Is this a really bad idea?

We have tried potty training before a few months ago but DS1 treated the potty like an optional extra.

We have been building up to him not wearing nappies after his birthday and he seems to understand.

Does anyone have any advice/wisdom/experiences to share?

ALL wees and poos in the toilet for the last few days, accident free zone here!!!

He even did a poo in the portaloo at the races yesterday with the DH - so proud!!

Think night time nappy is dry too, but afraid to chance it yet.

Hooray.... now if only ds2 would start walking... LOL!

Cleaning out poo from trousers is really starting to do my head in

Any tips anyone? H

He seems happy to have it in his pants till I realise. We have had no progress on poos at all but the good news is the wees seem to be cracked although how I am going to wean him off having a smartie everytime he does a wee is anyones guess

BobsWendy · 04/08/2008 12:51

is he pooing at the same time every day simpson? If so you could sit on loo around that time, with a bottle of water in hand (seems to help my boy) and wait it out with stories and singing.

Also, give him plenty of fruit and smoothies so that he needs to go often, that might help speed it up? HTH Simpson, its v frustraing.

BobsWendy - Unfortunately not at the same time and the good thing is he doesn't seem to poo that much. The are at least solid sorry if TMI but makes it easier to clean up!! Today he said he needed to wee went upstairs did wee and 2 mins later poo in pants think its just getting used to the feeling of going iyswim??

BobsWendy · 04/08/2008 13:14

lorry the fruit into him then. Should make the needing to poo more urgent and he might be more aware of sensation of it about to arrive?

simpson · 04/08/2008 13:21

bobswendy - think i will have to do that. Just don't want him to have so much fruit his poos go all gooey sorry TMI. But guess it will be worth it if he poos on the toilet

Washersaurus · 04/08/2008 21:09

I'm glad we aren't the only ones struggling with poo. We had a really good day today (out and about); DS1 staying in the same pair of pants right up until tea time. Unfortunately he needed a poo and only managed a little one on the potty and chose to do the rest later in his pants (twice).

WRT poo pants - I have the luxury(?) of being able to throw pooey pants in the nappy bucket with DS2's nappies. I haven't had poo in trousers to deal with thankfully, but would probably stick them in machine for a rinse before washing as usual.

Washersaurus - this pooing lark is really starting to get me down TBH. Have not ventured into town as planned for £ shop bribes as DD been ill. But DH took DCs out to park today for 2 hrs and he came back home ran up to the loo and did a massive wee He did a poo at 9 ish this morning and obviously had to change him but that has been the only change today. He does not poo at the same time each day and sometimes doesn't do one everyday. Am going to try BobsWendy's tip of lots of fruit to see if that helps. It doesn't annoy me the pooing in pants its that he doesn't tell me. When I ask if he has done a poo he says "yes" but won't tell me first so more mess to clean IYSWIM. Grrrr...

BobsWendy · 05/08/2008 19:45

any joy today simpson or does the fruit need a day or two to work

Still an accident free zone hooray

A different "problem" now though, he now wakes at 6.30am and shouts I need a wee, and we bring him, but then there's no getting him back to bed, this boy used to sleep till 8am... he's cranky and exhausted and frankly so I am - any ideas??

simpson · 05/08/2008 21:14

Bobswendy - Blardy typical DS refused to eat any fruit today We are going to RL friends house for the first time tomorrow I hope he doesn't have an accident

On the plus side he was out for nearly 3 hrs this afternoon and sat in hairdressers ok with no accidents, then came home and did a massive wee.

Does he need to do a wee then or is he saying it to get up earlier?

Washersaurus · 05/08/2008 22:36

Woohoo! DS did a poo on his potty this afternoon unprompted (admittedly after a few small pooey accidents this morning)

He has also been really good with using the potty for wees with only one small accident whilst I was preparing dinner. His confidence has definitely improved

I hope everyone else is noticing some improvement too

well done simpson and washersaurus.

Simpson, hope its a clean visit today LOL!

Yes Simpson, he does a massive wee then. I didn't give him his bedtime milk last night and he slept till after 8 this morning, hooray! So no fluids after 6pm right? Is anyone chancing taking off night time nappy? I know I should, but I'm afraid to.

simpson · 06/08/2008 09:26

BobsWendy - hopefully that has cracked the problem!! I can't believe 2 weeks ago we were saying we couldn't potty/toilet train and are now talking about nighttime training too DS's nappy is much lighter in the morning but there is still some wee so am gong to hold off but once the nappy is dry for about a week I will give it a go.

