Is this a really bad idea?

We have tried potty training before a few months ago but DS1 treated the potty like an optional extra.

We have been building up to him not wearing nappies after his birthday and he seems to understand.

Does anyone have any advice/wisdom/experiences to share?

hi girls,

hope all well. we are doing ok. Yesterday, NO wee wee accidents, and 1 poo in pants. Today (with distracting visitors LOL), one wee in pants, rest in loo, and poo in pants. So feel like wee wees are cracked, but don't know how to fix the poo in pants problem? Any ideas???????

Sounds like everyone is making progress, simpson, you are still in v early days and doing well.

Its so hard though isn't it?

Looking forward to hearing progress reports tomorrow.

This thread is a life saver, thanks.

funnypeculiar · 25/07/2008 23:21

Sounding good, everyone - esp no wee accidents, bobswendy!

Bouncy castle was fine thanks for asking - she did a HUGE wee before the party, then right at the end when I was helping clear up, went a bit glassy eyed and then told me she'd done a poo (could have caught it if i'd been more on the ball - darn.

Not one of her most successful days all round, but I still broadly feel like we're on an upwards tangent...

Tomorrow ... going to West Wittering beach for the day - I'm really not taking this 'stay in for a week' thing seriously enough

simpson · 26/07/2008 11:09

BobsWendy - Do you still have to tell your DS to go to loo or does he tell you he needs to go? This is the bit that is going to be hardest to crack I think

Funnyperculiar - We are going out this afternoon too. No where exciting though, just to buy some paint to do front of house. Will brave taking DS armed with plastic sheet under buggy. Glad there was no accident in bouncey castle

Hope everyone has good day...

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!

Had a bad day today no wees in toilet 3 wees in pants. He says he needs to go to toilet, take him up and... nothing

Feels like 1 step forward and 3 steps back.

midnightexpress · 26/07/2008 20:22

funnypeculiar - hope not caught it literally .

Not a bad day here - one wee on (brand new ) floor, mini poo in pants (spotted with the glassy look!) followed immediately by a ginormous one in the loo, so count that as a success as that's the bit we're finding hard to crack.

But generally we're just going about our business and managing to go to the park and the shops and so on without too much trauma, though I suspect that poos are being held in for some reason I am not able to fathom. Discussed this with ds1 today and he told me he doesn't like doing poos on the toilet because 'they (the poos) are smelly'. But I don't think he really knows what he's talking about entirely, so not too sure what to make of this.

solo · 26/07/2008 20:31

I toilet trained my Ds on his 2nd birthday. He was dry/clean during the day within 4 days and using the toilet within 2 weeks. My Dd is 19 months and doesn't care if she sits in a dirty nappy, so although I'd like to start toilet training her now, I'm not sure she's ready. I think it'll be a potty first anyway as when I sat her on the loo she screamed blue murder!
Any thoughts on this early training mummies please?

funnypeculiar · 26/07/2008 21:03

LOL, no not literally

Well we had a WONDERFUL day on the beach & dd did really well - no accidents on the journey (1.5 hours each way) and only one wee on the sand - then messed things up by pooing in the bath!

Midnight express - I think dd has a poo ishoo too. She spent ages sitting on the toilet telling me she wanted a poo just before the bath, but obviously couldn't quite manage it - she's defn more erratic for her poos too. I haven't tried talking to her about what's driving it - good idea!

BobsWendy · 27/07/2008 13:38

hi girls

Well we've thrown caution to the wind and are out and about like normal, town, shopping centres, zoo, park etc. He's verrrry good for holding wee wees when he needs too, he only seems to have a wee wee accident in our garden

For the last three days, he's done all wee wees in loo, apart from 1 accident, but still all poors in pants???? , today we're getting better at watching the poo coming, so usually get him to the loo in time for some of it to go down the loo, I don't know whether thats progress or not, how am I going to sort out this poo issue?

Simpson, I ask a lot all day long, but I know when he starts fidgeting and then he usually shouts "wees coming!!" (it hasn't actually come out and we go to loo and he jumps on and wees happily. But I'm not going to stop asking for a loooooong time. But I'm definitely not asking as much as I used. Maybe just 4000 times a day now LOL!!! How did trip out go?

Nice one midnightexpress that you're getting out and about now too.

Well done funnypeculiar on the journey that was accident free!

Do you think another week and we'll all be sorted? Health Visitor was here on Thurs and she said to expect two weeks for it to be finished, we're entering our 2nd week now.... I want this to be over ... wail!!

simpson · 27/07/2008 14:00

Well after the rubbish day yesterday we have a had a major break through Told DS every time he did wee in toilet he gets one smartie and a poo he would get two smarties. This morning he said he needed wee and went up by himself. I got distracted by DD and then DS came downstairs clothes all the wrong way round and said he had done a wee

Well, just now he has done the same thing except unknown to him I followed him up the stairs and he was doing a wee Got off loo put clothes back on (for some reason he has to totally remove shorts and pants)and washed hands and came back down

Don't want to get my hopes up it could still go tits up. BobsWendy - we have now got same problem as you no poos in loo at all. Had another one in pants this morning.

DS seems to be able to hold it for 3/4 hours so have been to the shops, park a few times too

BobsWendy · 28/07/2008 21:01

great news simpson, you're flying it with him!

Today we had a "my poos coming!" shout and a poo in the loo, not the pants, hooray

But two wee wee accidents in the garden? Why oh why? We've been so good on the wee wees.

No trouble out and about, using public toilets etc., so thats fab.

Hows everyone else now?

simpson · 28/07/2008 21:34

bobsWendy - woo hoo a poo in the loo (do you like my little ditty there was totally by accident!!)

