Wonderstuff I sit with DS (17 months). Will do gradual withdrawal technique if it starts to become a problem, but we sat with DD and she now goes happily to bed by herself.
Out of the bath at 6.30, two books, teeth brushed, sit with him while he plays in his cot/watches his mobile and he drifts off very happily by 7. It has to go exactly like that to work though...

dd is 6 almost 7 and ds is 5. Both go up at 7.30pm and after stories it is 8pm when I retreat downstairs. However, I allow them to decide when they are tired and sleep accordingly (but they have to stay in their rooms), so sometimes dd can be heard 'pottering' around in her bedroom at 9 / 9.30 pm.

In the winter it's a whole different ball game. They need more sleep and crash as soon as the light goes off.

hazeyjane · 15/06/2009 22:58

dd's are 2 and 3.2 and go to bed between 6.30 and 7.

We always sit with them until they fall asleep (doesn't take very long, although sometimes I drop off at the same time)

I am always shocked by parents who keep their children up late, like the ones you mention in your OP.

Dds are 14 and 12 and bedtime is now 9.30 on a school night and tennish at the weekends.

We always left them in bed awake, from about eight months or so and would only go up and sit if there was a problem.

You have to just do what suits your DCs IMO.

I have:

3yo - goes between 8.30pm and 10pm to wake at 7am

1yo - goes between 8.30pm and 10pm, but sleeps for up to 1.5 hrs at lunchime.

Both the little buggers are in beds in our bedroom! DS (3) has the "marital" big bed all for himself , sometimes DH is in there with him and DD (1) is in a single bed with the cot used as a bedguard. TBH, it's the only thing the cot has ever been useful for - neither of them would sleep in it and I have no idea why. It is a nice cot!

Anyway, I lay in bed with each of them until they are asleep/drowsy enough not to mind me leaving.

I don't recommend taking any sleeping advice from me .

I am absolutely at some of your 3yos going at 7-7.15.

mejon · 16/06/2009 13:41

DD 2.10 now goes to bed at 8pm and is usually asleep pretty quickly. We knocked-on her bedtime by about 45 minutes recently as she was waking up at stupid o'clock in the morning but unfortunately it doesn't seem to have made much difference and I'm now too scared to move it back in case she gets up even earlier!

I have to sit with her and hold her 'han' (hand) until she drops off but this has only been happening for around 6 months or so. She dropped off by herself and slept until a reasonable time in the morning up until then.

nickytwotimes · 16/06/2009 13:46

3 yo next month goes at 7 or 7.30pm.
SOme little kids need 12 hours, some a bit less.
Some of my pals who are at work all day like to make bedtime a little later so they can have some decent family time.
Personally I couldn't stand a toddler still tearing about the place till 11pm though. I love my peaceful evenings. Not that I always get one.

Ewe · 16/06/2009 13:47

DD 15months - Always asleep by 7, has a little cuddle but goes down awake and then nods off.

Northumberlandlass · 16/06/2009 13:47

DS 5 - bath 6.30, sitting reading (with me) or watching Simpons (with DH) - bed 7.30, another story, lights out by 7.45. He will be asleep by 8.

Regardless of what time he goes to bed he is up before 6 !!

nickytwotimes · 16/06/2009 13:49

Oh, yes, we tried later bedtimes in the hope of a later start, but it never worked.

Haylstones · 16/06/2009 13:50

5.5 yrold and 16 mo both in bed at 7 (younger one often earlier). %yo asleep by 7.15-7.30 after story, teeth brush etc

Ewe · 16/06/2009 13:50

In an ideal world DD would go to bed a bit later as I don't get back from work until half five/six however she is absolutely shattered by then. Couldn't keep her awake if I tried!

She wakes up bloody early though so we just have our extra time together in the morning as regardless of her bedtime she is an early riser.

misscathcart · 16/06/2009 13:52

2 yr old goes at 7pm and gets up at 6 -6.30am

ohdearwhatamess · 16/06/2009 13:54

Ds2, 16mo, in bed and asleep by 6.45-7. Wakes up by 6am regardless of bedtime and length of daytime napping.

