VOTE what age you consider old enough for ear piercing?

Sorry if this has been done to dead but most links talks about babies. I agree with most of them that it's cruel. Personally (I think) I feel if a child is older enough to understand it hurts and older enough to look after their own ear fine. I would say that was about 6-7 (depends on the child).
Just intrested in people's view as my mother and father don't like piercings at all so I grew up with a very strong view on piercings. But then started seeing 7-8 with ears pierced at dd school, then dd 7 asking for hers to be done made me really think about it. But their is still a small part of my the programming from childhood their going not till she's 16-18.

  1. which is the start of secondary school in Scotland
Poppychick · 23/07/2008 21:11

I let my DD have her toe nails painted from time to time. I think it's just another form of role play really like dressing up in Mummy's shoes / bags etc.

no earlier than 12.
Preferable 14 - 16

Have no problemw ith the odd bit of nail polish from time to time - that is temporary, and causes no pain. Plus we use thr peel/rub off nail polish for DD and it only lasts a few short hours.

bythepowerofgreyskull · 23/07/2008 22:02

senior school age, but prefer 13-15

blowsy · 23/07/2008 22:06

11 or 12. I had mine done for 12th bday, after monumental battle with parents.

Anna8888 · 23/07/2008 22:06

Love the little bit about nail polish we seem to have gained. Yes my dd does have nails painted for time to time.

13 for girls
NO for boys

lexcat · 24/07/2008 16:30

Why is it your saying no to boys but was in town to day and only saw boys with ears done. Plus the only 2 children in dd class with ears pierced are boys.
Personally don't really like it on boys it just an observation.

I think I was 15, that seems about right. No earlier than 13, telling them to wait till their real teens seems easy to implement.

paolosgirl · 26/07/2008 13:39

I've agreed to 10 for DD - double figures kind of seemed right.

DS's will have to wait until I pass away and then get their's done over my corpse.

SqueakyPop · 26/07/2008 13:43

My DD is 11 and has not mentioned ear pearcing. I won't until she does. My mum had my ears pearced when I was 10 and it wasn't something that ever crossed my mind. I don't wear earings to this day.

littledudesmummy · 26/07/2008 21:10

I'm quite surprised, nay shocked, at the high ages quoted here. I was 7 and it was the 70's when I had mine done, after much nagging to quite strict middle class parents. I don't have a daughter but if I did I would use the age I had mine done as guide. It's never nice or cool on boys, in my opinion.

viggosluvvverrrrr · 26/07/2008 22:41

When old enough to ask, then add 4 years.

Niecie · 26/07/2008 22:49

I had mine done just before secondary and it was fine. I was old enough to look after them myself and to take the earrings out for PE etc.

Does it hurt? - I don't remember it hurting at all. My ears felt a bit hot, that's all.

MamaHobgoblin · 26/07/2008 22:50

Well, ok, 14 at the youngest.

(I had mine done at uni, aged 19. Heh. My dad still had a go at me!)

Elkat · 27/07/2008 00:24

I think the summer before they start secondary school - so about 11.

solo · 27/07/2008 00:26

Never for boys.

7-8 for girls.

ghosty · 27/07/2008 00:35

10 - 12

lexcat · 27/07/2008 09:16

niecie "Does it hurt?" Ask different people and you get different views. Yes a bit few for about 1/2 min then I remember my ear burning for at least 1hour but that was more of a discomfort then really hurting. On the other hand my sister remembers it really hurt and she wouldn't have had then if she knew.
Friend told me her ds didn't even flinch.
