DS1: 6yo, 7.30
DS2: 15m, 6.30pm.

Do any of you have children who get up early and go downstairs to watch TV/play? DS1 has done this since he was about 4 and I really want to stop it, as I'm sure sometimes he's getting up at 5.45am and watching almost 2 hours of TV before I wake up at 7.30! What shall I do? Just get up at 6am myself and spend that time with him, or turn TV off at wall...? I tried the alarm clock that tellds him when to get up... he still just got up as soon as he woke up.

Sorry for hijack

Maveta · 16/06/2009 16:10

ds 2.2 goes down between 8.30pm-9.30pm. He used to go down about 7pm but was waking at 5am and we couldn't do that anymore. He sleeps the same amount of hours now and wakes up about 7am which is much more doable. He still has a 2 hour nap.

I wouldn't want it to be any later for my own sanity, as it is we are at the furthest margin of acceptable for me for a kid his age! But it's a trade off to get me a couple more hours sleep in the morning and one that is well worth it!

Here in spain it is still a relatively early bedtime and I know many many people who are surprised to hear he goes to bed 'that early'. My nieces and nephews are often up until their parents go to bed about 11pm/12am.

DS: 21 months, in bed by 7.15pm. He is the king of the Time-Wasting Olympics but once he's in, he loves it.

DD aged 7; about 8pm.

I think bed time should depend on how much sleep your DC need. 11-12 hours is optimum but not all children actually need that and some might need a bit more.

So if you all have to be up and about by a certain time the DCs will need to be in bed by a certain time to get what they, personally, need.

A bit of trial and error to work out what your DC need. Then, of course, by the time you've worked it out and got a routine they've got a bit older and want to stay up half an hour later.

lostinthecitylover · 16/06/2009 16:25

I can understand earlier bedtimes if you SAHM but I have always worked and so never actually arrived home until 6.30/6.45 pm with dcs, after picking them up from cm or nursery at 6pm.

So we have always had later bedtimes. But also get up later. Could have not tolerated 5.30/6.30 risers.

And as Maveta says it's a cultural or Northern Europe thing - in Spain dcs stay up later.

But basically do what works for you.

Also as they get older they tend to do activities which can start at 7pm eg brownies, football

emmabemmasmom · 16/06/2009 16:31

DD 19 months is in bed at 6:30(ish). I would also like this to be later but at 6:15 (don't know how she knows) she starts to strip off and try to go into the bathroom and climb in the bath! She was waking at 6am which is why i wanted to make her bedtime maybe 7 but now she sleeps until 7:30 or 8am so I am happy. I feel that she will sleep the amount she needs so I just let her go with her own schedule instead of trying to alter it. But if she were staying up till 11pm or waking at 5am then yes, I would do everything I could to start a more decient rutine as kids need a lot of sleep (even if they don't think they do!)

She also only has one nap during the day which ranges from 1.5-3 hours depending on what she wants. Today was 3 hours and I just left her as she must have needed it. Again with naps, she will find her blanket and pull me into her room by her bed!

LovelyRitaMeterMaid · 16/06/2009 16:32

DS and DD are 5.7 and 3.9. They are in bed by about 8pm although sometimes later if DS has a later club.

Lizzylou · 16/06/2009 16:33

DS's are 5 and 3 and are both in bed at 7pm, get up between 6.20-7am
On a Saturday DS1 often stays up a little later but they never get up any later (grrr)

pagwatch · 16/06/2009 16:36

Average night is
DS1 nearly 16 - 10.00ish
DS2 12yrs - 9.00
DD 6 yrs - 7.00

posieparker · 16/06/2009 16:38

dcs 6 & 7, in bed by 7pm lights out at 7.30
dc 2.75 bed and lights out at 6.30-45
dc 7mths 6.15-25 fed and bed.

