I am desperate to give ds a dummy -but am resisting for the same reason i breast feed for ages....

social stigma

dp says there is none attached to dummies but i disagree and feel i will be chastised by the chattering classes if I succumb, thoughts please

be gentle - i am very post natal with a two week old!

I'm sure people across all social classes give dummies. I tried with DS and DD but neither were interested. Not sure I'm posh though .

RubySlippers · 01/08/2008 20:35

it is not crack cocaine ...

My poshest friend gives her DD3 a dummy.
I didn't give DS2 a dummy for precisely the reason you describe, fear of other people's opinions.

notnowbernard · 01/08/2008 20:36

Never thought of it in that way before

cocolepew · 01/08/2008 20:36

Yes they do. Only the right name of course

BoysAreLikeDogs · 01/08/2008 20:36

Butterfly, both mine had dummies, to get over that desperate sucky stage.

DS1 - til 8 months
DS2 - til 4 months

I would pop it out as soon as they had fallen asleep.

HTH

FrazzledFairyFay · 01/08/2008 20:37

I am a little bit posh and my DCs have dummies

LyraSilvertongue · 01/08/2008 20:37

I know lots of posh people who have given their babies dummies.

Bluebutterfly · 01/08/2008 20:37

I am exceedingly posh and I gave ds a dummy.

Although if you refer to it as a "soother" it will display your posh credentials much better

2point4kids · 01/08/2008 20:37

coco thats not posh, its chav

I am very posh and both mine have had dummies (us upper classes favour avent orthodontic ones ya)

I noticed on holiday (at a rather posh 5 star hotel) that practically all of the Southern Europeans seem to use dummies. Mus.t be less of a stigma there (if indeed there is one here - I think there is a little bit tbh)

stitch · 01/08/2008 20:38

oh, i know butterfuyly isnt a troll, but recently everyone on mn is starting silly threads to get people riled up. remember the pink bride one?

princessglitter · 01/08/2008 20:38

I am very posh and gave dd1 a dummy, but only in secret.

SorenLorensen · 01/08/2008 20:40

The only place I have ever found snobbiness about dummies is MN - both mine had one.

yah yah lots of vairy vairy posh people

FSID now say it can reduce the risk of cot death so all social boundaries broken

my dear mama thinks it is not at all cricket to give the baby a dummy, but then she thinks I should be giving the baby rosehip syrup and/or sloe gin so I've stopped listening

You're not a troll, you've just mastered the art of the attention grabbing title.
I recognise your name.
Congratulations by the way. On both your thread title and your new baby.

Some people will judge you for giving a dummy, some won't. You have to decide whether you care.

mummyloveslucy · 01/08/2008 20:42

Don't worry what other people think. If you want him to have a dummy then give him one. There are a lot of things that look common on babys. Earings, slogan T shirts, jeens, trainers etc. I don't think dummies are in the same catogory.

ButterflyMcQueen · 01/08/2008 20:42

this is what i need to hear!

justaboutgrownup - accent !!!

i know it's so silly and shallow to care what other people think - sadly i do

( if i were going to troll i would do something wilder)

must be ok.

EachPeachPearMum · 01/08/2008 20:43

Truly posh people pay no regard to what others might think.
