Is this a really bad idea?

We have tried potty training before a few months ago but DS1 treated the potty like an optional extra.

We have been building up to him not wearing nappies after his birthday and he seems to understand.

Does anyone have any advice/wisdom/experiences to share?

Hi all

BobsWendy - sofa good No wee accidents for several days now, but the poo is a different story. Luckily DS does not seem to poo every day so have been free of accidents today

I made a point today of not asking DS if he needed the loo at all as I was beginning to sound like a stuck record and he went upstairs by himself and did the business everytime.

Funnypeculiar - My Ds is the same and seems to go hours inbetween wees despite drinking loads.Wish my pelvic floor was as good

Am going to the pound shop in the next day or so to buy cheap cars, crayons etc to use as extra bribes for poos on the loo!!

funnypeculiar · 30/07/2008 19:25

Sorry, just noticed washersaurus posted just before I did (unless I took a looonnggg time composing my post

And may I just perform a quick victory dance? TWO poos on the toilet today - ok, one was rabbit dropping size, but the other was a goody . Strangely enough, dd was obviously rather embaressed about it - didn't want us (me & ds) in the room, and was very put out by ds' whooping & applause. Not sure where that's come from (open toilet door policy in this house) - but hey, here's hoping we've cracked it!

midnightexpress · 30/07/2008 20:57

May I join your victory dance fp? We had two on the loo too! Caught ds doing The Face again after dinner and whisked him off 'I've already done it mummy, I've already done it!', but he hadn't.

DS2 processed in after us, sat himself down on ds1's potty (in his nappy) then stood up and said 'Well done DS2!' and off he went. Bless.

Grrr we are 2 steps back again today I feel like crying. He pooed in his pants on his way home from nursery, pooed in his pants again just as I was serving up tea and whilst DS2 was screaming (poor birthday boy), THEN to top it off pooed in his night nappy, put his hands in it and wiped it all over his bed .

I hate to say that I lost my cool, so did DH. Have probably set our cause back even further now as a result - boo hiss!

He seemed to have had around 4 changes of pants/clothes at nursery today which is pretty average at the moment as he gets involved with games/toys and doesn't like to leave them. He does still seem to wee hundreds of times each day too.

Sorry to stop by with my doom and gloom, glad you are all doing so well. Shake your supportive pompoms this way please!

Well done your ds!

funnypeculiar · 30/07/2008 22:16

Oh washersausrus, sorry to hear you & ds are having a rubbish time - it's impossible NOT to be frustrated by lack of progress sometimes isn't it - it just feels personal

Was it ds2's birthday today - hope he managed to have a good day amoungst the sh*t

simpson · 30/07/2008 22:30

Wahersaurus - sorry today was not so good The only reason we are doing so well in the Simpson household is because DS only seems to do a poo every other day.

I know exactly what you mean by losing cool as yesterday I got cross with DS not because he had done a poo but because he hadn't told me.Grr...(in pants obviously) We have not managed one poo in loo yet

Shakes pom poms ... tomorrow will be a better day... Does little jig to cheer Washersaurus up!!

Washersaurus · 30/07/2008 22:41

Ahh thanks guys! I'm sure DS1 takes our disappointment really personally so will probably try harder tomorrow (fingers crossed).

DS2 is 1yo today - it feels like much longer than a year I can tell you . He celebrated by pulling my laptop off the table earlier and now my hard drive is rattling. I have been busy backing up ready for when it inevitably dies on me

Maybe DS1 was competing for attention because of the birthday celebrations

i have just started my 2 and 1/2 year old ( well 3 in october)

she is off to her day care as she only goes each thursday and i hope they keep it up with her as she managed 3 wee's in her potty yesterday which isnt bad for first day is

we use stickers and her nanny has told her if she gets 5 stickers then she will get her a treat and i also bought her some fifi panties and she thought it was great.

good luck everyone else

midnightexpress · 31/07/2008 09:38

washersaurus, sorry you're having a tough time. Like FP says, it feels so personal when it goes wrong. I hope today will be better.

DS1 managed to pull down a full-length mirrored cabinet this morning that we had unfixed from the wall to redecorate. Mirror and cabinet in a million pieces. Fortunately I am not superstitious.

DS managed to keep his bowels in control, but DP and I nearly cr*pped ourselves. All unharmed though, thank god.

simpson · 31/07/2008 12:29

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh

Another poo in pants how are we going to crack this????

The thing that annoys me is he doesn't even tell me he has gone in his pants. Seems quite happy to sit in it for ages till someone realises.

BobsWendy · 31/07/2008 13:50

ah girls

Think positive!!!!!!! It can and will be done!!

