I felt soooooooooo guilty the other day as in a md rush I gave my 3 year old fresh pasta nad pesto followed by strawberries, grapes and apple slices....After watching JO's new programme I feel totally relieved.

Im not a great cook but would never, never, never feed my 3 year old kebab meat or chips and cheese from a take a way!!!!

agree with what fio said above

PoorOldEnid · 01/10/2008 10:52

lol that too

QueenMary · 01/10/2008 10:53

I was being ironic fio ffs.

This whole thread and the Jamie Oliver programme makes my blood boil. Any excuse to beat people over the head just because they don't conform to what we like to think of the norm in our cosy middle class lives when most of us have no idea how shit their lives are.

"I think that part of the joy of being a middle class mum is the thrill of judging those less able or equipped to be reasonable parents."

yes that was the tone of the programme I thought

I am relentlessly middle class and am very lucky, educated, comfortabley off yada yada and I felt bloody awful being asked to judge those people who I am sure are great parents

BabyBaby123 · 01/10/2008 10:55

omg who's post was that? some thrill!

lots of healthy country children here - lots children of struggling tenant farmesr or agricultural workers (ie poor) - lots of fresh veg, eggs etc

mind you I suppose its not the inner city, they can run and grow stuff etc

nailpolish · 01/10/2008 11:03

lack of transport has a lot to do with it i think
no car - no money for bus - heavy bags of shopping

PoorOldEnid · 01/10/2008 11:03

surely it was about lack of education and family than lack of money?

that poor woman didnt have the kind of cosy mum that passed on recipes and no education to speak of

we can all feed our kids properly on £70 a week suerly

nailpolish · 01/10/2008 11:05

she said she didnt have any money to get the bus to the shops
she said she had a lot of debt problems

but yes having someone to show you how to cook is obv important too

nailpolish · 01/10/2008 11:05

£70 inc for bills too not just food

PoorOldEnid · 01/10/2008 11:12

oh ok

but I've seen people on here feed their kids on a lot less

and where was that womans feckless bloke? cant he put a fecking pinny on useless bastard

shoedweller · 01/10/2008 11:12

That's a really good point about transport.

Elibean · 01/10/2008 11:12

'I think Surestart should get invoved and teach young mums how to cook'

Our local Homestart asked us what we wanted to see at the family groups and I suggested cookery classes. Apparently they used to do them, teaching young mums how to cook very basic healthy meals. Things like chopping some veg and sausages up and chucking some tinned tomatoes and a few herbs over it. It got stopped because of all the food safety regulations they they had to meet.

It's really about motivation, nothing to do with class. None of them could be bothered. The working class mum claimed poverty but had enough money to smoke and buy takeaways 4 times a week (something I could never have afforded on benefits or on a wage). The mniddle class mums were claiming they didn't have time.

If you care about what you are eating you make the time, and you budget. I love good food, so I find ways of affording it such as buying in bulk. I make the time by cooking in bulk.

If you prefer the taste of a kebab or a packet of crisps then all the education in the world isn't going to make the faintest bit of difference.

ChopsTheDuck · 01/10/2008 11:15

heavy bags of shopping - get a bloody trolley. I have a lovely granny trolley with flowers all over it that I take to markets or wembley to stock up on cheap ingredients. It's another excuse.

NotCod · 01/10/2008 11:16

i did LAUGH at her SMOKING!!!!

PoorOldEnid · 01/10/2008 11:16

agree about the motivation

PoorOldEnid · 01/10/2008 11:16

lol have just read the OP

lolol

NotCod · 01/10/2008 11:17

i do agree
a lot of it is down to uter laziness

wehn middle classes feel lazy they may go out
htis lot have disgusting lookign takeaways

was htinking today i haevnt had a takeaway for over a year

nailpolish · 01/10/2008 11:18

the only thing i couldnt understand was the wee boy drinking a can of fanta
besides how shit fanta is - its really expensive to buy cans of fizzy juice
asda do diluting juice for pennies

Megglevache · 01/10/2008 11:18

Didn't her fella run a cafe?
