Is this a really bad idea?

We have tried potty training before a few months ago but DS1 treated the potty like an optional extra.

We have been building up to him not wearing nappies after his birthday and he seems to understand.

Does anyone have any advice/wisdom/experiences to share?

I should add that he did actually last poo in his pants on Thursday afternoon, and has not been holding it in since Tuesday!

Argh. Pride comes before a fall: after nearly 2 weeks without a single accident, ds1 has now started weeing all over the shop - 3 'accidents' yesterday, and two so far today. I think he's doing it to get a rise out of us, so we're gritting our teeth to try and stay calm but it's sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo annoying when he was doing so brilliantly. Have just had to dismantle his car seat to clean the cover after he peed all over it, so heaven knows how to put it back together again.

He starts a new nursery this week too, so no doubt the trauma will have us back to square one in no time.

Argh, I say again.

Hope everyone else progressing well.

Ds did well today. We were stuck in traffic and he fell asleep. I was convinced he would wet himself while sleeping but he didn't He also seems fine about using other loos which is good. Just need to work on the poos.

We are going on holiday next friday to Holland and are going by car. Am debating whether to put him in a nappy for the journey there...hmmm...

simpson, why don't you try putting him on loo every 20 mins for about 5 mins if you can and see can you catch poo that way. Then make a huge song and dance if he hits the target?

simpson · 11/08/2008 14:19

Bobswendy - I think I am going to have to do what you suggest. DS is going to stay overnight st my mum's tomorrow night (lets hope there aren't too many accidents) then when he comes I think I will give it a go.

simpson · 12/08/2008 17:49

Have off loaded DS to my mums for the night and he has not done a poo for 2 days. Lets hope everything is ok

Washersaurus · 18/08/2008 21:42

Has everyone doing so well they have stopped posting on here now?

Well, we are still struggling with getting DS to poo. He has been holding them in for days at a time and then is too scared to go - this results in many many accidents

I'm not sure where to go from here, I think we may be headed for the doctors at this rate. Even when he does try to poo on the potty/toilet he just can't do it.

Tell me you have all cracked it and have lots of useful advice to offer

hi washersaurus. Things are good here. Although we did go away for 5 days to my mums in Ireland and he had an accident on 4 of those 5 days. However, we're back now and all seems ok again.

I definitely think you should take him to doc. And have you asked your HV for advice. My only advice is to feed him the foods that keep him nice and "soft". Lots of fruit for him

Let us know how you are getting on.

simpson · 29/08/2008 20:59

Washersaurus - things NOT going well here at all. Have just got back from 2 weeks in Holland which was lovely but the poo situation is now getting out of hand. Wees pretty much cracked a few accidents on holiday when not near loo etc but poos ALWAYS in pants. He now opens door and goes to "strain" in privacy of garden and you only know he has done something coz you smell it

Washersaurus · 30/08/2008 21:39

Oh Simpson, sorry you have been struggling too, that sounds so familiar....However, I have a confession to make .

DS1 has been holding in his poos for days at a time (upto 4 days ). The result of this was lots of poo stained pants and also lots of weeing (probably from the pressure on his bladder). I got absolutely fed up clearing up pooey pants every 5 minutes, and eventually I absolutely exploded in temper (admittedly not my finest hour of parenting and I have apologised to him).

The shock seems to have worked though and he has done EVERY single poo this week in the potty/toilet - without even telling me sometimes.

We've been out all day today in the car and around shops etc and he has stayed clean and dry all day, even having fallen asleep in the car. He seems so much happier now (and I am ecstatic that my hands no longer permanently smell of poo)

Washersaurus - I have told DS off too I get more annoyed that he does not tell me he has poo in pants than the pooing itself iyswim. By the time I realise/smell it there is a right old mess.

The plan of action is am going to try the potty as it might me easier for him to strain (sorry TMI)He also does not like doing a poo around anyone and will go into garden or upstairs but I am too busy with DD to notice

I do think this is my fault though as he hears me talking to DD saying she has done a smelly/dirty poo etc when I change her nappy. DH has even made up a song about it for her

On the plus side the wees are totally cracked. He goes upstairs without prompting you only know he has done a wee as clothes slightly askew

Washersaurus · 30/08/2008 22:40

I did find it difficult having DS2 in nappies whilst DS1 was potty training - it is hard to explain why it is OK for one to poo in his pants and not for the other to do it.

I didn't just tell him off though Simpson - I really really screamed at him, I was just so fed up and frustrated; I felt so terrible afterwards (I didn't want to scare him into using the potty). But we had done the talks and he said he understood he had to keep his pants clean and poo on the potty etc - and still I'd find him straining or smell the poo OR notice his tail 5 mins later. Also his behaviour and mood really deteriorated on days 3-5 of not pooing which made the whole thing even more stressful and tiring.

I'm sure your DS will crack it soon - I'm still bribing with cars at the moment.

OP posts:
simpson · 30/08/2008 23:07

I didn't just tell him off either, I shouted so loud I frightened DD Has made no difference though.

Think I might hit the pound shop for cars

Washersaurus · 30/08/2008 23:12

The pound shop cars didn't do the trick here, unfortunately DS1 has more expensive taste; only Disney Cars or Hot Wheels will do as incentives for him to stay clean and dry!

We also restarted the star chart and added an extra 'poo column' to each day. If he does poo he gets a BIG star sticker in the poo column . DH was unimpressed with my idea, but it seems to have helped.

OP posts:
simpson · 30/08/2008 23:21

Hmmmm think sticker chart might work He is 3 tomorrow so will not stress him too much as lots happening but will try on Monday. The good thing is he does not seem to hold in poos so don't have that problem at least. Although he has not done one today

Washersaurus · 30/08/2008 23:33

We have been printing out a picture of the Disney Car reward of the week for DS to colour in and sticking that to the top of the chart to remind him what he is trying for - looks a mess, but it is his.

OP posts:
simpson · 30/08/2008 23:43

Think I will google reward charts on net tomorrow there must be loads to print off, I hope!!

Think he would get pissed off if he could not colour straight away but might give it a go.

When he comes back from playgroup with a sicker on his clothes for tidying up etc he is vvvvvvvv proud, bless so he might just want stickers on him!!

Am going to have to be pro active over this I guess.

Washersaurus · 30/08/2008 23:46

Oh DS colours the pic in first and then it goes on the sticker chart - I'm not that mean .

I just draw our chart out each week onto 2 A4 sheets taped together and write the days of the week on it in different colours. I'm sounding quite creative now aren't I...if only you could see it.

OP posts:
simpson · 31/08/2008 00:02

Dohhh silly me!! With the colouring in!!

Sounds good quite constructive though DS good at talking about pooing in loo/potty etc while drawing.

Have a confession to make

DS seems to refuse to do poo in house, have just got back from 2 weeks in Holland which was fab apart from DH breaking collar bone which is a different story!! So I have to do everything with DCs.

I was feeding DD in highchair in Holland bedrooms are downstairs living space upstairs. I thought DS on balcony (totally safe) turns out he wasn't, had managed to open front door walk onto garden off road (not a main one thank God!!) to strain for poo as he won't do it in front of us. My mum found him after a 3 min panic
