Hi ladies,
Just popping on while ds is asleep with a query.
We have been pretty much full time with reusables for 2 weeks now but everything seems to leak/wick (what's the difference?!)
He is 5 and half weeks old and 8lbs 12oz we have tried BG, Pop ins, Sandys and airflows, lollipop fleece and TB Bamboozle.
Don't get on with TB wraps at all, just the wrong shape.
So far I haven't used liners, boosters or inserts apart from the newborn one that comes with the BG, should I? Can't believe that none of my nappies work or that he is such a power wee-er already that i have to change him every hour.
Help!!

JennyPenny22 · 06/05/2009 12:56

Ceb - that is odd! I am sure there is a simple answer. DD2 is smaller than that, under 8lb and we haven't had a single leak yet and have similar nappies. We have had no problems with BG or Sandys or TB. AND we have got on fine with tots wraps! Although we are now using Nature babies wraps but only because they are so much prettier! Lol.

So, what have you been doing? The BG, do you fold them down with the poppers for the smallest rise? And you are using the newborn inserts inside? Where are they leaking? If it is the legs, have you tried fiddling about getting a good fit when you put them on? We have to do it a couple of times to get it right, but then don't have leaks.

With the Sandys - what are you washing them in? And how much washing powder etc? I have found them pretty bombproof to be honest and have just bought more. We have used them with the tots bots wraps with no problems. We get a 3-4 hour stretch if she doesn't poo, and have never leaked, not even just a bit on the wrap or anything. Are they the Extra small ones?

Haven't used the pop ins on a newborn so can't help there. I have lollipop nappies to try but haven't gone down that route yet.

ceb80 · 06/05/2009 13:10

Yup am doing all that on the BG, maybe I should use the bigger insert? It is the legs they leak from as it leaks onto the bottom of his vest, will try being more careful with the fit. Am using half the amount of washing liq and rinses before and after.

HAve no idea about the BG then! Apart from maybe your DS has smaller legs than my DD! DOn't panic though, I am sure they will be fine in a few weeks. Were they preloved ones? Are they difinatly waterproof? Ie, is the outter wet to touch when the insert is wet? It should still feel dry.

Washing all sounds fine so not sure why the sandys don't work either! Are they the XS or just S?

TheNatty · 06/05/2009 14:39

with my BGs we had exactly the same leaks in the same places. it was a simple absorbancy problem. we switched the inserts and they were fine.
i remember one of mine only doing 45 mins once with the original insert.
some babies are justr heavy wetters.

They were preloved but are def waterproof, Sandy's are XS. Should I try some inserts/boosters?

TheNatty · 06/05/2009 15:03

ceb i would say def try another type of insert. bamboo is good for a young baby, or hemp if you have it.
my dd was such a heavy wetter microfibre and cotton did nothing for her even in the early days.
some babies are just like that i suppose. pain in the arse because you have to get diff inserts for each new nappy you have bought.
easy peasy do 5 hemp inserts for a tenner, free postage.
you can get cheap bamboo insert preloved fairly easily, ive not seen many hemp tho

Make sure his vests aren't too tight, I think they can cause wicking if they're pressing too much on the nappy. The pop ins are bamboo, so might need a few washes to get up to full absorbency.

TheNatty · 06/05/2009 15:40

4 my address should be on my paypal payment. if not i need you email address to send you my postal address

Hmmmm Vests are all too big so can't be that, have washed pop ins at least 8 times, should I do more?
Will get some hemp inserts, forgive my ignorance but do they go next to his bum or in a pocket or can they do either?

TheNatty · 06/05/2009 19:48

inside the pocket in a pocket nappy, with 2 part systems you can either put it in the nappy or between the nappy and wrap.

hemp inserts can be worth it, esp as u will more then likely have to use them in the long run (most toddlers need it as boosters) so at least if u get them now u will get ur moneys worth out of them ifuswim

Just popping in to tell you all not to forget that it's Buy British Month on Cloth Nappy Addicts, where bargains and lovliness abound!!!

4andnotout · 06/05/2009 21:03

My email is [email protected]

twoclimbingboys · 06/05/2009 21:10

I love ittis (although Blake's bum is too large for them and we have occasional poop leaks) as they are tiny; fit under any outfits and take up hardly any space in change bags. The turqouise and rockmelon are particlularly lovely to look at.

I still have mixed feelings over wool. I have woolywraps longies and they seem bombproof but I think lanolising is a real chore!

Deemented · 06/05/2009 21:16

So get some spray lanolin then!

JennyPenny22 · 06/05/2009 21:18

Deemented - whats that? CNA?

Deemented · 06/05/2009 21:23

Cloth Nappy Addicts, a website for erm... cloth nappy addicts!!

here ya go - but be warned... tis rather addictive I'm toothlesswonder over there, btw.

treedelivery · 06/05/2009 21:34

I don't know any nappy addicts.

twoclimbingboys · 06/05/2009 21:36

spray lanolin?

off to google...

Deemented · 06/05/2009 21:50

Spray Lanolin - Lanolin that comes in a spray bottle that you can just spray onto wool and not have to soak. Though when i get new wool i usually soak to lanolise and then just topup as and when with the spray lanolin.

I get it from Ewe Need It.

Camomilla · 06/05/2009 21:56

ceb, by 5 weeks, XS sandy's were useless really, wet within 2 minutes, but then we had S bamboo which were fine (incidentally, I've got 10 if interested ) with pop-ins, it took me a while but when they work, they work fine. you need to make sure that you "push" the soaker inside wo it doesn't touch the leg cuffs. by the time DD was on the 2nd poppers, this stopped happening and no more wicking - HTH

I loooooove the disana pull-on and the wollywraps longies. and before I forget, if anyone's interested I have a pair of longies, they're torquoise and pink, pre-loved, they are felted so bomb-proof, but by the time I got them they were "too right" for DD. I'd say they'd do from 2 to 6 months.

JennyPenny22 · 06/05/2009 21:57

ohhh, spray lanolin sounds good. Does it work out more expensive? I am guessing you still need to hand wash it before hand though? For me, the hand washing is more of a chore than the soaking.

WIll go onto CNA now!

Deemented · 06/05/2009 22:03

Yep, still need to hand wash, unless you have a good wool cycle on your washing machine..

sasamaxx · 06/05/2009 22:31

ceb - with your sandys are you absolutely certain that your wrap is completely covering them - they are really big and the tiniest bit of nappy outside the wrap will cause wicking. Watch that label too - if it sticks up, you could be in for some trouble!!

JennyPenny22 · 06/05/2009 22:34

I do have a wool cycle and I risked my disana soaker in it yesterday and it came out fine but I have been too scared to try anything else in there! Do you think it is OK then? I would love to be able to just shove them in the machine! The Disana ones are very thick so thought they would be fine and they were very stained and stank so thought it was worth the risk - I do love them though!

If you use a wool soaker during the day - do you use it for the whole day and then air overnight or so you have a few and air between each use? If all goes well with my newborn wool soaker I might see if I can use it full time. I just LOVE the soaker than we have, its so pretty and girly! But haven't tried it yet.

Do you think one lanlolising would be enough for overnight? She is only 12 days old so not liketoddler peeing!