Don't want to tempt fate but think wees are pretty much cracked He will stop playing outside and say he needs wee and go upstairs. The only thing is he insists on taking ALL clothes off

Poo is going to be tough. All have been in his pants so far and he will not even tell me he has done one. Luckily he does not seem to poo very often

Washersaurus · 28/07/2008 21:44

Hi everyone, just back from our few days away camping. I am so pleased everyone seems to have cracked this potty/toilet training - we all sounded so desperate at one point last week

DH and I were busy packing the car up with camping things on Friday morning, which was due to be reward day, after around 20 accidents at midday we had a chat and all agreed that we would try harder to get The King on Saturday instead. The chat worked and DS1 tried really really hard and almost kept the same pants on all day , and has been clutching his special car ever since!

So we seem to have cracked wees, apart from the odd accident, but poo's are still an issue.

He even asked to go the potty whilst he was in bed with his night nappy on earlier, which was impressive. He seems so pleased with himself and is much happier than last week.

I'm not sure how much this whole process is going to end up costing us in cars though!

midnightexpress · 28/07/2008 22:07

Wow, everyone's doing so well - yeay to us all and our LOs .

DS1 doing well - we had a poo in the loo (woo hoo too!) today, and no wee accidents since Friday. But we did have an odd little drama this afternoon in which he wanted a wee/poo but didn't want to sit on the toilet - much wailing and gnashing of teeth. In the end I had to leave him perched there and tell him to give me a shout when he had calmed down and decided what he wanted to do. A couple of mins later all was calm again though and he's been fine since. I think he's just being 2.

Washersuarus, we too are bankrupting ourselves with rewards (though he does seem to have forgotten about the swimming pool, wey hey), though I have not yet had to resort to chocolate. Not yet.

Washersaurus · 28/07/2008 23:09

Wow, am jealous of the poo in the loo
(never thought I'd be typing that)

I may have to resort to chocolate to stop the late night pooing DS1 seems to have developed over the last 2 nights

funnypeculiar · 29/07/2008 12:58

Hallo all
Sounds like we're in the same place as many of you - wees are pretty much there, but poos are a whole other issue! She has managed a couple of poos on the toilet, but most of them still turn up in her pants. I've tried added bribery for poos, but still no luck. I'm off the trawl the archives for toilet poo threads

BobsWendy · 29/07/2008 13:05

the last two days poos have been in the loo... don't know what changed him, he just shouts "poo coming" now instead of the usual "wees coming!" and we run to the loo and the poo "pops out" as he says himself. But I'm probably at it a few more days than the restof you (day 11 now) so maybe sit tight and it'll happen in next couple of days? I didn't do anything different, just really talked to him about it, that being said, we could still be going back to accidents, I'm most certainly not confident yet. We're nearly there girls, all of us.

funnypeculiar · 29/07/2008 13:07

Well, there's LOADS of 'my dd/ds won't poo on the toilet threads ... so we're all normal (well, in that dept anyway )

general consensus in most is just wait Few also suggest going for a 'phased' approach (eg they ask for a nappy when the want to poo/put them on the toilet with a nappy on to poo etc0

interesting idea here - maybe not quite at this stage yet

midnightexpress · 29/07/2008 13:23

Just back from nursery where

DS1 did a poo on the toilet

Yeay!

That makes two in two days and no poo accidents since about Saturday.

I can't quite believe that I am on here discussing the minutiae of my son's bowel movements. Who'd a thunk?

Hope all are having a good day. Default setting of drizzle and grey skies has returned here - was so enjoying being outdoors in the sunshine.

simpson · 29/07/2008 14:09

well we are no where near getting poos in the toilet He does them in pants and then does not tell me so by the time I have realised/smelt it there is a terrible mess to clean up. Today is day 6 for us. Extra bribery might be the way to go for poos as 2 smarties are obviously not enough

funnypeculiar · 29/07/2008 14:25

of your ds' poo, midnight.

Gah, did I just say that?!?

simpson · 29/07/2008 16:17

Am probably tempting fate but have got rid of plastic sheet covering sofa as we seem to have wees cracked. No accidents yet today apart from the usual poo in pants.

BobsWendy · 30/07/2008 13:03

This thread has gone quiet. Does that mean everyone has cracked it?

I went to bed last night all smug and happy that we'd everything done and dusted, we'd had three days of poos in the loos, then this morning, I was in travel agent and the two ds's were playing in the play area when ds1 announced he'd done a poo in his pants (he had). Then we get home and he wees all over the floor. Am about to cry. Why oh why! I will never be smug again LOL!

Simpson hows the couch faring today??

Well done on poo in loo midnightexpress. How are you getting on funnypeculiar?

Washersaurus · 30/07/2008 14:21

Sorry I have been busy baking a birthday cake for DS2

DS1 is at nursery today so I have a break (hoorah), yesterday was terrible again with lots of accidents. He even wee'd himself in a shop and left a puddle for me to hastily mop up with baby wipes!

Still no sign of poo in the potty, we are offering all sorts of extra bribes to encourage him too!

funnypeculiar · 30/07/2008 14:35

Hello all
Well, wouldn't go so far as to say cracked it, bobswendy, but defo feel safe on the wees front. Luckily, dd seems to have pelvic floor muscles of steel, so can go all morning without a wee, so I'm not finding myself having to worry/think about wees at all. Still no poos in the peculiarloo, though....

Anyone seen washersaurus around/know how she's getting on?

midnightexpress · 30/07/2008 17:17

Hi all, still doing pretty well here - ds1 did the most ginormous poo you have ever seen this afternoon, on the loo - yeay! I saw him coming over all peculiar (that face, you know) and whisked him off in the nick of time - he'd still quite happily poo in his pants. In fact I'd say he'd rather poo in his pants for some reason, but no accidents here for quite a few days now, so I am beginning to hope we may have cracked it, just about.

Famous last words....