We are going to friends house today and her DS has one of those big trampolines in the back garden, lets hope he doesn't poo in it

midnightexpress · 06/08/2008 09:36

Hi all, sorry I haven't been on in a while and glad everyone's making progress. We're doing brilliantly here - DS1 has had one accident (a wee) in about 10 days, and he was almost on the toilet when he did that, so am really pleased. He definitely does fewer poos but at least they are going in the loo (2 yesterday - yeay!).

Am not even going to attempt night training yet - ds1's nappies are always full in the morning, and I've heard that many boys don't manage nights until they're closer to 4 or 5 so I'm not too stressed about it just now. He's such a good sleeper that the thought of starting to wake him up in the middle of the night for a pee and the consequent risk of waking the insomniac monster DS2 as well is too hideous to contemplate at the moment. Will rest on my laurels for a while.

simpson · 06/08/2008 19:28

Phew no accidents on trampoline and he even took himself upstairs and used their loo a few times. But within 10 mins of being home poo in pants

BobsWendy · 07/08/2008 08:11

thats great simpson that there was no poo on the trampoline!!

Have you tried talking to him about poo in toilet vs pants (at a time other than when he's just done a poo)? What does he say?

We've haven't had an accident in a week now, I'm overjoyed, I never thought we'd get this far. I've cut out bedtime milk and he sleeps normally and wakes with what I think is a completely dry nappy and wees in loo straight away. So do I bite the bullet and leave him in pants at night? Sooooo scared

simpson · 07/08/2008 09:59

God this house has to be obsessed with poo ATM!! Driving me mad.

DD (6mths) refuses her milk and only wants solids so she is totally bunged up uncomfortable and refusing water

DS only poos in pants and he knows he should poo in toilet. He said to me this morning "mummy I do poo in toilet tomorrow" which is his way of saying he doesn't want to do it??!! [hmm}

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I feel better now

midnightexpress · 07/08/2008 10:08

Simpson, sounds like ds1 on hair washing day. 'Let's wash it tomorrow mummy'.

Washersaurus · 07/08/2008 10:30

Well DS1 is currently holding in a poo - he hasn't been for one since our last little success; so we are probably expecting accidents at some point today.

DS2 has reverted back to a newborn neediness and is back co-sleeping and feeding in the night, as well as hanging off my trousers during the day - I am shattered....a woman on the edge!

DS1 started preschool this week at nursery which he was a bit scared about - they use a big toilet instead of potties. He has taken it in his stride, but is having around 3 wee accidents each day at the moment.

His night nappy is much lighter but still quite wet so I think we are a long way off night training, even though he wees on the potty before bed and as soon as he gets up. It sounds like you could give it a try though if you are feeling brave, Bobswendy!

Ds has not done a poo for 2 days and we need a trip to mothercare to buy DD a bumbo then trip to sainsburys. It could go horribly wrong

simpson · 08/08/2008 21:30

Well update.... Luckily DS did poo (in pants of course) just before we left to go out.

My mother has suggested DS do his poos in potty as maybe not so scary and easier to strain against iykwim.

What do you guys think??

Redwood · 09/08/2008 19:02

simpson, hi, not read all of thread but sounds familiar,my ds has been out of nappies for 4 weeks now but every day he has pooed in his pants! he refuses to sit on toilet to do a poo, but is happy for wees even though i have to tell him to go. I've tried bribery and star charts but just not interested. Any suggestions welcome.......

BobsWendy · 09/08/2008 19:05

no harm in trying simpson, you've nothing to lose... any joy with the fruit?

I dunno redwood, my ds is trained, started 3 weeks ago, and for first 2 weeks pooed in pants too, even when wees were mastered and then one day just stopped. He had pooed in his pants at a travel agent, the day before this, and maybe he saw how mortified I was? Since then, he's pooed in loo, like the wees. This is prob no help.

simpson · 09/08/2008 19:39

BobsWendy - he eats the fruit fine but has made no difference He poos at different times of the day so can't stick him on loo with book etc

Redwood - my mum was round today and suggested potty for poos easier to strain (sorry TMI) against maybe and not so scary?? I have yet to talk to DS about it.

Other than this idea I am totally stumped.
We have been toilet training for 2 weeks 3 days BTW

Washersaurus · 09/08/2008 20:50

Well DS1 eventually did his massive poo today - I caught him doing his poo face and shooed him off to his potty (just in time).

The problem is when he is holding in these poos, he keeps wetting his pants too. It is just a bit of wee each time, but very annoying indeed to have to keep changing him!

Simpson/Redwood; We have one of those big sturdy lidded potties that turns into a step and toilet seat; it has handles for DS to grip - which he seems to like.

We have a wedding to go to tomorrow afternoon, am dreading the constant toilet visits. I have the change bag packed with various outfits just in case
