What's in a name? Suggestions for what to call a girl's "front bottom".

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post but couldn't think where else to put it.

Anyway, DD 18 months old, still too early to potty train but developmentally she's obviously learning to speak. So when it comes to it what word are we going to use?

Boys are easy - "willy" is age appropriate and not too crude.

Girls bits don't seem to be that straightforward.

Vagina - too clinical and not actually correct when it comes to peeing.

Vulva - a bit too clinical and odd.

Front bottom - too French and Saunders.

Any suggestions?

DD (5) says 'wee bottom'. She knows there is a 'baby hole' down there too, but is not planning on having babies until she is at least 11 (apparently) so says she is only bothered about the wee bit. DS (7) knows the correct structure, function and nomenclature. And is supremely uninterested.

Springflower · 16/04/2009 23:26

I made the mistake of telling my son I didnt have a willy I just had a hole where the pee came out. Fine until he started going on about my hole! Have now told him the correct words but he still really needs something to call other peoples e.g. his cousins - I said 'girly bits' but remembering the vagina monologues and whats been said above I do agree that we shouldnt have these unmentionable bits.

It used to be Fluff but have renamed it minmin after I saw it on a thread similar to this one.

It made me

TheFallenMadonna · 16/04/2009 23:31

I should point out that I use the word vulva, but she prefers wee bottom

The word vulva is quite scary for some people. I was talking at work to another science teacher about how to teach sex education to year 9, and he was very about using vulva. Quite happy with vagina, penis etc, but not vulva. In fact he wasn't sure it was an appropriate thing to be talking about. In sex education. A science teacher. My mind boggled.

My little boy has a willy (boys are much easier aren't they!)and my little girl has a 'nudy' or noody, not sure how you spell it!

Kind of came from talking about being 'in the nudy' and then she just decided that's what it was called!

sasamaxx · 17/04/2009 13:50

DS has a 'pinga' (yes I know it's pingu's sister but it's also cuban slang for penis, and no, we're not cuban lol)

DD - think we're going to go with 'twinkle'

angelene - just curious...is that your name? Only that's my DD's name and am quite excited to see it on another person!!

Salleroo · 17/04/2009 14:03

My dd (17 mths) calls it her micky, on my instigation. How confused is she going to be???

Caz10 · 17/04/2009 14:14

DD (16mths) says "foof" when she is doing/has done a poo so that rules that one out!

very tricky - but i honestly don't think that "bits" has any shameful/negative connotations

Berrie · 17/04/2009 14:29

I'm shocked. I think of fanny as being really rude! And quim.
We just refer to our bottom and qualify it, if needs be, with at the front or at the back.

PadDad · 17/04/2009 14:34

fanny's rude in a way that willy is not?

Salleroo · 17/04/2009 14:37

Couldnt go with fanny. Mind you we used pussy, what in god's name were my parents thinking, I wont even admit that out loud. Micky it is or maybe mini. Fanny, Vag, etc, so wrong coming out of a toddlers mouth.

Berrie · 17/04/2009 14:37

It was when I was growing up. Is it the same for you?

MrsBoo · 17/04/2009 14:45

My DD calls it her Ninni - which is kind of cute and doesn't sound too rude

PadDad · 17/04/2009 14:53

Nah Berrie, i think of them as equal 'strength'.

Wasn't mentioned as much as willies in my youth, but not any ruder, as you think.

ruddynorah · 17/04/2009 15:03

dd is nearly 3 and she says vulva. i don't find it odd at all. we haven't explained vaginas yet though, she thinks babies come out of vulvas..which they do really, in the end.

cornflakegirl · 17/04/2009 15:05

I used front bottom as a kid. But after several of these threads, I know think vulva is a lovely word.

purepurple · 17/04/2009 15:10

I hate front bottom, don't know why
I always say 'bits', covers a lot!
And you can use it for boys and girls

hazeyjane · 17/04/2009 19:36

Minnie was my great grandmothers name, and i just think of her when I see all the min/minnie/minmin words, but it also makes me think of minge, which is horrible (and i'm not sure what that says about my great grandmother). Quim sounds way too porntastic for me. Fanny definately sounds ruder to me than willy - I don't know why.

But i do know that seeing the name 'Fanny Fidler' on one of the ancient gravestones in the cemetry opposite our house today, caused me to snarf quite loudly!

juneybean · 17/04/2009 19:40

Has foof been mentioned lol

Joycey29 · 17/04/2009 19:45

My dd and all her friends have a minnie-moo which is cute and ok in public. I also don't think it will age too much.
I hate vagina as it is a harsh word and sounds odd from youngsters. But then I am a fan of willy over penis!

miffin · 17/04/2009 20:27

My sisters and I always had a 'wee-wee' when we were little. I was kind of surprised when my sister taught her girl to say 'vagina' - or 'gina' as it generally was. But then she was surprised I've taught by little boy 'penis' rather than willy! A reaction against mum perhaps??

I don't look down at all on other nicknames, but I do find it odd when it is unnamed altogether. In my husband's house (MIL very modest) it was just 'down there' or 'between your legs'. That does seem a bit inadequate!

EldonAve · 17/04/2009 20:32

It was unnamed in our household growing up
I think we will be going with vulva so I might have to switch DS from saying willy to penis