PinkTulips · 16/06/2009 16:43

4 and almost 3; techinically 7.30 but usualy closer to 8/8.30 and they won't go to sleep before 9 or 10 most nights when it's bright

the baby stays downstairs with us, not going to bother trying to get him into an evening routine til closer to a year old as ime it's a waste of time and soul destroying spending half my evening up in the room trying to settle a fractious baby

Biglips · 16/06/2009 16:46

my 4.8 yrs old goes to bed @ 6.30pm...she doesnt get to sleep till 7-8pm and wakes up @ 6.30 - 7am. my 8 months old is usually in bed by 9pm and wakes up @ 7am.

smallchange · 16/06/2009 16:53

Ds (2.7) is in bed around 8.30pm as on the days I work it would be difficult and no fun at all to get him fed bathed and in bed any earlier. It keeps him to a routine for him to have the same bedtime every night. He wakes up 7.30-8 and luckily this is enough time (just about) for us to get ready to go out in the mornings.

I think he?s inherited my sleep habits though. We can often hear him chatting away to himself well past 9pm and my mum says I was exactly the same, but she put me to bed at 6pm so I was spending the whole evening awake lying in my cot ? perfectly happily apparently though.

MagNacarta · 16/06/2009 16:58

dd1 - almost 10 yrs - 8.30pm
dd2 - 7 - 8pm
ds - 6 - 7.30pm

Weekends however is a bit of a freeforall - often as late as 10pm.

ilovespinach · 16/06/2009 17:01

ds1 3.2 and ds2 17 months 7. They run around like crazy during the day and are shattered at 7. The downside is they get up between 6/7 am.

EyeballsandherSunburntNorks · 16/06/2009 17:10

DD 17 months won't go to bed before 9pm and sometimes later. Wakes again at 1am for a couple of hours then again at 6.30ish

They never told me it would be like this

MarthaFarquhar · 16/06/2009 17:13

DD is 2.2 and sleeps 7.30pm - 6.30am. I would rather 8.30pm - 7.30am but she's having none of it. I really do think most DC find the pattern that suits them best.

lizziemun · 16/06/2009 17:55

ds 12wks between 6 - 6.30pm
dd2 22mths 6 - 6.30pm after ITNG
dd1 5.5yrs 6 - 7pm. Her teacher told the class they had to be in bed 6.30pm so they were well rested for school.

Skimty · 16/06/2009 20:26

DD (8mo) and DS (2.8) in bed and asleep between 7.15-7.45. Both sleep around eleven hours (with usually one or two wake ups each in between!)

I was convinced that all children needed a six o'clock bedtime and a daytime nap until they were three etc. until I go given two children who really don't need as much sleep as that. DS hasn't napped for about a year and DD has between 1 hour and 1 and half hour nap during the day. (Spread over two naps)

Trying to extend their naps/sleep time has proven pointless...ho hum

AnarchyAunt · 16/06/2009 20:37

DD (6) in bed for 6.30 on weeknights, sleeps til around 7.

Weekends she goes whenever she seems to need it - as she has got older she's started to sleep later to compensate.

She's always had an early bedtime, as a single mum I find I really need the evenings to myself. Even though we are away visiting friends/travelling a lot, there's always a corner or comfy chair to snuggle her up in with her special blanket.

ilovesprouts · 16/06/2009 20:42

ds 2.6 goes to bed at 9pm but is still awake wen we go to bed as dh puts dvd on for him

Jaquelinehyde · 16/06/2009 20:56

DD1 just turned 4 goes between 7 - 7.30

DS 3 and a half goes between 7 - 7.30

DD2 turning 2 next week goes between 6.30 - 7

All three are put to bed and get themselves off to sleep.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 16/06/2009 20:58

DD aged 3 anytime between 8 and 9, this has stopped her waking early or in the middle of the night.

DS age 1 goes to bed at 7.30 which seems to have stretched him to 6.30 mornings.

pigsinmud · 16/06/2009 20:59

3 & 5 year old dds - between 7 and 8

9 year old ds - about 9

11 year old ds - about 9:30

womma · 16/06/2009 21:09

DD is 9 mths, goes to bed at around 7.30, wakes up at 5ish...

Will only get a reasonable amount of daytime sleep if we stay at home all day too.