I hope you are feeling better washersaurus, how is today going?

Boo about the mirror midnight express, that is a disaster. At least he didn't poo the pants

Today we went swimming and afterwards, he needed a wee desperate and we had to wee in a bush on the side of the road. I've hit a new high on the "we have no shame"-ometer! He weed three times in the toilet when we got home in quick succession, so I thought no need to ask for another few mins and then he weed on the floor . But he pooed in the toilet a few mins later so all is forgiven.

midnightexpress · 31/07/2008 14:53

Simpson, I guess it is logical to a small person - he's been happily pooing in his nappy all this time and never needed to say anything, so it's quite an adjustment to have to do it on the loo and tell you if he's had an accident.

I find I have to catch him at it to get him to poo on the loo atm. If I see him with The Face I can usually get him to the loo in time, but so far he's not so great at letting me know it's coming. It's funny, isn't it - I'd have thought you'd be much more conscious of a poo on the way than a wee, yet he can always tell me he needs a wee.

BobsWendy we too are becoming experts in al fresco peeing - after some experimentation with leaning and the like I have found that trousers round the ankles and crouching is the best way to avoid a mess.

Washersaurus · 31/07/2008 22:25

Hi everyone, it is good to see how everyone is progressing. Who was it who said we would have it cracked in 2 weeks then?

DS1 has been at nursery today and has only had 3 accidents whilst engrossed in play but otherwise has been asking to use the potty.

We haven't quite mastered the outdoor weeing yet, even though he has been practising a lot this week, almost everywhere (including my sister's garden) - he always gets his trousers and shoes wet as he finishes off!

I have been out and spent £10 of his birthday money on some more Disney Cars and the helicopter to encourage him to poo on the potty.

He was very keen to get his hands on the helicopter and got straight to work trying to produce something on the potty in order to get it . Unfortunately, his little poo wasn't enough; I have told him it has to be a 'proper' poo!

I have to venture into town tomorrow with the DC's to buy them shoes, I hope DS1 doesn't embarrass me too much with his alfresco weeing - I got tutted at the other day as I dashed him around the side of a shop so he could wee on the weeds there.

Hello everyone. Dd managed one poo en site and one off today, but still no wee accidents (= 3 days with no wee on anyone's floor - yay!)

LOL at all the al fresco weeing. Ds still adores 'weeing on trees'' 2 years after potty training!

Washersaurus · 31/07/2008 22:38

Wow fp - you are the potty training Master!

funnypeculiar · 31/07/2008 22:43

morning girls, I think its going to rain again.

FP you have the wees cracked! Well done you. Washersaurus, also venturing into town today, have a tonne of errands to run that I've been putting off!

Am probably going to jinx it all now, but really feel that we're in ok shape, promise of an ice cream tonight when Daddy gets home for no accidents today, fingers crossed eh.

simpson · 01/08/2008 22:57

Hope everyone had an ok day today with no accidents while out in town. No real change here DS fab with the wees and even comes in from garden where he is playing with kids outside saying he needs wee wee!! Amazing what differnce a smartie will make!! Just got to work on the poos, had another in pants today....

Washersaurus · 03/08/2008 00:01

Not posted much as progress has been slow. Today we have had a fair few tiny accidents (of the not got to the potty quick enough variety) and at last a poo in the potty!!!!

I hope he now has the confidence to use the potty again for poos, he seemed geniunely impressed "looks like sausages (snigger)". His one poo was actually more like three - heaven knows how long he had been holding it in for. DH nearly blocked the toilet trying to flush it

OP posts:
simpson · 03/08/2008 13:02

Still haven't cracked poos at all Still in pants and he still doesn't tell us when he has done one.

We had a wee accident yesterday too which was a bit of a shock but have been out shopping this morning and he held in wee till we got home and did an enormous wee!!

funnypeculiar · 03/08/2008 22:06

Hello all
Sounds like everyone is getting there slowly but surely. Dd is defn starting to 'get' poos now - I'd still say we're at about a 60% hit rate - the first one was defn the hardest .

No accidents AT ALL for the last 2 days. Including a daytrip to London & a party.

Weirdly, she's had a dry nappy in the morning the last 2 nights. A few more of those & I might have to go with nighttime training too - although that's going to be tough, as ds (4.5) is still in nighttime nappies, and sodden every morning, but is desperate to be out of them (esp since dd has been potty training...)

simpson · 03/08/2008 22:26

FunnyPeculiar - Am still awaiting first poo But I defo agree with you re nighttime nappies. DS still wees at night but they are MUCH lighter than they used to be so definately some control is going on.
