DS2 admitted to hospital tonight. I've left him there overnight with DH. Feeling pangs of guilt.

He's 2 and has been limping for 3 days.
Also was a bit coldy at the weekend.
They've done xrays tonight and are taking blood tonight to check he doesn't have septic arthritis.
They expect it will be an 'irritable hip' instead but are just making sure.

I work full time, DH is stay at home dad. This is the first time it's not been me to do the overnight hospital stay. Really can't face all the angst and hanging around and being couped up trying to entertain a sick child. The holding them tight so they can have blood taken. Really, it's his turn, but I'm home alone now, DS1 is staying at my sisters and I'm sat here hoping it's ok that I've come home.

Should go to bed really.

What's wrong with him?

They will be fine. He's with his dad. Parenting is a partnership, you have to let him help. It's really hard though isn't it.

I hope he's feeling better very soon. The staff will look after him.

I've finally cried, been holding it together all evening. Well, if you count getting ratty at people taking so fecking long to do everything, holding it together.

I bloody hate hospitals. Good job i didn't spend all day working in one too. Oh yes, that's right i did, and i'll be back at work in the hospital in the morning. I obviously love them.

I work in a hospital aswell. It's horrible when it's your child though.

I'm sure they will be fine. Don't feel guilty. Hope he is recovering well and home soon.

DH is perfectly capable and can comfort him just as well if not more than i can. They are very close, especially since the role change. It feels right that it should be him to stay.

Just wish he didn't have to stay at all.

Smasher, I'm so sorry to hear this, how awful and painful and worrying for you. You say it's not your first o/night hosp visit for your kids - has DS2 been in before, then? Same thing?

When are you expecting results?

DS2 was in for D&V and on the verge of dehydration sometime this year already. He's quite underweight usually, and they keep taking blood, he's plumped up a bit recently though, so hopefully won't have all that hassle this time.

He's also had lots of tests as a newborn and lots of days in hospital for jaundice, which turned out to resolve itself. (bloody HV's)

DS1 couldn't bloody keep out of the place for his first 2 years with Group B Strep Pneumonia (nearly died at 2 days old), Bronchiolits, Night Terrors/Parasomnia.

Plonkers, both of them.

OMG you really have been through it. I'm sure it doesn't get any easier with time, either.

Poor you with all the hospital visits, have only been once with each boy, but that was enough, it's horrible.

I'm sure it'll turn out to be a case of take a few calpol and he'll be fine, and I wouldn't have even taken him to the GP with the limp.
It was a case of the GP coming to us (family) and so hopefully this is all just over-zealous precautions.

I'm glad that last night DS2 appeared to be quite enjoying himself. Think he thought he was in a travelodge, and he loves that.

DH really is the best person to do it. I get too impatient that we always end up last on any ward round. Can't stand all the hanging around.

Although admittedly being the person at home with no information isn't exactly great either. There's the 'what if's' here.

I think it'll be lunchtime before they get seen by the orthopaedic consultant who will want a second opinion from paediatrics. They may even do another xray in another position. And they'll have to wait for the blood test results to come back.

It could be a long day. I have the car so will have to go and collect them. Thankfully my sister is going to keep DS1 for the day. At last we have family support around for these sort of things. (we moved 500 miles last month)

Do you think my new work colleagues are going to think i'm some sort of robo-mum for just going to work today and getting on with it? Like not bothered? It's a bit odd no?
