VOTE what age you consider old enough for ear piercing?

Sorry if this has been done to dead but most links talks about babies. I agree with most of them that it's cruel. Personally (I think) I feel if a child is older enough to understand it hurts and older enough to look after their own ear fine. I would say that was about 6-7 (depends on the child).
Just intrested in people's view as my mother and father don't like piercings at all so I grew up with a very strong view on piercings. But then started seeing 7-8 with ears pierced at dd school, then dd 7 asking for hers to be done made me really think about it. But their is still a small part of my the programming from childhood their going not till she's 16-18.

When they leave Primary School - that is what we have told DD although I wish she would wait as hate kids with pierced ears.

summer after year six, if they are capable of dealing with the cleanliness themselves. for girls
for boys, age 35

All very intresting anyone differ from 11-13. May be you like as young as babys or may be you are like my parents and anti piercing of any type. As my dad puts it 'if god meant us to have holes in our ear we would have been born with them'. My mother always says 'what wrong with clip ons'.

DD won't be getting hers done until 16 if at all (several people on here have said the same thing IIRC). I don't see anything wrong with doing them earlier. My ears didn't take well to being pierced and if the same thing happens to DD I want it to be something she chose to do as a (nearly) adult.

LittleMoosh · 22/07/2008 12:45

I was 9 when I had mine done. I think 8+ as long as the child understands and wants them done. I have seeing babies with earrings (disgusting)

14 in our family. I'm the oldest of 20 cousins and I set the precedent, so I'd better keep it up with dd!

Do little girls still desparatey want their ears pierced then? I wondered if it wasn't a bit old fashioned these days.

lexcat · 22/07/2008 13:26

dd does and is will wear clip on's till her ears go red and sting. Even then she's not that keen on taking them off. Normal it me who takes them off because her ear look so sore.
Might be old fashioned to want just you ears piercing. But as far as I'm consider that all till she old enough not to need my consent which is 16 but some piercings are 18.

Not before secondary school, preferably not before 14 yrs (and boys never).

Rhian82 · 22/07/2008 14:25

I'd say secondary school. I was never interested in having mine done, didn't till I was 21 (and that was only because I'd started going out with DH and he wanted to buy me earrings!)

janeite · 22/07/2008 14:29

11 - end of Yr 6/beginning of Yr 7 - acts as a nice sense of transition for them.

AnAngelWithin · 22/07/2008 14:31

i had mine done for my 10th birthday

SummatAnNowt · 22/07/2008 16:06

Probably about 11 or 12.

As a parent I intend to tell my child (boy or girl) that the magic age is higher than I would allow and they will feel like they've had a victory if they can argue me down

I was pleased with myself that I argued my mum down to 15 from 16! And then worked on her with my sis so my sis could have hers done at 13.

sfxmum · 22/07/2008 16:08

I'd probably choose 10.

But wouldn't mind 8 or 9.

fishnet · 22/07/2008 16:14

I had mine done when I was 4. I vividly remember getting a strawberry split for being brave. I haven't grown up with trauma memories nor did I walk around in childhood looking like a mini hooker.

Having said that, if I had a daughter I wouldn't be happy about it until about aged 10.

Thank god for sons!

Slubberdegullion · 22/07/2008 16:20

I'll start with 16, but am fully accepting that will be beaten down to a fair middle ground of 12.

11 is my limit.

mamasaid · 22/07/2008 16:23

13-14 .
