I am desperate to give ds a dummy -but am resisting for the same reason i breast feed for ages....

social stigma

dp says there is none attached to dummies but i disagree and feel i will be chastised by the chattering classes if I succumb, thoughts please

be gentle - i am very post natal with a two week old!

I'm incredibly posh and I used dummies with dd and ds. Like LIttlelapin, the colic hit when dd was little and my goodness the dummy was a lifesaver.
My mother went from complete antipathy towards dummies to thinking that they were the best thing ever when she saw how much it helped dd to settle when her colic was a problem.
UNlike LL's ds though, dd didn't lose the habit until she was about 3. Only for bedtime and naps at that stage though, and I think it's no coincidence that the day she gave up dummies was the day that she stopped reliably having an afternoon nap.
DS seems less attached to his.

Eachpeareachplum you are wise!

Both of mine had/have dummies.Am more concerned with dc's than other peoples opinions.Tis very lower/upper middle to be worrying about what other people think

constancereader · 01/08/2008 20:47

my ds had a dummy

but there are NO photographs at all of him using the dummy, I used to steal it from him at the first sign of a camera.

does that make aspirationally posh?

AbstractMouse · 01/08/2008 20:48

Do people really not give dummies because they think it's common? How sad.

Fair enough if you are worried about teeth etc, but....really.

pooka · 01/08/2008 20:48

Oh and I didn't and don't use them in secret.
And no concerns whatsoever about their teeth or their speech.

chipkid · 01/08/2008 20:49

yes posh people do but they are called dodies!

ButterflyMcQueen · 01/08/2008 20:49

dooby does it?

i am a horror for caring what folk think...goes to the roots of every lunch box and name tag i sew on!

You're right that Southern Europeans give dummies much more, at least the Spanish do. There seems to be no stigma attached to it at all. I suppose they just see them as helpful tools.

LyraSilvertongue · 01/08/2008 20:50

I tried to give my two dummies but they just wouldn't take them.

ButterflyMcQueen · 01/08/2008 20:50

Do what ever you feel is right for you and your babies, nothing else matters. It is hard though I know. To be a mother you have to become quite thick skinned. There are always people that will critisise or disaprove. Sod them !!!

OrmIrian · 01/08/2008 20:52

I'm sure they do. Find a posh person and ask them.

ButterflyMcQueen · 01/08/2008 20:53

I did Omrian

she said give a muslin and he can learn to suck it!

I sound posh, but am not particularly (just where I was brought up). My two DSs didn't take to dummies.
I'm now in Germany and am frowned upon for not using one on my DS2 (5 months). I'm actually embarrassed. They have accessories and everything for their dummies! Took DS2 for his checkup at the baby doctor, and she was appalled that I had no dummy to give him when he cried during the tests. I refuse to give in, but the pressure to use dummies is everywhere in Germany.

ButterflyMcQueen · 01/08/2008 20:53

sorry ormIrian

Did you really mean to phrase your question that way?

2 of mine had dummies. They helped them. Weaned off, cold turkey, at 6 months. No worries.

ButterflyMcQueen · 01/08/2008 20:54

gosh thequietone I wonder why ( considers move to Munich)

onepieceoflollipop · 01/08/2008 20:57

Personally I hate dummies. Sadly my dd2 doesn't share my opinions and she loves her dummies. (sleep times only though. ) No idea if I am "posh" or not - I suspect not!

She is almost a year old and if she yells in the night she indicates to us that she wants milk, rather than dummy by handing it over. If we try and replace it (i.e. because we are knackered) she chucks it on the floor in a decisive manner and shrieks until we listen properly.

thequietone · 01/08/2008 20:57

The children here are so...pacified. They look at my DS1 in shock because he doesn't sit still and keep quiet. OK, going off the point here.
Dummies are the absolute norm here near Munich. I am a rare phenomenom and it does not go down well, even with the paediatrician. I find this amazing...
