What music do you listen to in the car when with DC's?

Just wondering as my friend was moaning today about ALWAYS having a nursery rhyme type CD on loop in the car for her 1 year old DS, and I said I put one of them on a couple of times for my DS (also 1 year) but it lasted about 3 songs then the radio went back on or my own CD's! I sing nursery rhymes from time to time but mainly sing along to decent pop / rock music LOL.

DH is a musician so DS has been brought up so far listening to 'normal' music rather than baby stuff. He now bounces in his chair with a huge grin when he recognises daddys band LOL!

So do you think it's fine to keep on 'normal' music on in the car and bypass the baby tunes? Or am I depriving my son or the joys of 'five little ducks went swimming one day'?

I'd be interested to hear what you all listen to!

Plus it's actually really sweet to hear him singing along in his two-year-old language and we have quite good conversations about which animal songs we like best!

(Baa baa black sheep is his favourite )

No kiddie crap is ever played in my car. The only concession to ds1's musical preferences is Queen's Greatest Hits (he is a huge Queen fan ). That is only played if he is being particularly annoying and I need to distract him.

At the moment we have in the CD player the Divine Comedy, Muse, Sound of Music, Killers, and Take That (and Queen of course).

We like the Sticky Kids, and ds loves the B52's.
Sometimes a polite little voice comes from the back seat asking "please may we have Iron Maiden, mummy?"

DD (2.10)loves The Killers and Muse... so that's what tends to be on. Or Radio 4 of course, but she still manages to squawk over pertinent parts of sentences

Highlander · 16/12/2008 15:20

ours (4yo and 2tyo) love the best of James.

We listen to XFM for normal journeys. Slighter longer, or out of London journeys are my CDs (or mine and Dhs if he's in the car) Really, really long journeys we have a couple of homemade mix CDs we've burnt that are 'adult' music, but that the kids like (Doctor Who music, ie Scissor Sisters and that band with Izzy from neighbours, stuff like the Foo Fighters, carefully picked Red Hot Chili Peppers, odd bits and pieces like Dizzee Rascal covering the Ting Tings or Razorlight iirc covering the Umbrella Song)

Neeerly3 · 16/12/2008 15:33

Radio 2 all the way mixed with a bit of Guns and Roses if they have been good (their fav is Welcome to the Jungle) - they are 4.

ohreindeer - my DS LOVES queen! (and ABBA actually...)

ohreindeerwhatamessysleigh · 16/12/2008 15:53

'Another one bites the dust' is his absolute fave - very cute when he sings along (even for the 1000th time).

dinkystinkyclaus · 16/12/2008 16:18

We have a mixture - Laurie Berkner kids songs and Shrek CD for DS (which we can live with) and our CDs. DS (now 2.8) is currently a massive fan of the Ting Tings..

Just had to mention "Blue Moo' by Sandra Boynton.
its an album of 'kids music' but by adults artists.

Our favourites are Speed Turtle by Brian Wilson from the Beach Boys (DD- 19mo), One Shoe Blues by BB King (DH- he plays in a blues band) and Personal Penguin by Davy Jones from the Monkees (me).

The lyrics are funny and witty and the tunes are great.
We are treating ourselves to some more of her stuff for Christmas.

ds 1 and 2 love priscilla wueen of the desert

caspercat · 17/12/2008 16:05

DD (2.5yrs) asks for ABBA, Girls Aloud or Sugababes! Don't mind a bit of pop myself, so is usually fine, but am also trying to get away with Elbow, Smashing Pumpkins, Jane's Addiction or The Killers. But she always says "i want lady singing" & i normally give in .
A friend of mine has to play ITNG or Fifi for her 2 yr old - i refuse to do that, but i guess if you started with it, it's hard to stop. I'd rather have a bit of 'Love Machine' anyday!!

PortAndStilton · 17/12/2008 16:16

At the moment -- ABBA (x3 ), Foals, R.E.M. and Guillemots.

queribus · 17/12/2008 18:34

My 3.9 yo dd loves 'Monster' by The Automatic (she shouts along with the chorus!), I like birds by Eels and Back to black by Amy Winehouse ("the tambourine song").

I'd go insane if I had to try to drive to nusery rhymes etc.

swanriver · 17/12/2008 22:19

Love radio 2. Especially r2 wednesday night folk on returning from scouts. We never listen to r2 at home not quite bouncy enough for housework, or kids dancing but perfect for short journeys.

happywomble · 18/12/2008 07:50

We have a christmas carols CD at this time of year. My poor DCs have to endure me singing along..although they are starting to join in too!

LindzDelirium · 18/12/2008 09:26

Manic Street preachers, Killers, Pulp, My Life Story. DD(6) is getting an ipod for Xmas and I have just copied my itunes to hers - we have exactly the same musical tastes.
