Is a 2.8 - 3 year old too young for a scooter?

DS (nearly 28 months) always looks with envy at other little boys and girls on scooters. We were thinking of getting him one as his next big present - which will be either this Christmas or his birthday next year. At Christmas he will be 2.8 and on his birthday he will be three.
Are either of these ages too young for one? What is the most suitable age?

Our dd got one for Xmas when she was 2.5 and struggled a bit but could (sort of!) use it. By 3 she was pretty good. Kids appear to find the ones with two wheels at the front easier I think (DDs doesn't and that was the balance issue.) IME boys are sometimes slightly ahead of girls with physical developments like this, so you may find he is fine.

dd was 3 in may. she had a scooter from about 2.5. she does fine, and it's only a 2 wheeler. most preschoolers seem to have 3 wheelers.

No fine. We had a microscooter from 2 and it's been easy. They do go horribly fast though.

we have a 2 wheeler and 3 wheeler 3 wheeler is more stable so maybe go for that one first

dd had a 2 wheeler from 2.5 and had no problems with it at all. I think they are great.

We've just got a balance bike for our 2.7 yo ds2, and he's fine on that, so I think you'd be OK. However, he does have a tendency to hurtle down hills towards rivers at an alarming rate. Knows no fear. It is not good for my nerves but he adores it.

Its fine as long as you are agile and fast. Tis a nightmare having to jump and grab them before they hurtle into the road. The get very fast before they get any sense!

both mine had 2 wheeler from about that age and were fine. also they are very fast!!! get yourself a pair of good trainers and have fun!

DD had one the Christmas before her 3rd birthday, it has two wheels at front and back (doubled up like buggy wheels) and she was fine

If his balance isnt great, the micro scooters with the angled wheels are sturdier but in the end i didnt bother spending the extra £££

DS1 got one at that age- 2.8 months - and fell over and refused to use it for months. Then at around 3.3 he suddenly wanted to use it again and now loves it and scooters everywhere! I'd definitely recommend a helmet though (as DS1 hit his head when he fell and refused to go back on for months - I suspect if he had a helmet on he'd have been quicker back on the scooter) if they're a bit accident prone.

Think the micro scooters are great for the younger ones, have seen some really little ones on them! Agree thought they do go fast! Think the micro scooters are worth the extra money.

Mini micro here from 2nd birthday and loves it. Agree they do go fast and ds only stops by scooting into things. The brake is very tricky though.

Princesslina and qumps, can you possibly please provide a link to the micro scooters your LOs have or even tell me the names?
Have been looking at one on web but it says it's only suitable for three years and up; or is this only a guide?

Mini micros are sold at john lewis - blue or pink only (they have 2 wheels ar ront and one at back)- is the one we got DS1 too.

Get yourself a full-sized microscooter at the same time - they are fun.

Foldable lightweight scooter definitely good idea as easy to carry if you get to a rough or steep place.

Note however - if you want a scooter that can be used in the garden then microscooter won't do, it needs to have larger wheels to cope with grass (DD has both - the big size ones since she was 5-6 and at 10 she still uses them - good investment).

ds3 is 2.4 and easily rides on his sister's micro scooter, he fair pelts along.

Ds has been scooting around on his micro scooter since he was 20 months. He kept pinching them from children in the park and he quickly sussed it, so we relented and bought him one... he loves it, goes everywhere on it, though I have developed a fishwife type yell to get him to stop at the next road junction. He's getting pretty good, 90% of the time if I yell he'll stop and come back... it's really quite rare for him to keep going across the road.

Mini micro now sell lots of other colours on the website, just bought a green deck for DS2 (2yo). He scoots really well on it already and has only had it 2 weeks (but has been using DS1's for a while)

My dgs had a mini micro scooter from age 2.6 and used it properly really quickly as he had tried them at friends'houses however even better is the running/balance bike which is an incredible toy.

Balance bikes are not as easy to throw on the buggy when DC's get tired though - I can hook 2 mini micro scooters on the handle bar of my P&T.

Agree. One of the best things about the mini micro is being able to hook it on the p&t.
And that it takes my weight-just!
