i saw one mumsnetter openly anounce that her kid had a happy meal and wondered.

no, i am being serious in asking this question - maybe mn isn';t as arsey as it used to be - i dunno

i certainly try not to go in maccy D's becuase its killing the planet and taking over the world.

howver it does the best coffee imo - kenco - so not baby killer.

what say you

i am sure there is an argument about the shitey ingrediants etc.

what is the mn collective view of maccy D's these days?

Yes they run a franchise model but there is a franchise fee paid to the corporation.

Don't do ready meals either - perfectly prepared to accept they may be just as fatty and unhealthy as a Mcdonalds burger.

littlerach · 14/03/2009 19:00

I don't go there at all.
Actually, tell a lie, I took dds and their friend there a couple of years ago as she was round for tea and we had a power cut and it was dark (so no srnies) and there was really nowhere else to go.
But I didn't eat there.

However, dh has taken them there and so has my mum.

I hate the food, atmosphere, everything.
And I htink they, or an umbrella co, owns pret and probably hundreds of other places.

HerBeatitudeLittleBella · 14/03/2009 19:05

pmsl at how vociferous some people are about it. If you want to eat that stuff, it's up to you, but please don't accuse anyone who doesn't, of hypocrisy and snobbery.

I actually like treating my ds occasionally as well - I remember how exciting that once a year trip to Mcs as a child was (root beer, sitting in a train, tomato ketchup- woo hoo) and dont mind seeing that expression on my sons face as well.

He has to eat homemade, organic lentil weavery food the rest of the time and does so without moaning mostly so feel guiltfree about treating him tbh. He thinks having fishfingers round his friends houses are a treat...

Ewe · 14/03/2009 19:07

I love it! Quarter pounder with cheese and a strawberry milkshake, delicious

giantkatestacks · 14/03/2009 19:08

HBLB - am not accusing people who dont eat there of snobbery - just think that some people are shocked by people admitting to ever setting foot in such a place whilst giving their kids fecking cheese strings and potato waffles at home thats all - they dont want to be seen in there and so they bang on about the quality and the ethics etc.

HerBeatitudeLittleBella · 14/03/2009 19:09

oh OK.

cocolepew · 14/03/2009 19:09

We go, probably every 6 weeks or so. I like it I agree with paolosgirl, if I took a stand against everything I'd be living on fresh air.

Ewe · 14/03/2009 19:09

Just out of interest, when you were all younger did you feel the same or has the objection to McD's come with age?

Ewe · 14/03/2009 19:10

And do you like Burger King, KFC etc or object to all fast food?

giantkatestacks · 14/03/2009 19:14

ugh KFC and Nandos [shudders] cant cope with any cheap chicken at all - in fact I struggle with pizza hut and subway as well...god am inconsistant...

My ds would probably throw a complete wobbler in Pizza Hut at the lack of a woodfired thin marguerita

Hassled · 14/03/2009 19:15

I have been known to frequent MacDonalds - not for the burgers, but for the Pancakes, Sausage (by which they mean a thin burger thing of sausagemeat and MSG with added salt), Maple Syrup and Coffee breakfast. It is bloody lovely.

I think if you poke about for long enough in the history or activity of any large multinational corporation you're going to find some dodgy ethics somewhere. Which doesn't exonerate MacDonalds, I know. I've forgotten what my point is .

madlentileater · 14/03/2009 19:16

you won't be surprised to hear that we don't go to McDonalds. Apart from a few birthday parties dcs were invited to when younger- which they still recall bitterly as for some reason they 'weren't allowed'to have only chips and were given plates with meat on!!!
our reasons are- ethical (bad corporate practice, bad labour practices, animal welfare, land use and their draconian response to criticism) plus aesthetic (crap food) plus health (crap food)
enough?
have just asked ds2 what he thinks about them, he says 'completely rank'
(MLE wonders if she has the strength to defend herself in the second longest libel case in english history)

treedelivery · 14/03/2009 19:17

I honestly don't think their food is as nutritionally bad as some of the stuff I see in lunch boxes. Tins of soup could nearly kill you where you are stood with salt. And nearly everything in a wrapper fuels some destructive global nightmare of some kind or other. If I thought about this stuff I'd feel a guilty failure. As I struggle to get to playschool on time as it is I'll just kepp humming to myself in ignorant bliss whilst trying to be nice to the planet if I can. Hopeless I know.

La la laaaa la la lal aaaaaaa dumdiii do di do do di do..

Tortington · 14/03/2009 19:18

i think i am right in saying that this thread is more anti mac than pro mac - so far

We don't go, but then it's usually very inconvenient for us, so we'd have to make an effort which is pretty much not the point.

My son watched Supersize Me this summer and won't go, also. I've encouraged it but mainly because I think it's good for him to think about these things.

And now I want a Big Mac, thanks.

HecatesTwopenceworth · 14/03/2009 19:22

That's my opinion of it.

I call it MkYukkies, but I don't actually care about it, not seriously. Take my kids once in a while - which is fun cos they are gluten intolerant so there's not much they can have! but they like it.

It's awful stuff from a nutritional pov, tis true, but still there's something quite nice about guiltily scoffing down a quarterpounder mystery meat and a woodpulp icecream

All things in moderation. The odd McD or something isn't going to kill the kids!

Itsjustafleshwound · 14/03/2009 19:26

If anyone has read 'Fast Food Nation' you wouldn't just single out MD but all fast food outlets...

Supersize Me was just Jackass under a different name ...

ScottishMummy · 14/03/2009 19:29

what a accusatory tone.she "openly announced" did she.oh my very gosh how dare she exercise her consumer choice

parents should do what they want with out zealots banging on sanctimoniously

and if that is McD - fair enough

all things in moderation.clearly it eaten excessively it doesn't constitute a good healthy balanced diet.

PersonalClown · 14/03/2009 19:35

As I have an ASD Ds with food issues who will happily inhale a Maccy D's as soon as it's placed in front of him , I'm afraid that I don't care.
I have more pressing issues in my life than if a weekly visit with Nanny is doing him any damage.

treedelivery · 14/03/2009 19:38

WHY do they love it so? My dd [4] can be on her knees and refusing everything - but a chicken nugget will be hoovered up in seconds.

And it's not the 'ooo it's bad and a treat' thing 'cos we're not like that. She has a well stocked biscuit barrel at her diposal on her little kitchen and can help herself to anything or ask.

LurkerOfTheUniverse · 14/03/2009 19:45

it's the toys, makes it all the more appealing

dragonbutter · 14/03/2009 20:49

found it.

i hold up my virtual hands.
it was i who openly announced that my kids had had a happy meal this afternoon.

i was livid.....

...that they didn't bring me some home.

i think it's fine, in moderation.

hannahlouhoo · 14/03/2009 20:59

omg stop it you lot or i'll be getting in the car and going to get a mc flurry. mmmmm ice cream mmmmm

littleducks · 14/03/2009 21:09

i do love an egg muffin, i make them at home for dh and dd but honestly its not quite the same even though i dont even like the orange 'cheese' slices they do use free range eggs now so i dont feel terribly guilty as its just egg, bread and the fake cheese

dd has had their milkshakes, she says the 'M' is for milkshake"

I dont think their food is great but it is reliable sometimes
