Has anyone binge drank AFTER they missed a period (didn't know preg)? How was baby?

Hi, i just worked out that i got completely off my trolly when i was 5 weeks from my period, i didn't think i was pregnant because i was on the pill. We are talking about a 1/4 of one of those half bottles of rum, i swigged it back all in one go. We were having a pirates night...
Basically, this is my first child and i'm really scared i've damaged it. I have a lot of guilt because of various things i've done in my life and i'm thinking 'i have done it again' messed things up AGAIN. Well i tell you what, i can't take anymore, i can't, that will be the last nail in the bloody coffin i swear, i'm depressed already. I've given up so much to have this baby in terms of job security etc and it was SO wanted. If there is something wrong with it i will not be able to NOT attribute it to the alcohol now! Can you understand what i mean? I'm not being cold and callous, i'm just fed up of moping up after my own mistakes and impulsivity that i really sometimes just don't want to be here anymore...

The doctor told me there is a risk at that stage of FAS and neurodevelopmental problems, it's a window of a few days, and i might have been unlucky. He said 'don't worry' BUT he wouldn't let me see his screen, and when i peaked it said 'significant teratogen risk from single binge drinking episode!' the lying man! He was concerned enough to send me a letter about what to do to prevent 'developmental problems'.

My morning sickness didn't kick in until a week later for goodness sake! It's not fair! What is the point of morning sickness if it doesn't stop you drinking at such a crucial stage?

It's not to late to have an abortion at 12 weeks is it?

My husband is very, very angry at me. (he doesn't drink because he lacks the enzyme to metabolise alcohol = more potential damage to foetus!) and he wants us to 'try again'. I never drink usually either, it was just the social pressure! I don't smoke. i take vitamins, and i'm just screwed....as usual.

Me! No idea, went for a heavy weekend, friend had just been dumped by long term girlfriend. Then went up Pendle Hill with lots of lagers cause it was Halloween.

dd fine now, see my thread about freaky children!

With ds1 we went skiing when I was about 7 weeks pg but before I hadmy bfp. I drank lads, ate all sorts of things that you're advised to avoid, had a few tumbles o the slopes and he's now a happy and quite "normal" 3 year old

I also got absolutley wasted and spent hours in a hot tub before I knew I was pg wth ds2. He's now a perfect 6 month old.

Good luck

xx

there was a similar post a while ago which set troll hunters off.
But for benefit of doubt
One 14 yr old profoundly gifted son despite cocktails and extreme drunkeness till 16 weeks.
I did not know til 17 weeks
Nothing thereafter.

I got horribly, horribly, falling over drunk when in the early weeks of pregnancy with both my girls - and had an x-ray on my abdomen with dd2. In neither case did I know I was pregnant. Both my girls are thriving and beautiful and very intelligent. My theory is, in the very early days if you do anything really stupid the pregnancy probably won't continue - a lot don't. If you get through the first 12 weeks and you've knocked the drinking on the head you will almost certainly be fine.

CliffRichardSucksEggsInHell · 19/12/2008 22:27

Look dd is now fine!

VinegarTitsTheSeasonToBeJolly · 19/12/2008 22:33

pmsl Rhubarb

nappyaddict · 19/12/2008 22:34

Yes. 2 days on the trot. He was fine. Well he is a bit slow at doing things but I am assured that's normal!

nappyaddict · 19/12/2008 22:35

Gosh 5 shots is nothing. i had 34 in 2 nights!

daddypigswife · 19/12/2008 23:00

I got very drunk on rum while on holiday when I was pregnant but did not know I was preggas as in early stages . Everything is fine . dd was normal weight etc etc and is now a very healthy intelligant 2 yr old. op I hope you can feel reassured by the other posters

I did a pregnancy test when pregnant with my daughter in Sainsbury's with the most catastrophic hangover...today, a few years later, she played the lead in her nursery play! (stupidly proud mum here)
She's clever, beautiful, athletic and fiesty.
It's rubbish to say this is the peak time for FAS. FAS affects facial features, right now your baby has NO facial features.

wrapstar · 19/12/2008 23:26

I actually don't believe the bit about the doctor. I think that's rubbish.

wrapstar · 19/12/2008 23:27

Gosh yes, troll. Nasty, scaremongering troll too. The stuff about this being the window for FAS is bollocky bollocks.

Alishanty · 21/12/2008 00:23

I think I had a couple of extreme episodes of drinking with both pregnancies before I realised. Obviously stopped once I knew but both lo's are completely normal, ds (age 2) very bright for his age. As long as you limit your drinking from now on, don't think it will have done any harm. It is prolonged, excessive drinking throughout the whole pg that can cause damage. hth.

Heard from a midwife friend that because baby is working from a yolk at early stages and not properly 'plumbed in' you get away with very early stages. Not a medical opinion but hearsay from a good source;I suspect you will be completely fine.
