What music do you listen to in the car when with DC's?

Just wondering as my friend was moaning today about ALWAYS having a nursery rhyme type CD on loop in the car for her 1 year old DS, and I said I put one of them on a couple of times for my DS (also 1 year) but it lasted about 3 songs then the radio went back on or my own CD's! I sing nursery rhymes from time to time but mainly sing along to decent pop / rock music LOL.

DH is a musician so DS has been brought up so far listening to 'normal' music rather than baby stuff. He now bounces in his chair with a huge grin when he recognises daddys band LOL!

So do you think it's fine to keep on 'normal' music on in the car and bypass the baby tunes? Or am I depriving my son or the joys of 'five little ducks went swimming one day'?

I'd be interested to hear what you all listen to!

I adore the Smashing Pupmkins, a long of teenage angst was played out over Gish

Will need to introduce DS to the delights of Billy Corgan and co!

DH refuses to have kiddie music in the car so it's whatever he has on his ipod - currently into Stevie Wonder which the kids love, good to jig along to! They are also very fond of "Dude looks like a lady" by Aerosmith for some reason! (except they sing "you look like a lady"

i have never had kids music in my car, it's always been the radio or cd's for grown ups

noiamnot · 15/12/2008 21:05

they are very taken with billy corgan that is true. excellent drum work on gish. that is what we are listening to.

UnfortunatelyMe · 15/12/2008 21:06

I used to do the 5 little ducks etc when they were in the bath/just walking along the street etc.
We have Pink, Hootie and the Blowfish, Elbow, KT Tunstall, INXS and Michael Jackson in the car at the moment.

SnowMuchToBits · 15/12/2008 21:08

Lol, we usually have either radio 3 or radio 4, never "kids stuff". Ds is 8 now, but we never did it, even when he was a baby/toddler. He seems to be quite happy listening to Richard Strauss/The Archers.....

flowerytaleofNewYork · 15/12/2008 21:08

It's never occurred to me to get special music for the car for DS. We are currently listening to Will Young's new album, or the radio.

We have a cd of Christmas carols in the cd player at home and DS asks for it to be put on when we're in the lounge

Blondilocks · 15/12/2008 21:08

DD had children's tapes, but mainly the musical mystery tours ones which were a bit less annoying!

However I didn't have a car when she was very little. Her dad did though & he'd never have put on kids music. She even used to sleep through the likes of the Ministry of Sound Clubbers Guide to Ibiza ....

I think if i have another baby I wouldn't be able to cope with children's music in the car & would just put my music on (although not the ones with swearing on!)

Jux · 15/12/2008 21:41

DD always asks for Bob Dylan. Has done for years now.

PestoHoHoHoMonster · 15/12/2008 21:43

Whatever we fancy. At the moment it's Marc Bolan - T-Rex

MadamDeathstarOverBethlehem · 15/12/2008 21:49

We always listened to classical music and traditional jazz. One day I decided to widen the repertoire to include Led Zeppelin. Halfway through 'Stairway to Heaven' I hear a pained little voice - 'Why are you doing this to us?'.

Poncetastic.

boogeek · 16/12/2008 09:28

LOL MadamDeathstar - that reminds me of the time Phil Collins came on the radio and my then 2-year-old clamped her hands over her ears and started shouting "noooo! noooooo! not music!"

bellaBuonNatalevita · 16/12/2008 09:33

I do not seem to have a choice of what to listen to in the car - DS's (11.6 & 9) are always faffing with the cd player - Nikelback, Greenday, Razorlight, McFly.

thequietone · 16/12/2008 09:35

We have never had Children's music in the car, so DS1 has a wonderful breadth of musical knowledge now. His favourite is either The Rolling Stones, Holst Planets Suite or Blur "Think Tank".

ByThePowerOfBaileys · 16/12/2008 09:35

the radio. colours are brighter CD, Kieser Chiefs CD, Katie Melua CD.

need to change the CD's as they have been in there for a while and I am bored but the kids love them.

I do sometimes worry about the boys (2 & 4) sitting in the back of the car singing I predict a riot at high volume

bandgeek · 16/12/2008 09:40

Mine listen to a whole range of stuff too...although I try to vet it a bit more now after my 2.7 year old learned the lyrics to Ida Maria's 'I like you so much better when you're naked'

mistlethrushinapeartree · 16/12/2008 09:44

Brahms. The Beech Boys. Bach. Beethoven. Verdi. The Beetles. Jazz (the sort with a tune). Carmina Burana. 5 Guys named Mo. Temperence 7. The Ukelelee Orchestra of Great Britain. Return to the forbidden planet.......

We do have one nursery rhymes CD which is actually nicely sung, with some more interesting songs and musically done - but have to replay Hickory Dickory Dock about 15 times each time we play that one which can get tiresome on a long journey.

Northumberlandlass · 16/12/2008 13:09

Depends on who is in the car - DH plays AC/DC althought did bring it's own problems when DS started learning the words !

I play endless amounts of musical CD's - Oliver at the moment ! So, DS is very sweetly singing 'Consider Yourself' !

xx

CuppaTeaJanice · 16/12/2008 13:13

It's usually either David Cassidy or Marilyn Manson.

I have varied tastes...

purplemonkeydishwasher · 16/12/2008 13:14

i got into my friend's car the other day. she was listening to nursery rhymes but her DD wasn't in the car. made me glad we never listened to that crap.

we usually listen to the radio but every once in a while we are ORDERED to put on fratellis or kings of leon by our 3yo DS.

nice to know that other kids know the words to 'real' songs too!

MmeHereWeGoAWassailLindt · 16/12/2008 13:23

We have a couple of kids CDs but only for long journeys and not all the time. We quite like the German kids music by Rolf Zuckowski as the tunes are good and the lyrics quite funny. At the moment we are listening to the Xmas cd and DS loves it to sing along. "Glooooooooooooooooooooria, in dadada deo"

They also enjoy Seal, Abba, hootie and the blowfish, and Runrig. DD was only about 2 when I put on the Runrig live in Loch Lomond CD. She would shout "Are you READY!" from the back seat.

ThomcatIsForLifeNotJustForXmas · 16/12/2008 13:25

Have a couple of children's type CDs - The Once were Giants and stuff like that, kids music that adults can just about bear.

However I am currently educating my chuildren all about The Beatles.

DD2 is 3 this week and for the last few months has been asking for the Beathes every day and can tell me who all teh members are and both her and DD1 now know some of the words etc! DD1 asks for it "louder mummy, louder"!

Iloveautumn · 16/12/2008 13:30

If I possibly can I alternate between radio 4 and radio 1 and certainly when ds was only 1 (now 2 and a half) I could get away with that. But he is a terrible traveller and so I usually put his cd on as it keeps him quiet.

I think it depends so much on the child - all very well to be anti kids cds but when the alternative is a whinging child then the cd is preferable! (Believe me!)