3 yo ds1 [insert exasperated emoticon] should be in bed and asleep by 6.45-7 unless he has had a daytime nap, in which case it can be nearer 9pm. I have to keep him up otherwise he'll spend the whole time shouting 'wake up and play with me ds2' at ds2 or poking him. He gave up regular daytime napping back in November but is doing it again at the moment (right now, in fact) because he's had a busy few days and is a bit under the weather, and then he gets into a vicious cycle of being so tired that he needs a nap, the staying up too late.

I never stay with him whilst he goes to sleep (only exception is if we're away somewhere and he's a bit scared). That would make him stay awake, and it would take hours to be able to leave the room.

ThePhantomPlopper · 16/06/2009 14:32

3yo and 16mo both in bed and asleep for 6:30, wake up anytime between 07:00-08:00am.

LilRedWG · 16/06/2009 14:34

DD in bed by 7pm, generally sleeps a good 12 hours at least.

If your DD is happy then stick with your current times.

duckyfuzz · 16/06/2009 14:37

5yo DTs in be 7-7.30 school nights and awake around 7, 8-8.30 in the hols

nelix2000 · 16/06/2009 15:24

DS 2 years old 5.30-6pm sleeps till 7am.
DD 2 weeks old, so whenever she dictates!

PuppyMonkey · 16/06/2009 15:32

DD2 (2.2) goes at 7pm and sleeps til 7am

DD1 (12 yrs) goes at 9.30am and gets up at 7am on a school day or any time before midday at the weekend. Doncha love (nearly) teenagers?

PavlovtheForgetfulCat · 16/06/2009 15:33

dd almost 3 - 7:30pm - 8pm or so. Sleeps until 6:30am-7am.

insertwittynicknameHERE · 16/06/2009 15:39

DD is 18mo and is usually in bed by 9pm at the latest. She sleeps really well though and has approx 10-13 hours so DH and I get chance to have a good nights sleep.

I would love for DD to go to bed earlier, say like 7pm but when we try she is just not having it lol.

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 16/06/2009 15:43

I'm a stickler for ensuring children get adequate sleep, IMO there are to many chronically sleep deprived children whose behaviour becomes difficult and unmanageable because they are over-tired. How are children, or anyone for that matter, supposed to learn and engage and be good tempered on little or no good quality sleep?

Young children need help to learn to go to sleep by themselves at a reasonable time and be able to stay asleep until a reasonable hour. So good sleep habits should begin from an early age.

My DS is 9mths old and he has three hour long naps throughout the day and goes to bed between 6 and 6.30pm every night. As he gets older he will probably be able to go to bed later but definately no later than 8pm. I will gauge his tiredness levels to detrmine his ideal bedtime.

As children my sister and I were put to bed at 7pm and it's a sentiment I share with my parents.

Of course children will resist bedtimes- it's natural to want to stay up with mum and dad or keep playing but it is our responsibility as their parents to do what's best for them.

mumof2222222222222222boys · 16/06/2009 15:56

Both DSs (2 and 4) go to bed at 7pm, and we are quite strict about it. Sometimes 4yo is still chatting to us at 7.20ish, and occasionally at weekends they stay up to 8pm. We don't have any major battles unless staying at friends etc - 4yo is a saint, but 2yo - far from it!!

Neither of them sleep during the day as a rule and they both need 12 hours sleep - although younger one seems to get away with less!

CacklingandBarking · 16/06/2009 15:59

DD - 3.8 (think I said 3.7 on prev thread but just realised she's older.. anyway) upstairs for stories etc at 7:00pm, lights out 7:30pm

DS - 17wks on Saturday - about 6:15pm

HensMum · 16/06/2009 16:02

20 months. In bed and usually asleep by 7.15pm.

Usually settles himself but sometimes needs a bit of help, either shhhing from the door or sittig in there if things are really bad.

Has been waking early recently - between 5am-6am. He's happy enough to chatter away to himself for up to half an hour, which is nice but it does wake us up too.
