DS (3) is potty trained but not great at holding it.

Where would you draw the line - is it ok to wee in...

a forest?
a big park?
a playground?
in the street?

Or is it never acceptable?

I wouldn't have liked to me thirsty in your car Ruby

insywinsyspider · 12/05/2009 15:03

ds1 is just 3, in pants at 20 months and flattly refused to use the portable potty from 2.5yrs as he pee's standing up at home, personally I let him pee in any of those places as discretely as possible, down a drain or on grass preferabily or on my car wheel so it ends up in gutter, people may not like it but sure they don't bat an eyelid when a dog pees up a lamp post and at least ds will grow out of it
My friends dd is happy to use portable potty so they use that, she says the grass is too tickly on her bottom

insywinsyspider · 12/05/2009 15:05

sycamore - in answer to your question she can't hold her wee much longer than ds, they do hold her out if they forget potty, kind of hold her in sitting position facing away from them if that makes sense (or if on grass and discrete I've seen them use potty without a liner if they've run out)

We've done that with DD insywinsy, but my goodness, we def have not got the hang of it. I ALWAYS end up with my jeans spattered and my traines stood in the way of the trickles!

Yuck! DD now thankfully at the stage where this virtually never happens. Good job given she drinks so much the last pee she did in the pottette (car journey to Wales) was barely contained by the bag, let alone soaked up by the pad!

Weegiemum · 12/05/2009 15:12

A friend of mine caught her little boy peeing aginst a tree in the back garden. When she demanded "why are you doing that?" he answered "Daddy does it when you're not here!"

Dottoressa · 12/05/2009 15:12

In a forest, well hidden in the trees is ok by me. Other than that, I favour the toilet!

That goes for girls and boys alike...

Sassybeast · 12/05/2009 15:22

Carry a porta potty and keep your waste products to yourself. I've never had the need to let any on mine pee in public - it's not tHAT difficult. At what age do you stop letting them widdle wherever they want ?

fi they have to go they have to go and if for whatever reason i found myself in the rare situation where they needed to pee in public ( boy OR girl) then, you can find a place anywhere.

a grid

a tree

Tortington · 12/05/2009 15:29

its not like shes saying that they are continual outdoor pissers.

just in an emergency - i assume

which i think is ok and i think everyone else is arsey

angelene · 12/05/2009 15:38

Me and my family were out for a walk on Sunday, we were sitting by a lovely pond where we were feeding the ducks, there were swans, coots and geese and proper reeds there, and my sister got her DS (3.7) to wee into the pond! I was but everyone else seemed to be OK with it, maybe it was just me that thinks it's rather gross?

mumof2222222222222222boys · 12/05/2009 15:46

DS2 has been potty training for about 2 months. Like someone else's DS he likes to widdle on the tyre. All the above are ok I think with a bit of discretion.

The other morning, I went into his room to find him proudly standing there in his cot, having taken off PJs and night nappy...saying, "I've done a wee wee on Roary's wheel!" roary (the Racing car) was parked in the cot.

Hmmm. Like the book says, "The potty's the place!!!"

Sidge · 12/05/2009 15:53

I don't mind small children peeing in parks and places where there are no loos nearby, but I really don't like seeing them pee up the side of cars/car tyres or houses. Their parent could at least try and find a patch of grass or a bush.

If the wee can puddle or run along the pavement then it's not acceptable in my book. And just because dogs wee up things doesn't mean children can urinate indiscriminately too.

StinkyPee · 12/05/2009 15:53

I have a friend who carries a potty with her EVERYWHERE! She lines it with a nappy sack with a maternity towel stuck in the bottom to absorb the wee.
We've even had a chat over coffee whilst she makes up a batch of these "wee catchers".

I don't know whether I'm at the thought or dazzled by her genius...

Sidge · 12/05/2009 16:03

How bizarre StinkyPee! Does she not realise that Britain in the 21st century has these wonderful things in most dwellings and public places called toilets?

Greensneeze · 12/05/2009 16:06

I think it's a great idea, if you can be arsed with the faff. One simply cannot always get to a toilet - fact. I would personally much rather let them have a wee down a drain or behind a tree than have a sobbling, crotch-clutching child desperately needing a wee - when they need to go, it tends to be urgent.

A bit of child-wee isn't a serious public health hazard - the outside world is coated with effluent anyway from birds, cats, spiders, bacteria... it is possible to get too neurotic about it.

I'm much more offended by piles of disgusting dog crap everywhere than the odd splash of baby wee.

nappyaddict · 12/05/2009 16:08

I have a few more:

The beach
A shop with no toilet (using a potty)
A car park
Up a car tyre (your own car not someone elses )

JimmyMcNulty · 12/05/2009 16:12

Ooh we did this yesterday (or rather ds did). He is 2.9 and only just potty-trained - he has until now had a big 'blind spot' about weeing while in his car seat and would just do it without telling us - yesterday I was driving and he started wriggling around like crazy and shouted 'I need a wee!'. I normally have a potette with me but had forgotten it. I found somewhere to stop at the side of the road and he did a HUGE wee in the gutter, shielded by the open car door in front of him and me behind him. He didn't really like doing it there though. I was just delighted that he'd finally told me, tbh. I love Ruby's idea of carrying an empty pop bottle though - think he'd quite like that.

EyeballsisonaDietAgain · 12/05/2009 16:18

So this is why men think it's ok to piss wherever the mood takes them? What do you all do when you have daughters? What do you do yourselves?

I'm sort of being tongue in cheek but not entirely. Men using the streets as a toilet totally disgusts me and they obviously get the idea from somewhere.

insywinsyspider · 12/05/2009 16:19

greensneeze - i agree with you about dog crap

sidge - sometimes getting to a toilet isn't possible, ds1 at 2yrs cried when he had an accident in his car seat as I was on the motorway and couldn't stop, he told me he needed to go too but there was nothing I could do I'd rather he had a quick pee discretely by my car rather than make him have to wet himself, we don't do it as a regular thing, I think you can plan around it but sometimes they just need to go

Greensneeze · 12/05/2009 16:20

I don't think men peeing in public is because they are allowed to as children. Most of the parents I know with girls let them have a wee outside if they are desperate too.

You don't see men emptying bowls of spaghetti over their heads in restaurants or eating their own shit, do you? No, because most of them have grown out of that sort of infant behaviour.

Gosh this has just brought back a traumatic memory of me being about 5 and in a garden centre with my mum. I was desperate for a wee (had a urine infection as it turned out) but she kept telling me to wait as I'd only just been... I ended up crouched in a corner trying to hide behind some plants and did it there - only to be seen by an outraged lady who shouted 'WHOSE IS THIS DISGUSTING CHILD?'

[heads off for therapy]

Greensneeze · 12/05/2009 16:26

lol, maybe it was Sidge?

EyeballsisonaDietAgain · 12/05/2009 16:33

Agreed but it is more accepted for boys to do it. I'll get back to you in about 18 months when DD decides to spurn the nappy

I just hate the smell of piss everywhere I go so anything that could be done to stop it would make me happy
