At a loss for what to do, co parent retracting consent for flu jabs for 3rd year in a row.

Hi, hope you can offer some advice. I have 2 DC (5 and 7) and co parent 50/50 with my ex. Medical appointments and the like are always left to me to sort and that’s always been the case. Today for the 3rd year in a row, my ex has called the kids primary school to refuse consent for the flu vaccine for both children. When the form came out in July to consent for the flu jab, I text ex (as I have done every year) and asked for a conversation about why I think they should have the vaccine. I was ignored and I never followed it up with him so I consented a few weeks later to them being vaccinated. I had a call from the school this morning (vaccination day) to say Dad has phoned last night and doesn’t want them vaccinated. What can I do. I am immunocompromised, I have an elderly parent with many health issues, this doesn’t just directly benefit my kids to have the vaccine but so much wider family too. I can take them to get it done through the GP but they will tell their dad and all hell will break loose.

This is part of post separation abuse and unfortunately there’s nothing you can do about it except take this to court on a specific issues application

BrendaHollowayWhenImGoneNsoul · 18/10/2026 05:32

Wonder if he's a conspiracy nut job.

It's possible your ex was a reasonable man who wasn't hell bent on abusing you after divorce, using the children as pawns.

People just don’t understand what it’s like.

it’s like parenting in a war zone

"Dear ex, as you did not wish to discuss the flu vaccine with me but have withheld your consent for school vaccines, the children have been vaccinated at the GP this year. More than happy to discuss vaccinations going forward, however, protecting them and others against communicable and preventable illnesses isn't negotiable. Best Regards."

No. He’s an abusive cunt

Very bad idea

Absolutely not, vaccines need consent from one parent and they've got it. The end.

roshi42 · 18/10/2026 07:00

If this is something you can take to court or officially get sorted I would because it sounds like it will be an issue later in their teens with HPG vaccine and BCG etc. If he’s an anti-vax nut you need to make sure he’s stopped from inflicting that on your children if you possibly can. Flu is one thing but other jabs to come are pretty vital.

Myfridgeiscool · 18/10/2026 07:03

What did you do for the previous 2 years?
I'd apply to court. His abusive behaviour is awful. Using the children as part of the abuse is unforgivable.

FairLemonNewt · 18/10/2026 07:06

Just take the to the GP for it and say they missed it at school. Don't tell them he hasn't consented. He's an idiot.

Specific order issue, apparently the courts usually grant it for routine NHS vaccines.

You can file the request etc by yourself you don’t need a solicitor.

Yes, do this - once it’s done it’s done for good and you won’t have to battle at every stage.

if you have DDs what happens when it comes to the HPV vaccine?

IamNatashaSparaks · 18/10/2026 07:19

If you’re immunocompromised your DC should not be having the live nasal spray.

Ask the GP for the injected vaccine.

Lizziewest88 · 18/10/2026 07:37

Get a solicitor and get a court order.

By the time it's due the children can overrule him if they want.

babyproblems · 18/10/2026 07:51

Agree take it court. It’s negligence imo.

I think you're underestimating what kind of person this man most likely is. It's often very difficult for teenage/young adults children to feel they can stand up against such a person and that's why an official court option is the most sensible in this situation.

Can you take them outside of school to get it done? I’ve done this a few times when the school’s day is really far into flu season.

If you're in England can I ask where you took them to get this done? Our school isn't doing them until mid December this year and I'd like to get them done sooner but the GP is only vaccinating the vulnerable kids, and I didn't think you could pay privately for the spray so I'm not sure where to go

FountainCourted · 18/10/2026 07:54

Those saying just go to the GP, I don’t think you can.

DS’s school delayed the flu vaccine by two months and as he’s in the at risk group, I tried to book it through his GP and pharmacies. No one would do it as the school is meant to do it. One said their contract with the NHS is only for preschoolers, so that might be why they all refused. Had to pay to do it privately.

If you are concerned about getting ill why don’t you have the flu jab?

They don't have to stand up to him. They tell the person administrating they want it. If the children are Gillick competent it's nothing to do with him. Equally if parents had consented at that age they can refuse.

ADHDDoomScroller · 18/10/2026 08:07

Have you tried telling him you are forbidding the children from getting any health care? Reverse uno card this idiot. And that if they get flu, due to your health needs, he will have to care for them while sick until they are better.

Bigballslittleball · 18/10/2026 08:09

I would be going back to court.
And in the meantime - book them in for the vaccination at the Drs

HammockFace · 18/10/2026 08:09

WasntSupposedToBeLikeThis · 15/10/2026 09:17

I think unfortunately in this instance there is nothing you can do if both parents have parental responsibility.
If there are conflicting consents they cannot be vaccinated.

I disagree with this. The negative does not hold sway legally.

The court will rule on this one.

Cantgetausername87 · 18/10/2026 08:09

Speak with your GP. The NHS is said it's heading for a terrible winter and will likely vaccinate. Failing that go to court and get an order - it's disgusting and placing your children in harms way - there's a vaccination programme for a reason x
