foo, you are much more sensible than I. Dd does say I am lovely (ds is far more of a silver-tongued cavalier), but she usually adds, "and squidgy" on the end which ruins the effect.

Fimbo · 26/09/2008 13:45

My 10yr old doesn't want me picking her clothes anymore - I am bereft.

I saw a beautfiul toddler dress the other day and felt sad as she would have looked gorgeous if she had been 3.

Mind you ds hates t-shirts and wants to wear shirts all the farking time.

Ah, I do let dd choose her outfits...from clothes I have bought her or we have bought together
I just reserve the right of veto for HSM tat etc

Not yet - she's only 3 but she is a bit of a tomboy and I've found myself starting to say "let's wear a skirt today".

I have a friend who only has boys and she has a theory that mothers of teenage girls all end up dressing like their dds - or trying to, and failing miserably. Hope that doesn't happen to me.

Aitch - you're right, fathers have NO IDEA how to dress little girls.

My dd is 9 so this may be too young for what you are after but here is the low down. There is no uniform at her school btw. She is beautiful in my eyes but realistically pretty average in the eyes of others!

I like her to look good, but also to feel comfortable and not have to worry about not being able to do things because of what she is wearing. I also want her to have some freedom of choice about her clothes if she wants it (up until a year ago she would wear anything I chose as long as it was comfy).

She has a classic bob haircut that gets cut regularly and I am happy to pay for this. I am also happy to buy loads of clothes for her - more than she needs.

As for looking as nice as her mates...that just doesn't come into it at all. I want her to look good and feel confident - her friends can look however they look! And as for looking the best, the kids are all different, the "best" just isn't a relevant concept. Maybe this will all change in a few years. Or maybe it would be different if they had uniform. I guess it is certainly important to me for my dd to look her best rather than the best, but not to the point of being prissy & impractical! But if her clothes combinations are not what I would choose, so be it.

dd 13 has chosen a look for herself
i have as little to do with it as posible

the difficlut part was when she was 10/11 and started hating the clothes i bought for her- was aiming for a slightly cute French preppy look

she responded by adopting skulls as her preferred motif

Cappuccino · 26/09/2008 13:49

I can't be tossed

peanutbutterkid · 26/09/2008 13:49

DD (7) doesn't care much how she looks, yet. I wish she did because we have arguments about her hair (generally goes to school unbrushed). So most days she looks like she's been dragged thru a hedge backwards.
I myself rather closely resemble the hedge .

ghosty · 26/09/2008 13:49

Cod, no I didn't shop actually. I hate shopping. Shopping may well be shit in Oz but I don't do it here either . If I need something I go and find it ... other than that I don't shop. sorry.
I did try to look for a 'Zara' out of curiosity but there isn't one in Chichester so I couldn't be arsed.

foothesnoo · 26/09/2008 13:49

I would veto age-inappropriate midriff-baring tat, plus anything embazoned with horrid logos. So dd does choose, but I set some parameters.

MArina I refuse to believe you're an old hag. Like the sound of ds's Hannon-ish tendencies.

Guadalupe · 26/09/2008 13:50

No. The girls on the carpet in the morning are a sea of pink and lilac and dd is not bothered about colours so she is often green, therefore I think she looks the best.

Cappuccino · 26/09/2008 13:51

whatever you put dd2 in she looks like a grubby urchin

she had a v expensive dress we had to buy once when she wet herself spectacularly in a poncy market town

still = grubby urchin

PoorOldEnid · 26/09/2008 13:51

well I did feel relieved yesterday when I realised that if dd1 did get v greasy hair as a teen I could have it highlighted

is that the kidn of think you mean?

Cappuccino · 26/09/2008 13:52

dd1 has an odd-shaped head due to CP

and big ears (dunno why re the ears)

I am pleased she has wavy hair

Cappuccino · 26/09/2008 13:53

enid you are meant to be greasy at some point

it is rite of passage

Thinking about it I got some Joules stuff for my dd this autumn and she looks 10 times better in it than their catalogue models and this makes me feel well smug.

Cod you have missed out bigtime on being able to style little girls, sorry but you would have loved it if you had got the sort of girl who will wear whatever you choose for them so you can become a styling guru.

LaTrucha · 26/09/2008 13:59

I'm convinced DD 9 months would be comfier in a sleepsuit all day but I do dress her in 'outfits'. It does make me happy when people say she looks nice. And I do get a kind of itchy feeling if something's not quite matching, or if it has a bit of mashed veg on it.

Hate many baby clothes though esp slogans / characters and pinkpinkpinkpinkpinkpinkpink - although DD does on occasion where shades of rose.

And yet I tell myself I don't care, she's just 'well turned out'.

LIAR!
