited about UD arriving at some point. How long do you reckon Jenny? [resident ud expert]

If you lot go chat about work elsewhere - you better not forget us for nappy gossip

Could you have a thread on mn?

BaronConker · 01/09/2009 16:25

Phew! - me and the DSs just got caught in the most humungous thunderstorm! Am trying to fit in lots of fun activities as tomorrow is last day of holidays, so today we have visited one country-style park for spotting deer and climbing rocks, and one town-style park for swinging on swings, scaling climbing walls and playing in sandpits. Luckily we'd had a good long play before the clouds rolled in. We stuck DS3 in the buggy and pegged it back to the car. I was the only one who got soaked as the boys piled into the car just before it started coming down, but I still had to lean in to strap in DS2 and 3 and then fold the buggy and get it into the boot. Am DRENCHED!

reallywoundup - have also had fun uniform checking. Also got out winter coats and made them try them on - maybe a bit premature!
