i saw one mumsnetter openly anounce that her kid had a happy meal and wondered.

no, i am being serious in asking this question - maybe mn isn';t as arsey as it used to be - i dunno

i certainly try not to go in maccy D's becuase its killing the planet and taking over the world.

howver it does the best coffee imo - kenco - so not baby killer.

what say you

i am sure there is an argument about the shitey ingrediants etc.

what is the mn collective view of maccy D's these days?

Gemmie, sorry to pick on you but how do you know they're the biggest buyers of palm oil from such sources? Certainly their website suggests they don't use it anymore. I'm curious as to what to believe.

LackaDAISYcal · 14/03/2009 22:46

strangely enough as a coeliac it was the one place when i was out and about on my travels with work that i could guarantee a gluten free meal as long as i just had the patty (they don't even call them burgers ffs), so I have eaten more than my fair share of big macs without the bun.

thankfully gluten free meals are more readily available in motorwy services these days and i no longer have to rely on what my DH cheekily refers to as "pre-chewed food".

The kids love it and have a happy meal as an occasional treat though, usually when we are rushed for time and they get a drive through.
I have no real ethical stance against them though...it's just that the food is generally tasteless shit.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 14/03/2009 22:47

I'm thinking more in general terms of verifying the general claims made against a popular foe rather than the specifics of palm oil...

DH worked there as a student and said they were a pretty fair employer; very big on training and getting your stars etc....and he got all his meals when working there

dragonbutter · 14/03/2009 22:54

there really are some poncetastic smug patronising opinions on this thread.

sorry i have to let it out.

my kids have never been to a macdonalds.
I have not been in one in 20 odd yrs.

They were particulary nasty in the way they handled their detractors. www.mcspotlight.org/case/index.htmlmaclibel

iirc they were found guilty of treating chickens badly in their salughterhouse practices,
driving local wages down,
cutting down rainforsts..

but the inofrmation is there.
not a very nice company IMO and i won't give them a penny of my cash.

ScottishMummy · 14/03/2009 22:57

oopsagain · 14/03/2009 22:59

am loving this - we'll shovel any amount of shite into our kids' mouths and call it a "treat" bullshit

themoon66 · 14/03/2009 22:59

And that whistling advert.... creepy.

skramble · 14/03/2009 23:00

Mc Donalds is pretty crap, hate sitting in (feels like a public toilet and the staff like to wipe up around you strange as it still feels manky, despite their compulsion to clean around you), but will quite happily buy their tea and will eat a variety of other food out of there.

FWIW I think the food contains consideribly less crap these days than plenty other types of food you can buy.

skramble · 14/03/2009 23:01

Oh do agree they seem to be good to their staff, have flexible policies and not bad training.

dragonbutter · 14/03/2009 23:03

you can't see it herbea?
really?

actually ds1 came home with a wildlife pack all about tigers including stickers a pencil etc. better than the usual stuff by far.

gemmiegoatlegs · 14/03/2009 23:09

i think the are jacking off in your secret sauce

HerBeatitudeLittleBella · 14/03/2009 23:10

No, I can't. Go on, spell it out.

Why do you people think anyone who claims not to like the stuff is lying?

I mean really, do you honestly believe that it is so lovely that someone who claims not to like it is lying?

I feel a bit like that about women who claim not to fancy Johnny Depp, but I do know I'm being unreasonable because beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

ScottishMummy · 14/03/2009 23:11

gemGLthats why so tasty and sticky.jism juice.yum

gemmiegoatlegs · 14/03/2009 23:12

oopsagain · 14/03/2009 23:12

mzybe they learend something form the trial,a dn maybe they are alot nicer as emploeyers now.
And maybe the chickens are better treated and slaughtered more efficiently.

But I haven't been there, I have a long memeory.. and there's plwnty of otherplcaes to go before i think about macdonalds

Soo I don't think there is a MN "opinion" on whether or not is a good thing. but alot of MNer have an opinion

HolyGuacamole · 14/03/2009 23:12

I've read Fast Food Nation and have watched Super Size Me. Both are great and really informative on the evils of fast food.

Erm, cough, cough.....I love McDonalds although KFC is my favourite, Zinger Tower....yummy! I know it's not great for you but surely everything in moderation, I have fast food every few weeks and thoroughly enjoy it

When I was young, there was no such thing as McDonalds in my town, had never tried a Big Mac till I was about 13 or 14. Those were the days of Wimpy and the banana split and knickerbocker glory....whoa....hold me back! And don't forget the way Wimpy chopped their onions into tiny little bits

dragonbutter · 14/03/2009 23:13

well perhaps it's the same as you saying that anybody who actually likes the taste of a macdonalds is some sort of inferior 'grown adult'.
it's patronising.

i'm not of the opinion it's the greatest meal in the world but I do occasionally eat it and wouldn't judge people negatively who do.

ScottishMummy · 14/03/2009 23:14

Gem you want secret sauce with your macrobiotic wheat sticks?
